Ok, it's no secret that I did not like the author's first novel but Christina McDonald knocked it out of the park with Behind Every Lie! The opening was so mysterious and gripping and the tension was handled so, so well. I can't wait for her next book as Behind Every Lie was outstanding.

Eva Hansen wakes in the hospital, after being struck by lightning, to be told by police that her mother Kat was found murdered. Although Eva has no memory of the night's events, the police are suspicious of her because of certain evidence. Determined to find out what happened, Eva takes it upon herself to start an investigation. As she starts to unravel her mother's past, will Eva be putting herself in danger?

Behind Every Lie suffers from too many plot lines with too many twists. Had the story just been about her mother Kat and the past that has come back to haunt her, the story would have been much better. The dual timeline between Kat's present and past made sense, as the telling of the story was pieced together. Without spoiling the plot, especially the conclusion, all I can say is that certain elements seem to be there just to move the story along and are not realistically placed. The last few pages ruined the book for me and, for that reason, I would be hesitant to recommend Behind Every Lie to other readers.

Gallery Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Behind Every Lie. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.

Great read. I have read a lot of psychological thrillers so I sorta had an inkling of the story but there were a few surprises along the way. It will hold your interest as you read points of view from Eva and Kat and Kat's past. Jacket cover gives adequate description so so won't repeat. Read and enjoy.
I received this book as an ARC under no obligation to review. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Behind Every Lie by Christina McDonald.

The story begins with a woman staring down at her mother, who she is sure has just been murdered. But her memory is hazy and she has no idea what has happened. Did she do it? Did someone that she knows hurt her mom? But an explosion throws her even more off course.

Eva is an everyday woman with a loving husband and a complicated relationship with her mom. But she has no idea just how complicated. Forced to go down a rabbit hole after what Eva thought was a fairly normal life, she quickly learns just how wrong she's been. But who is to blame for everything that has happened? And is she one of them?

This was a perfect quarantine listen. I don't want to call this a "lazy read" because of what that might imply, but sometimes it's nice to put something in your ear that requires very little of you, while still keeping your brain occupied. This was that exact ticket. Good characters, easy to follow plot, boom, boredom busted.

Behind Every Lie by Christina McDonald is the second book I've read by this author and OMG her books are so well written! Eva the main character is struck by lightning and when she comes to she learns her mother has been murdered. She has her mother's blood on her hands but doesn't remember a thing. Did she do it, was it someone else? Behind Every Lie is full of twists and turns that you won't see coming. I've never been able to put down one of McDonald's books...in fact I read them both in one setting! If you are looking for an awesome thriller that will knock your socks off and keep you guessing then I recommend both of McDonald's novels!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an early ARC for my honest review.

Behind Every Lie is Christina McDonald’s second novel and it is just as well written, suspenseful, and addicting as her first (The Night Olivia Fell), This is a solid domestic suspense/thriller lover. I enjoyed reading the alternating points-of-view between mother and daughter and the "who done it" suspicions that arise throughout the book.

This was a “keep you up reading” mystery and that’s not just because its set in Seattle and Whidbey Island Washington where I live. It is important though to have an island with service by ferry to Seattle in the premise of this story. Told from the perspective of Eva in the present and her mother who narrates from the past, the two narrations come together in a chilling murder and stolen identity. I really liked the conclusion as Eve comes to terms with what has happened to her and looks forward to the future.

Eva Hansen wakes in the hospital after being struck by lightning and discovers her mother, Kat, has been murdered. Eva was found unconscious down the street. She can’t remember what happened but the police are highly suspicious of her. Determined to clear her name, Eva heads from Seattle to London—Kat’s former home—for answers. But as she unravels her mother’s carefully held secrets, Eva soon realizes that someone doesn’t want her to know the truth. And with violent memories beginning to emerge, Eva doesn’t know who to trust. Least of all herself. review: Behind Every Lie is told in alternating perspectives between Eva’s search for answers and Kat’s mysterious past. This book kept me on my toes guessing what actually happened that fateful night and the ending wrapped everything up nicely, although a bit predictably. I do think the characters lacked a bit of emotion, given everything that was happening to them, but otherwise it was an enjoyable book. If you’re looking for a twisty, suspenseful book pick up this one soon! rating: 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️

The Night Olivia Fell was one of the best books that I had read in awhile, so I was excited for the chance to read this book by the same author. I am pleased to say that this book is just as good as The Night Olivia Fell! I love how the author focuses on the complex relationship between mother and daughter and there were so many twists that I had to read this in one sitting!

I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I have to say that I was really excited to be approved for this ARC as I really enjoyed her other book. However, the going back and forth at the beginning was very confusing for me and I could not finish it.

Wow! I absolutely loved this book! McDonald's writing and storytelling is so compelling and creative it sucks you in and you just want more. This book is told in alternating points of view between Eva at present day and her mother Kat in the past. Their stories come together for an amazing conclusion to a crazy thriller. I highly recommend this read!!

After really loving The Night Olivia Fell, I am heartbroken to say that this one just didn't work for me. I wound up skimming it. That being said, I will happily read another one of Christina's books in the future. Thank you for the chance to be an early reader.

Very good book! Hard to put down once I started. I really enjoyed the mystery as well as the two different views. There were many twists and turns. I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

I absolutely LOVED The Night Olivia Fell, so when I heard Christina McDonald had a new book out, I just HAD to get my hands on it. Once again, McDonald has woven a thriller that I just couldn't put down. I loved the alternating perspectives between Eva and Kat. Best of all, McDonald gives us an unreliable narrator, which I love. I went back and forth between believing Eva and wondering just what the heck was going through her head. I think some of the best books cause you to question what you think you know over and over, and Behind Every Lie did just that! Go read it! It's available now, and you won't regret it. Thanks to @gallerybooks and @netgalley for my free copy in exchange for my honest review!

I’ve read both of Christina McDonald’s books so far and two things strike me.....
1.) I feel like she would be a better YA author and 2.) I don’t really classify her writing as mysterious (although this one was better than the last). For me, I don’t like the different POV’s but somehow most things I pick up these days tend to be written that way. Overall it is a good book and it will hold your attention.

I really enjoyed that this book was told through the viewpoint of both Kat and Eva. There were times when I was screaming at the characters thinking how could they not see the writing on the wall but it was a good, gripping read.

This has all the necessary ingredients of a current suspense thriller: unreliable narrator, mysterious murder, multiple timelines, and creepy or suspicious secondary characters to keep you guessing. The story was engaging and even though I “figured out” several twists early, i wanted to keep reading. I was not a fan of the ending. All plot lines were tied up neatly, but I was left unsatisfied.

Eva and Kat's stories blend perfectly in dual POVs during the reading of Behind Every Lie.

I am a Christina McDonald fan and no surprise, I definitely enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed the dual POVs, the mystery of what happened to Kat, and all the secrets Eva had no idea about. I was "that" reader - the one who was yelling at my Kindle, no - don't do it! Have you lost your mind?

So I'd say if you love mystery/thrillers, fast-paced thrill rides and/or secrets, this is the book for you.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for allowing an ARC at my request. This review and all thoughts are my own.

This was a quick read. There was a lot of everything thrown in here, which bogged it down a little. Lots of coincidences that were also a little too much. I did the like the story being told from Kat and Eva's points of view.

4.5⭐ Oh wow! The title made perfect sense to me at the end of this book. Behind Every Lie there's a reason and a story. So many twists and turns. I had figured a piece out partway through, but had the reason all wrong. I enjoyed the alternating narratives and the parallels between Eva and Kat's life make you think. I would recommend this book for sure! Thank you netgalley and Gallery Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
