there is something so “heathcliff it’s me cathy i’ve come home and i’m so cold” about each and every one of these characters. shadowhunters are angel/demon books sure fine but they’re also about human connection and this incessant desire to be loved and cared for. cordelia you a superstar

After many years of waiting, few words could describe the excitement I felt as I finally held this book in my hands. The cover and its colour scheme are gorgeous, hinting at the content it contained and promising great things.

Well, lovely readers, I’m here today to tell you that this book did not disappoint.

It’s impossible to resist the charm of the London Institue shadowhunters, especially when they have familiar last names like Herondale and Carstairs. The new generation of shadowhunters was a pleasure to meet and I was happy to see that the bond between the Herondales and Carstairs remained as strong as ever.

The relationship between James and Cordelia intrigued me the most. As always, Cassandra Clare succeeds in writing an angst-filled romance that has me tearing through the novel to find out if they ever end up together. And, as always, the ending is never the one we expect. If I pick up the next book, it will mostly be to find out if James and Cordelia have a happy ending or not.

Reading about married Tessa and Will was like coming home after years away and finding your family eagerly awaiting your arrival. There is something special about picking up a book and reacquainting yourself with your old favorite characters. Even the familiar surnames were enough to get me excited.

The story throughout the book was slightly disappointing but rapidly picked up near the end. It left me with more questions asked than answered and made me realize that this first book was probably just a set-up for the next book

It was so good it's hard to even find something to say about it. I've read TMI and TID by Cassandra Clare and after TID, I was unsure any of her other series could come close but my socks were knocked off with Chain of Gold. The characters, action, the threat/evil, the love, the story as a whole!!! AHHH I couldn't read it fast enough. The most recent series I've read is TID so it was so cool to see....SPOILER (Tessa and Will's children)

A great book as usual from Ms. Clare! The writing, the story telling, the wits and banter of this book were awesome! Entertaining as always!

This is just an excerpt, but it is amazing! Clare’s characters are always amazing, and this is no different. I can’t wait to read the full story!

This book was phenomenal. I'm absolutely in love with this new cast of characters and can't wait to read more about them. It's also really amazing seeing how these early events tie back to the story that happens later on. Cassandra Clare had done it again and I'm here for it.

Another book that does not let down or disappoint! I have been a fan of Cassandra Clare for years and have LOVED all of her shadowhunter books. This one has been no different. I bought this one immediately after reading this excerpt and am so glad that I did. More more more please!!

This was my first Cassandra Clare read and while I hadn't read the previous instalments in this world, I still enjoyed this. The cover is incredible!

This was my first taste of a Cassandra Clare book and it had me intrigued. Will certainly be purchasing the book and reading others she has written.

DNF this book. I requested this book before knowing about some of the hateful comments this author has posted on Twitter. I am unwilling to review a book when I have witnessed an author verbally attack, tag, and call out a negative review by a reader. I appreciate the offer by the publisher, however I cannot support an author that creates an unsafe virtual space for her readers.

I'm not the biggest fan of Cassie Clare but, I was super excited to get started in this series. I'm happy to see where the story is going and can't wait for the next book to come out.

I requested this excerpt knowing it would be amazing! The full book ended up being one of my favourite books of 2020. Cassandra Clare never disappoints me. This excerpt perfectly sets the tone for the book, it left me wanting to read the book more than I wanted before, if that’s possible! Can’t wait for the next books!

When I first heard about Chain of Gold, I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Yet another Shadowhunter series? I enjoyed the drama and intrigue of the Infernal Devices trilogy but had yet to dive into anything else -- the timelines and family trees are just confusing to me. But when I discovered that this series would followed the Infernal Devices' Will, Jem, and Tessa into adulthood, I picked it up and finished it in what felt like three seconds. Then I went on to read the entire book, and then all the preview short stories on the author's blog. That's the addictive nature of Cassandra Clare and her Shadowhunter world -- it starts with initial skepticism and tentative delving, then leads to full on indulgence. Edifying? Not exactly. Fun? Yes!

The battle against the demonic realm and the secret links between hellions and the Nephilim continue with Chain of Gold, which tells the story of the children of Will, Tessa, and their friends from Infernal Devices. It's atmospheric, addictive, and melodramatic. The start of the book introduces ghostly and otherworldly aspects to offset and shake up the stuffy London institute's established ways. Although there were too many characters to keep track of, and many of them seemed too good looking for their own good (or to be believable), the tangled threads of story caught me up and kept me going.

What I enjoyed most were the dreamy Edwardian worldbuilding, the exploration of James (and Lucie) Herondale's bloodlines (a perpetual "where is the answer??" throughout), and the exploration of outsider-insider dynamics. What didn't quite work for me were the multiple romances, whether clearly-sinister-yet-strangely-accepted or not. They were sometimes sweet and ardent in a way that my teenaged self could connect with, yet sometimes unbelievably fiery in a way that was totally out of character (and not altogether fitting for younger readers, in my matronly opinion). I also wanted to like Cordelia more as a main(ish) character -- if she is truly an independent and strong heroine, make her so without her breast a-fluttering every moment after a guy! I also really wanted more of Lucie's perspective, especially after the opening flashback. She could have been so much more than a romance story-writing sidekick. The way things came together throughout, especially at the end, was also forced and a little too over the top for me -- but I had to remind myself that this was a Shadowhunter novel. It's bound to be rather ridiculous.

So, with a little reluctance, yet with much semi-concealed enthusiasm, I will continue to indulge and look forward to the next book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the initial preview of this book. That first taste worked!
