I am a big fan of Prime Suspect and love the 'Tennison' series by Lynda La Plante so was looking forward to reading the Dolly Rawlins books. Maybe an error but I started with book 3 in the series 'She's out' which starts with Dolly Rawlins being released from prison after serving a lengthy sentence for the murder of her husband. She is now focused on collecting the six million in diamonds she stashed prior to her imprisonment.
Dolly is met by a welcome home committee of women who served time with her and also have plans on her diamonds.
This was a difficult one for me to review, I enjoyed much of the book and certainly enjoyed it but found the plot to difficult to believe. This is a rehash of an older novel and perhaps was a little dated.

I would like to thank both Net Galley and Zaffre for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is a vintage Lynda La Plante and hope there are more to follow. Just as with previous books by this author the characters are well crafted. It did not take long before the story had me hooked.
What a complex group of people, I was waiting to see who would mess up first and bring them all under attention by the police. Lynda was not kind with her handling of the police as they continually missed vital clues. I am not critical as this makes good reading. I will not leak any details, as it is best if the reader allows for the storyline to unfold as they read the book. Too many reviews tend to tell the plot in a couple of paragraphs.
Keep going Lynda as I am sure you have many untold stories in reserve.

The final novel of the Widows trilogy
It feels filmic as it would as it follows the tv series
My least favourite of the three but but enjoyable enough

This book was not for me. I had trouble getting into it and didn’t finish it. I couldn’t connect with the characters. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Quite a good read, it does get a bit 'waffley' and I was disappointed in the ending until I realised there is another book coming.

Slow start but picked up pace . Overall a good book. The ending was a bit unexpected. What happens to the characters has to be seen in the next book.

If it sometimes feels like a television movie, that's because La Plante originally wrote the Widows trilogy as a British television series. Widows was a six episode mini-series in the mid 1980's with the novel coming out about the same time. Widows 2 soon joined the success of Widows with another six episodes of a mini-series. As the titles indicate, this series featured the world's most dangerous femme fatale and her team of widows out to finish the capers their husbands started. A decade later, She's Out came out, a new six episode mini-series with a novelization to boot. The Widows franchise also resulted in a star-studded Hollywood movie in 2018.

Now, La Plante has reworked all three novels and they are being re-released to a new Audience. She's Out is a fast moving story that follows Dolly Rawlings years later after she's released from prison and gathers a new gang of tough women criminals. At times, it's a bit of a comic caper and, at times, it's a bit of a soap opera. But, it's a fun fast read. Looking forward to the first two in the series.

Dolly is a tough nut, top dog in the prison, not because of what she's done - but what she hasn't done. The prisoners and the guards respect her, and she's done a lot to improve conditions, lobbying for a children's wing for the younger women. But now she's being released and with rumors swirling about her involvement in a diamond heist, plans are being made, and not just by Dolly.

This is the first novel I have read by Lynda La Plante and I found the jumping back and forth a bit confusing at times. I am used to books that stay with one point of view and don't jump from one character to another.

I found the characters to be well written, not necessarily likable (considering that they were mostly all criminals or police officers). But the relationships between the women, even though they were trying to do Dolly dirty, were interesting. The women behaved, not as a free woman would, but like they were still in prison and jockeying for the dominant position - trying to stab one another (figuratively) in the back at the same time.

I had to force myself through a few chapters and never really got hooked, I couldn't help comparing She's Out to another well-known crime writer's work and found it somehow lacking. But, having never read anything by La Plante before I can't compare it to her other books to say whether it was extraordinary or just ordinary by her standards. I'm sure fans of her work will love it, but . . . I found it okay.

I think the biggest problem I had with this novel is that it’s not a stand-alone and shouldn’t be read without knowing the prior story.

I love LaPlante’s books, but I will try to read this again after reading the earlier book.

She’s Out is the last book in The Widows trilogy, after serving her time for killing her husband Dolly, now released is determined to find the diamonds and realise her dream of opening a children’s home. So starts this story with a host of twists, turns and strong characters.
Although entertaining I wasn’t as engrossed as with the previous books, for me there was something lacking and not sure about that ending.
That said an enjoyable enough read.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.

Dolly Rawkins shot and killed her scheming lying cheating husband. She served eight years. She's out now and she's going after the diamonds age his away from a robbery. After jumping through hoops to get the diamonds, she finds they'd been stolen and replaced with fakes.
Her dream had been to open a home for displaced children. Now all the money is gone. She has only the run down manor she'd bought from a recently paroled female inmate. In fact her manor is full of inmates, all women, all had been in trouble, all scheming to have a part of the diamonds. But they can't let Dorothy know that.
One incident after another and they finally come up with a Rick solid plan to have millions. All they have to do is trust each other.
Great plot twists.
