This was such a good excerpt. I cannot wait to read the rest of the book and find out what happens to Bryce and I’m ready to meet hunt!

With House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J. Maas seems to have taken a different route than her previous book, a much welcome change.

Crescent City is not a court nor a glass castle. It's a city, filled with shifters, faes, angels, humans and more. The worldbuilding was already brilliantly done in these five chapters, just like the characters. I cannot wait to get to know Bryce more. After reading the ending of the fifth chapter, I'm curious to see how she will cope with that loss.

Overall, these few chapters have piqued my interest. I can't wait to get the full book in my hands!

Sincere thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the 5 chapter sampler. Chapter samples are such teases! March 3 is only a week away and I must content myself with that.

While already bogged down with typical Maas world-building lingo and repetitive phrasing, the opening chapters of Crescent City are extremely promising and I’m excited about this new world we get to explore! My heartstrings are already pulled in a way only Maas can do.

First, thank you for offering this excerpt because I know how excited everyone is to read the newest Sarah J Maas phenomenon. While I am interested in House of Earth and Blood enough to pick up the released copy later, I'm still conflicted about how I feel about it. I absolutely love Sarah's YA books so I will wait until I finish the final version of this book to form a full opinion about it. 💖

I was excited to get a sneak peek at this book, thanks to Net Galley and Bloomsbury. I loved SJ Mass’ a court of series and was excited to read this newest book.

This book takes place in a different fictional universe where there are faes, shifters, humans, and angels. It seems like they’re all “sorted” into a house so to speak when they drop and become immortal.

The book follows Bryce, a young half fae half human woman. I found it a rough start to be honest with a lot of concepts and people introduced in the first chapter. By the second chapter, the characters were more fleshed out and I started to get a better sense of who Bryce and her best friend Danika were.

The excerpt ending was a brutal cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read more and see what happens and how the main character deals with the events at the end of the excerpt.

House of Earth and Blood is my most anticipated book of the year. The ACOTAR and TOG series are my favorite books of all time so when I saw that Sarah J. Maas was releasing her first adult series, I was excited beyond words. After devouring this excerpt of the first five chapters, I have a strong feeling this book will also be one of my all time favorites.

Something I absolutely love about Sarah J. Maas’s works is her ability to fully develop her characters and create strong and realistic relationships between them. Personally, I was fully invested within the characters’ lives within these first couple of chapters. I love Bryce and Danika’s friendship and I could feel its power and love right off the pages.

When it came to world building, I felt that Sarah J. Maas masterfully wove together the information of the world with the story in these chapters. There are quite a bit of names and places to keep track of, but it propels the story along further, giving readers a better view of the world. I also adored getting introduced to the world she’s created, which Sarah J. Maas has described as vaguely resembling the Roman Empire, if it had not fallen.

Sarah J. Maas does not hold back on the heartbreak either and release day can’t come soon enough (especially after reading chapter 5 and crying). I am eagerly anticipating the rest of the story and know it will be as captivating as the first five chapters. I already have multiple copies preordered and will most likely be rereading these chapters until the full book releases!

Thank you so much to Bloomsbury and NetGalley for releasing this excerpt!

I like the story line I just feel like if you haven’t read any of her novels before and aren’t use to her writing style it may take a little bit to get use to. Otherwise, I definitely love it and plan on starting to read her novels.

This excerpt from Sarah J. Maas’ new book is the start of an epic journey. It was somewhat different from her other novels, but nonetheless, it is setting up to be epic. I cannot wait to read the entire book!

I need the rest of this book. I can't make a judgement on the whole book yet but the excerpt that I read was wonderful.

Discovered Sarah Maas through a book podcast and recently read A Court of Thorns & Roses. I found this book much easier to get into. I was drawn into the characters quickly. As the excerpt continued, I did start wondering where the plot was going to go and can honestly say I was shocked and felt like I was left with a good cliffhanger! I can’t wait to read the rest!

Thank you NetGalley for this sneak preview and excerpt of House of Earth and Blood.
A couple of things stood out right away in reading the excerpt.
#1 it suffers from a real “info dump” problem. This is not just urban fantasy that is a magical version of our current world. This is a completely different world with a different timeline (no B.C or A.D) and hierarchy of mythical creatures. So it takes a LOT of explaining which she does non-stop in the first few chapters. It is a lot for a reader to take in all at once and feels a little like a new writer move. It also introduces to female characters at the same time (more info dumping) and its hard to keep them straight. “Wait...who is the wolf shifter again?”
#2 there seems to be extra effort to make sure everyone is aware that this is an ADULT book. So almost every page has a expletive (mostly F bombs) and as the night goes on there is talk of sexual encounters and the main character uses illicit drugs and drinks to excess. It felt a little forced to me (who enjoys all of those things in books) and without reading the rest of the book I’m not quite sure if this was a point she was trying to make or if this is part of the journey the character will go on.
I will say that if the excerpt had ended a chapter earlier I probably couldn't have tried to read the rest of the book. It was way too much “tell not show” for me and the forced “look how bad ass these characters are with their party drugs and F-bombs” and I was done. BUT THEN it ends on a violent and graphic scene of carnage that will be so life changing for the main character and I really want to see what happens next.
Right now I’m giving it a tentative 3 star. It could be a 4 star depending on what happens in the rest of the book!

Holy mother of god 🔥

I just finished an excerpt of this beauty courtesy of @bloomsburypublishing and @netgalley and despite being both excited and sceptical IT DELIVERED 💪

I won't lie, I'm a fan of both Throne of Glass and ACOTAR so I know Maas's writing and was definitely intrigued by her foray into adult fiction despite being one of the best known NA author's currently.

From this excerpt I'm already enamoured with Bryce and the initial friendships she has and it's nice to read about a protagonist that is all about sex, drugs and violence 😈 I'm the biggest sucker for dark fantasy and gothic fiction and so far Crescent City looks to be a much darker book than were used to and I'm so ready to see where this book takes us 😝

I've pre-ordered and I'm ready to for its March 3rd release so I can devour the rest of it 😍

Review will be live 24th Feb

I'm sure there will be many fans of this book. But I'm afraid I just won't be one of them.

I loved the Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses books when both the series first started, but the last few books in both series by the author were decidedly not my favorites, and I don't know. I guess the sense of excitement wore off the longer the books got? But I was willing to give this new series a try, because it'll be the first proper one to be shelved as adult and I honestly wanted to like it.

Just knowing that this book was going to be 800+ pages is intimidating, but also, that's a lot of pages to give yourself time to handle world-building and introducing your characters. The thing about just reading this excerpt is that even in chapter one, the book is heavily info dumping. Like, I got from the blurb that the MC is Bryce and she's half-fae. But did I need to meet so many characters, social hierarchies, and all the city names all at once? It just got to the point where I really can't be bothered to continue reading because I don't know what's happening and I just find it hard to care.

What this book needed is to be edited down. By a lot. This is a DNF for me by chapter 3.

Okay! I was pretty excited to get a sneak peek at this book because I love Sarah J Maas and this being her first dive into adult fiction, I was in extra anticipation. However, I am going to completely honest with my thoughts here.

From the beginning, we are introduced to the different "houses" of Midgard that set up the world a bit. Houses of Earth and Blood, Sky and Breath, Many Waters, and Flame and Shadow. I loved that slight world building before the story has even begun that places all the creatures you will be coming across in this series.

Now when the story does begin, I feel like Maas is attempting to quickly immerse us into the world by way of pushing us into the deep end, head first.... I mean there are a lot of names, places, and groups thrown at us right away. Too many. And without much information or context.

As far as characters go, so far, I am not enjoying them very much. It feels very forced. Like "we are cool, bad ass characters!" And not in a believable way, but rather a try-hard way. There's a lot of cussing and grown up themes that definitely belong in an adult fiction and yet just dont feel right when you're reading it here. Its almost like she is trying to make it apparent it is her first book for adult readers which I doubt was the actual intention.

The story was starting to pick up at the end of the excerpt so I will most likely finish the book once it comes out because I truly enjoy Maas' other works. The execution is not my favorite thus far so I'm hoping it takes a positive turn, especially coming from one of my favorite authors.

First things first...holy cow. I knew I would love this as soon as Sarah J Maas announced the title. But little did I know I would be hooked from the first page. Her world-building is as eloquent as ever. Never missing a detail, and giving you just enough to know what is going on, and the type of world our characters are living in. I honestly should have known that after two years away, SJM would have not been kind to us. But, I am already so in love with Bryce's character, and the world itself that if I wasn't anxiously counting down the days to the release before, I am now.
