The family legacy of helping each other through danger and difficult relationships continues much to my book-loving joy in this fourth of the series. I was expecting someone else to get their story, but was gladly mistaken when I realized it was the stalwart family friend, Sheriff Danny Oldman.
Review

A Cowboy Like You is the fourth of the Heart of Texas series and is a series of connected standalone stories.

Danny has watched his friends find love and is truly happy for them, but that blessing hasn’t seem to come his way. He has his work as county sheriff which he loves because he loves helping and protecting people, but it doesn’t do a thing for the loneliness when he’s off duty.
Then, one night while eating his take-out dinner at a quiet highway rest strop, he is on hand to prevent an assault. The victim turns out to be his former high school crush, Skylar Long, who admits that she’s running away from an abuse situation.
Doing his duty, Danny takes care of the angry jerk who would have killed her most likely and gets Skylar into a safe place with Clayton and Abby out at the East Ranch. Then he learns the identity of Skylar’s abusive ex boyfriend. Danny knows he’s going to need more than the law on his side. calls on his friendship with Clay, the Harpers, and their former military buds, Cooper and Jace because they’re now up against big money who will do whatever it takes to protect one of their own.

Skylar doesn’t know how she became the abuse survivor of a man who lied to her all along. She wants to wallow and give in to fear especially since Matt and his family’s tactics to get her to give up her case get vicious. But, Danny is there to hold the fear at bay and she’s made some strong supportive friends of her own now while staying out at the ranch as the East-Harper clan readies for the Christmas season. She always thought this small town was not for her and she was a big city girl, but the big city pales after her time with Danny and seeing the loyalty and love these people here have shown during her crisis. Dare she hope that Danny is starting to want her as much as she wants him?

Abusive situations are always heartbreaking, but I do love cheering on the survivors who can get away and reboot. Skylar had been in the sadistic hands of a pro who lied, gaslighted, made promises, but ultimately needed to control her and her life inflicting pain. Later in the book, his motives are there between being the loser in his own family, but also just being an angry narcissistic fiend who had the money and enablement to do his thing. I was definitely cheering on Danny and the guys to stop him and see Skylar fully get her own back.

The romance moves swiftly and is mixed in with the suspense plot so that both move along together which is how I most like it to go when I read romantic suspenses instead of seeing the focus swap back and forth. Both were good people, mature, and knew what they wanted even if they hesitated because they had ideas of what was best for the other person. Danny was the true blue treasure and Skylar recognized this when she saw him in the context of his job and place in the county though Danny was too humble to realize how integral he was to so many people. I loved seeing him find his way to his own happiness. I could have wished for a tad more relationship development particularly in regard to their future plans, but I was still satisfied with what I got.

The big climax scene was intense and pulse-pounding. I’ve come to anticipate this moment in the series books and it didn’t disappoint. Now, I’m left eager for more from this Heart of Texas series and not even caring which person gets their story next. Those who love their cowboys and small town life mixed in with some good suspense should definitely give this series a go.

This book had a little bit of everything. It was a sweet, small-town, second chance romance but there was also an element of drama & suspense that made it hard to put the book down. Even though it was a bit predictable, I found myself devouring the book until I could see the bad guy get his just desserts and Danny & Skylar get their happy ever after.

This is absolutely a book, and series worth picking up!!

A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is an amazing romantic suspense tale built around the "me too" movement.
The story opens with Sheriff Danny Grant coming off duty, going home and deciding what he wants to eat and where to go to eat it. Picking up food and going to a rest stop on the road, Danny becomes involved with a young woman being abused by her 'boyfriend' whom she has left and was trying to get away from him. As it turns out Danny knows the woman, Skylar, following proper procedure he goes to help her and arrests the boyfriend. This action opens up a whole batch of trouble as the boyfriend, Matt, is rich, well known and spoiled. The story continues in this manner as Matt goes to jail, vows to get even with everyone involved and leaves a trail of vengeance and destruction to everyone who gets in his way. A beautiful, soft romance evolves as Danny and Skylar, who have know each other since high school, begin to realize that they were meant to be together. Matt's vengeance begins to show after he is slapped with a restraining order to stay away from Skylar. First Matt must find where Skylar is as she is being helped by friends of Danny at their exclusive, well protected ranch. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. I could hardly put id down as it gets really thrilling as the story unfolds. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Sheriff Danny Oldman is at loose ends lately. He can't forget the woman he had a crush on in high school. Skylar Long has been trying to get away from her abusive live in boyfriend. She left town after high school to be successful in the big city. Fleeing toward home brings Skylar and Danny back into contact. Will they survive the danger that follows her? Will she fall for A Cowboy Like You?

Danny Oldman became sheriff sooner than he expected. He's feeling restless and wants to be left alone but yet he's lonely. Long hours working as sheriff doesn't give him much time for a relationship. When he goes to one of his favorite places at a scenic rest stop to eat, Danny finds that he can't get away from the job. An expensive car pulls in but no one gets out. Another car pulls in and he immediately knows there is trouble coming. His job has him reading the signs of a domestic abuse situation. Skylar Long realized too late that her current boyfriend was abusive, not until she moved in with him. She's tried to get away from him a couple of times with no luck. Skylar pulled into the rest area to see if the car following her is her boyfriend. He comes up to her car and starts beating on it and tries to drag her through the broken window. About that time Danny decides it's time to intervene. He calls for back up and arrests the boyfriend. It's not until he gets a good look at the woman that he realizes, its Skylar. She's the woman he couldn't forget. Skylar is upset and shaken by all that has gone on but remembers Danny from high school. He offers to take her to his friends on a local ranch so she can be safe. Danny decides he doesn't want to loose Skylar again. She's grateful to his friends for taking her in and helping out, but wants to stay with them for a short amount of time. The boyfriend tries throwing his influence around because in the Houston area his family has major influence. When his or his family's influence doesn't get the results they expect. They start a smear campaign against Skylar. The boyfriend makes everyone think he's gone back to Houston and work. Only Danny isn't completely convinced. He and his friends try to find proof that the boyfriend has done this before. Skylar realizes how much she's missed living in her home town and begins to think about moving back. The house she's always loved in town is on the market and she buys it. Danny and Skylar have started to fall in love with each other and relax their vigilance only to have a hired goon come and threaten her. The boyfriend has hired a hacker and mercenaries to help him pull off his revenge against Danny and Skylar. They kidnap Danny and begin beating him and eventually going to kill him. Information comes to light about the boyfriend's past. Skylar and her new friends come up with a plan to find out where Danny is being
held. He rescues himself by killing the mercenaries and wants to get to Skylar before something happens to her. Skylar puts her plan into motion and is kidnapped from a local liquor store and taken to the ex-boyfriend. All the while she's being tracked by their friends. Danny in extreme pain won't go to the hospital until he gets Skylar back from the ex-boyfriend. A showdown at the local airport has Danny making a decision that injures Skylar. Skylar and Danny spend time together at the hospital. They move on with their lives. Skylar's come up with a new career. Danny asks her to marry him and is accepted. He realized that she was what has been missing in his life all along.

Donna Grant continues her Heart of Texas series with A Cowboy Like You. A story full of danger and obsession. It brings the plight of abusive relationships to the for front. A man at loose ends must figure out how to protect the woman he's loved since high school. A woman finds help and love midst danger and fear of trying to leave an abusive relationship. They must work together to save each other from the evil that stalks her. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I've been waiting on Danny's book. And wow. It was well worth the wait! I knew Danny would have a slightly different story than the others, but this story was perfect for him based on how he's been in the previous three books. I like Skylar's feisty nature and felt like she was a great fit for the other women in this series - all strong and willing to do what was needed to stand up individually and be supportive of the rest of the group. I do not want this series to end; I could easily read books with these characters for years. They feel like old friends, and I love how the world has been built out by Grant. I strongly recommend this book and the entire series!

I quite like this series, and I was super happy to get Danny's story I didn't expect it was going to be Danny's story but I was glad it was. Danny is the town sheriff and always looking out for everyone, but himself. When he was in school he had a crush on his classmate Skylar. She was made for many things and didn't want to stay in their small town. The moment she graduated she was out of there.

Fate and bad choices had Skylar and Danny in the right place at the right time. Skylar was trying get away from an abusive boyfriend and lands in the arms of Danny. With Skylar's ex comes his pretentious family causing her more stress. Danny involves Clayton, Brice and Caleb as well as Abby, Audrey and Naomi to help with Skylar and the case.

I'm glad to see the others from the first three books. There all super loyal, loving and open minded. As per usual Donna Grant has a knack for writing great suspense. I was kept on my toes the whole time. My only real complaint was even though both Danny and Skylar's had crushes on each other from high school I thought the rate of evolution of their relationship was too fast for me to fully believe the connection and strength of their bond.

I had originally thought this story would have been either Jace or Cooper's story. And now after this story we got to know a new character named Ryan and I hope there is a story for him coming as well. Fingers crossed we may get 3 more stories in this series.

Good suspense. Good drama. Even though too fast still a good relationship.

3.5 Stars!

Another great book by Donna Grant. If you have read any of her Heart of Texas books this one brings you back to a familiar place with some familiar faces.
The story follows local Sheriff Danny Oldman and Skylar Long. He had a crush on Skylar in high school, but never persued her. She left and now years later, he finds himself rescuing her from an abusive boyfriend.
I love Danny, he quickly became one of my favorites. A real stand up guy, always looking out for others. I was very excited to see him get his own story, having met h in previous books.
This book has a sweet love story and some good suspense to keep you on your toes. Also revisiting characters from previous books is always enjoyable. You can read this as a stand alone and I highly recommend.

If you have been reading my blog for a while I have been reading and reviewing quite a bit of Donna Grant's books.

A Cowboy Like You is book 4 in the Heart of Texas series and it can be read as a stand-alone but I do recommend you start from the beginning because you get to know more about some of the secondary characters from this book.

I was so hooked into this story that I just couldn't put it down. This book has suspense and romance. I just loved the chemistry between Danny and Skylar. I loved seeing some of the characters from previous books as well.

I hear there will be the 5th book in this series and I can't wait to read it.

I do highly recommend this.

I am giving this 5 out of 5 stars.

Skylar is on the run from her ex boyfriend who started abusing her. She is pulled into a rest stop when her ex finds her there. Danny is the sheriff of their small town and was eating supper in his truck. He rescues Skylar from her ex and Danny can’t believe it’s the girl he had a crush on in high school. Danny takes her to some of his friends ranch to hide out from her ex. But Skylar’s ex figures if he can’t have her, no one can.
This story was a whole lot better than I thought it would be. Danny is strong and protective and Skylar is smart and beautiful. A little suspense and some loving.

At the beginning of the book, I found there was too much description and back story and not enough action. In other words – too much tell and not enough show. I also got kind of annoyed at how often fate or how this was how things were meant to be in regards to the romance between the two main characters. I felt that it took a little bit away from the romance and that it seemed too simple. The one character just got out of an abusive relationship and wasn’t really completely out of it when she started the new one. The book also kept referencing that they had gone to high school together but in the twenty or so years since they would have changed, yet it kept being referenced like that was a good enough reason for their relationship to get so serious so soon. To me the believability of the romance was off and didn't allow me to get into the story as much as I would have liked.

A fantastic read that was fast-paced, well written with well developed characters, danger, loyalty, heart-stopping suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat and had me totally immersed in all that was happening and didn't want it to end when I got to the last page. I loved the attraction, sizzling chemistry and steamy romance between handsome Sheriff Danny Oldman and Skylar Long who returns to her hometown while trying to escape her abusive and obsessive boyfriend. Ms. Grant blew me away with "A Cowboy Like You" and I look forward to more from this gifted author. I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is book four in her Heart of Texas series. Every book is about another couple and can easily be read as stand-alone. For best reading experience I recommend to read the books in order. The previous books are The Christmas Cowboy Hero; Cowboy Cross My Heart and My Favorite Cowboy.
A Cowboy Like You is Danny and Skylar's story.
Danny is the town's sheriff and when he finds a damsel in distress, all his instincts want to help.
Skylar Long is back in town, she's hiding from her ex.
A Cowboy Like You is a beautifully thought out, beautifully written and beautifully told story with just the right amount of danger and drama. I loved the writing, the characters and the storyline. 4,5 Stars.

A COWBOY LIKE YOU is the fourth instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult HEART OF TEXAS romantics suspense series . This is Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman, and Skylar Long’s story line. A COWBOY LIKE YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Danny and Skylar A COWBOY LIKE YOU follows the building relationship between Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman, and Skylar Long. The premise is exciting and engaging; the characters are energetic and colorful; the romance is seductive and sexy. A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a wonderfully spirited addition to the author’s Heart of Texas series.

Skylar Long and Danny Oldman have a history. Years ago, despite their mutual crushes on each other, Skylar left town, leaving him devastated. Since then, Danny has had no one. He likes to tell those who ask that he is married to his job, sheriff of the small town. In reality, Danny never got over Skylar. Now, Skylar has returned home, fleeing her abusive boyfriend. While at a rest stop, Skylar is about to get killed, but Danny, the sheriff, rides in to rescue her, and cannot believe his old crush is back again. Now we find that the ex-boyfriend is well connected and has money, so things get dicey. Both Danny and Skylar work to get Skylar out of this situation while getting their lives back together. The question is whether these two can make it all happen again.

This is a sweet romance, with a bit more than romance in it. The romance is inevitable, but there are obstacles to overcome. It was interesting to watch how the two managed to overcome them as well as to watch them revive what they once had. Drama is obviously involved in this endeavor. Nevertheless, all is well that ends well, and this is a large theme for the book. I think this is a great holiday story of second chances at romance. The characters were well done and suited to the story. It was obvious from the outset how it would end, but it was fascinating to watch it play out. I think most romance readers will love this one, especially during this holiday season. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.

I've read a lot of this author's works, and they've all been enjoyable reads, and this one was no exception! I was very pleased to see who this book featured for a main Hero!

Danny has always intrigued me since I read the first book. I'd always been hoping to have him have his own story, but when we got right down to it, he fell short. His loner nature wasn't fully explained by the "pining for my high school crush" trope used to explain it, especially since he seemed to be a take charge kinda guy.

I really liked Skylar! I was able to easily identify with her, and I liked her willingness to stand up to her ex. I had a difficult time believing that she was that in love with Danny that she'd jump into a relationship with him so soon after her "break up" with Matt. I would have liked to see her take a bit of a breath and mourn the loss of that relationship before taking up with Danny.

The book is fast paced and engaging, with a subtle suspense plot that threw in a few twists for me. All things considered, a very enjoyable read!

OMG! What a freaking awesome book!
This is the story of Danny, the sheriff in a small Texas town, and a woman who is being assaulted at a rest area. After arresting the man, Danny turns his attention to the woman he saves. It is then he realizes that the woman is someone he knew in high school. As it turns out, Skylar was trying to leave an abusive boyfriend, but her previous attempts failed. This time, however, she is successful due to Danny's intervention.
The boyfriend is the son of one of the wealthiest families in Texas.
This novel spotlights the difficulty that actual women face everyday when they try to get out of an abusive relationship. The "he said/she said" is only the tip of the iceberg. The author has done amazing research in recreating the many difficulties that abused women face. While Skylar and Danny find their HEA ending, many women do not. Although spotlighting the problems women encounter while in a toxic relationship, this story is so much more. Kidnappings and attempted murder bring this story to a nail-biting climax. Excellent storytelling and a fabulous plot give this book 5 stars!

This is really 3.5 stars for me. My first book by this author, I wasn't sure what to expect going in other than the small town feel with cowboy alphas. I did like the story but not specifically for the main romance, which wasn't as engaging as I would have liked despite my liking both the hero and heroine.

When the story begins, Danny is a man going through the motions of living. He's got a family of friends but is still mostly a loner. Having dinner at a rest stop one night, he sees a troubling situation of a woman being menaced by a man. As local sheriff, he intervenes in saving the woman being assaulted and has the abusive man hauled off. Upon securing the situation, he realizes that the woman that he saved is the woman he once crushed on above all others, Skylar. Danny and Skylar were friendly in high school but hadn't seen each other in many years. Once they lay eyes on each other again, Danny feels that overpowering yearning towards her return and Sklyar finally feels safe. Turns out that Skylar was fleeing an abusive boyfriend who had been terrorizing her for months. An abusive boyfriend who refuses to allow her to leave him, no matter what.

The suspense of Skylar's dilemma is intriguing though not exactly innovative. She's a woman who is strong yet found herself in a terrible situation that wasn't easy for her to extricate herself from. Despite being financially self-sufficient and intelligent, Skylar has no idea the lengths of what Matt will do in his misguided belief that she is his property. Danny is a protector by nature, so add in his natural demeanor with his longing for Skylar and you have man who will do whatever he can to save Skylar from a monster.

Now, I believe the hero and heroine have chemistry but my lone issue is I thought their romance was a bit underdeveloped. There's a lot of suspense that doesn't allow for many down moments for their romance to organically flourish so I felt that it relied on readers accepting Danny and Skylar having crushed on each other hard in high school despite not acting on it as the foundation, which might have worked better if they had seen each other in the years since to build on that. It's a minor quibble that doesn't negate from the overall story and that is "A Cowboy Like You" is an entertaining romantic suspense novel.

I would read other books by the author, especially featuring any of the side characters introduced [to me] in this story. I really liked all of the supporting protagonists in Danny and Skylar's romance.
