I read The Widows and when I saw Ms. La Plante was coming out with a new book, I knew I wanted to read it.

This story pulls characters and peripheral storylines from The Widows. While it is a different story, readers (like myself) will appreciate the linkages made between The Widows series and this new one – The Jack Warr Series.

While I was not on the edge of my seat, I was completely engrossed in the story. The mere mention of Dolly and Harry Rawlins piqued my interest and continuously tugged at the corner of my mind.

The dialogues was crisp and supported effortless reading.

In typical La Plante fashion, this series debut has an ample splattering of vicious criminals, devious women, strung together with brilliant detective work.

“Plot twist” does not give this story justice. At every page turn, a new element was added to storyline, only to be cleverly resolved in the end.

The ending, like a door left ajar, left me yearning to know more about Jack Warr and he would do with the information he found.

Highly recommended to fans of crime mysteries.

I loved the Widow series with Dolly Rawlings and was anxious to follow the “ legacy”. This book introduces Jack Warr who is working on the case of a charred body with burnt money surrounding it. The money might be from The Dolly Rawlins and her gang’s heist. Even better, Jack might be the biological son of Harry Rawlins, theif extraordinaire! There are some slow parts with many characters to keep track of and flashbacks are used throughout. It takes a bit for the story to take off I received a free copy of this book and am willingly leaving my review.

I have reviewed this book earlier but here it sits saying it still needs to be reviewed.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy--twice! Lynda La Plante came to my attention as the creator of the series Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren. I was mesmerised by the stories and the writing. I then learned she had created the series Widows which was turned into a movie in 2018. This book, Buried, follows that series. It is life after prison and the devious wiles of women searching for what is believed to be a lot of money. I found the book more a script than literature. It was as if she was already writing the sequel to Widows. It was a bit off-putting but the the narrative was fun, sped along at a great clip and had a satisfying ending.

Buried is the first in a new series with characters that are based in England which for some readers when it comes police procedural books they have to remember that in police do things differently.

It took some time to getting used to the author writing style as well as well as the list of characters that seem to come out of the wood work.

The story is interesting enough to finish but not quite sure it is the best beginning to a new series.

At times readers will be a little lost in the terminology and reason for why the characters do what they do.

Thank you to Netgalley for the advance copy of Lynda La Plante Buried

Many thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this novel.

I found this a fast but confusing read, maybe because I hadn't read any of the Widows book before. The plot was muddy, unclear, with flashbacks thrown in haphazardly. Lots of characters and common sounding names so I was searching back in the story for who they were. I didn't find the story grabbed me, I was just happy to get it read! Maybe the final version will be easier to understand with some editing. I feel I don't need to read thw Widows books now, as this one covered the past.

Having read the entire TENNISON and WIDOWS series late last year, I was eager to dive into Lynda La Plante's new series, featuring D.C. Jack Warr. In the TENNISON series, La Plante revisited one of her iconic characters from the PRIME SUSPECT series. Now, in BURIED, she revisits the classic characters from her WIDOWS TV/book series. While this is a completely separate story with a new protagonist, it does help to have read the WIDOWS series, as there are many references to the escapades from that original trilogy.

Jack Warr and his partner Maggie have recently moved to London. Soon he is investigating a burned cottage, which leads him on a path that circles back to his own origins. Meanwhile, Jack is dealing with her the imminent death of his stepfather, Charlie. There's a lot going on in his investigation, so it's important to pay attention. The narrative includes some time lapses, which is where it will be helpful if you're familiar with the WIDOWS storyline.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next installment. I just hope La Plante eventually returns to the Anna Travis character, the heroine of my favorite La Plante series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.

I did not enjoy this story as much as the series with Anna Travis or Jane Tennison. The story seemed to drag a bit and I could not connect with characters. I loved all the books by this author and would still read the next one in this new series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A burned body at an abandoned cottage with money burned in the fireplace. No serial numbers left on the bills to identify them. Could they be the money from a robbery in 1995? There were a lot of characters to keep straight in this book. I had a hard time getting into this book. I found myself skimming sections. Not my cup of tea. That is why I give it 2 1/2 stars rounded up to 3.

I liked the Prime Suspect series and even the TV show, so when I saw Buried, I was thrilled. Yawn, ho-hum...tedious. As a reader, if you do not care one bit about the characters nor any of the tiresome back and forth between the various threads of the storyline, and are willing to close up the book even at 2/3 way through, it is not recommendation worthy. I was very disappointed but maybe like many authors who have written many books, they are out of good ideas and just because the publishers want more? Well, tell 'em No.

Lynda La Plante seems to have a head full of interesting plots and characters, and she writes them all down in her very own style. I don’t think there are any thriller- or mystery-lovers out there who have never heard of her, seen one of her movies or series or read one of her books.
This new series promises to reach her old fans and make new ones, because there are – as usual – lots of things going on. Although as other reviewers here, I was not a very big fan of the main character Jack but what can I say? After only one book… It was fun to see how the author sort of went back to her first success from 1983, the Widows-series that dealt with a gang of female armed robbers.

Thanks to Netgally and Bonnier Zaffre books for this digital review copy.

This is the first book in the new DC Jack Warr series by author Lynda La Plante.
Based in London and featuring the new lead character Jack Warr the book however follows on from the Dolly Rawlins books where she and her gang of widows stole millions from a huge heist.

The book takes up when a charred body is found following a fire at a derelict cottage. Along with the body, millions of stolen bank notes are discovered in the burnt remains. The money is from the Dolly Rawlins heist from some 20 years earlier.

DC Jack Warr and his girlfriend Maggie have just moved to London to start a new life together. Jack begins investigating the case and decides to rattle some cages to try to uncover the truth behind both the body and the money. As if this case isn't enough for him, Jack is having to cope with his dying adopted father and trying to discover who is his real father.

I enjoyed the book the more I read although I didn't instantly take to either Jack or the other characters. I do enjoy the writing of this author and love the Tennison series so will definitely read more.

I would like to thank both Net Galley and Zaffre for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Once I got past some of the British colloquialisms and matched the author's pace, this was an intriguing and compelling fast-paced read. Excellent plot line and while I loved the lead, Jack, and his most of the supporting characters, the antagonists were so well-developed that I was cheering for them as well in a slightly twisted sense of fair play. A great piece of crime drama.

This is the first book in a brand new series by Lynda La Planted. I could not put this novel down until the end. Twist and turns right until the end! I will be reading more of her books.
You won't regret picking this book up to read.
The characters in this book were wonderful. Jack and his girlfriend, Maggie move to England from Devon to for Maggie's career at the hospital. Jack's a new detective under DCI Ridley. A body is found in a burning cottage with almost 2 million old banknotes partially burned in the fireplace. They suspect the money could have come from a mail train robbery years ago.
Will Jack prove to Ridley he's a capable detective and will stop at nothing to find out who died at the burned cottage and who the robbers were all those years ago?

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the eARC

This is the second book I have read from this author and I am enthralled with her writing. This book was just as good as the first. In this book, Jack has moved to London with his girlfriend Maggie and is a new detective to the force. His higher up wants to promote him, but only if he can show enthusiasm and show that he wants to advance after his many years as a detective. At the same time, his adopted father finds out he is dying and he is given information about who his parents are. The case that he is working has started to blend with the information that he was given by his dad and it all ties into the train robbery from the last book of the widows series. I can really tell that I am going to love this new series and cannot wait to see Jack develop and grow into the man and detective he wants to be. Thanks for the ARC, Net Galley.

DC Jack Warr has recently moved to London from Devon to help his partner further her medical career, he is currently working for the Met under DCI Ridley
Jack is waiting for a case to excite him. He feels like he is just marking time and Ridley seems to know that. When a body found in a burned out cottage with almost 2 million in old banknotes in the fireplace partially burned Jack thinks this could be the case to re-ignite the spark within him. The police suspect money could have come from a mail train robbery from years ago. No one was charged and the stolen millions never found.
They need to identify the body as well as where money came from, if they can find that out they could potentially solve two crimes.
Jack’s focus is not entirely on the case. The man he has always called Dad, who adopted Jack when he was very young, is dying and Jack is wondering if he should start trying to find out who his biological father is. But when the truth is revealed will Jack live to regret it?

I just loved the new DC and his girlfriend. It made for an interesting difference to the normal Jane Tennison we've become use to. Jack is a very laid back copper, not really full of ambition and then he gets involved in an investigation that turns everything, including him, upside down. I really enjoyed the book and can't wait to read some more by ms La Plante! Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't particularly find of the main characters, but I certainly enjoyed the women Jack was investigating. There are plenty of twists and turns in this book and it will keep you guessing.

Thank you NetGalley and Bonnier Jaffre UK for the eARC.
This is an enjoyable read with, oddly enough, characters I didn't like that much. Except for Angela and Connie, the others, even the two main characters Jack and Maggie, didn't do much for me. But I found the premise of a bunch of female cons outsmarting everyone a lot of fun.
The book starts with a meeting of said cons to the fire in a cottage with a body in it.
Jack and Maggie have moved to London where Jack works for the police, part of the case investigating the deadly fire. His adopted father is dying, but the investigation into who his real father is, gets him into trouble with both his boss and Maggie. Maggie worries about his state of mind as he's obsessed with this private investigation, endangering his job. His instincts as a cop kick in as he works both the private and police cases, finally filling the hole he's always tried to fill in his psyche.
It was a fast moving story with some colorful female characters...for me they were the best part of the book. Recommended.
