I choose 3 stars because with it only being the first few chapters I do not know how much I will love or hate the entire storyline. That said I am inclined to think this will be a very good series.
I have been looking forward to this book since it was announced like a year ago and I can't wait to finish reading it. The mix of genres was totally unexpected but I think she put it together in a way that actually works.

What a tease!!! This sample was too little to satisfy and it only made me want more! I cannot wait to have the entire book in my hands.

For me, this book was perfect...honest to goodness perfect! This is how the first book in a new series should start. A good foundation and a jaw dropping storyline with action and a few twist and turns. The world building was flawless, the characters were beautifully flawed and the story itself was fan-freaking-tastic!

Every time I thought I had things figured out, Maas said "Nope sweet summer child, I have a trick for you!" and hit me with something else. It was a glorious, heart racing, roller coaster ride.
The chemistry between Hunt and Bryce was undeniable...it sizzled, sparked, smoldered, and burned down entire city blocks.
The action in the book literally had me gripping the pages. I was stressed the hell out in the way that really good book action stresses you out. I want more, I need more...this was amazing!
A tip of the hat to Sarah J. Maas...so, so, good.

I will be preordering this! I can't wait!!!!

This definitely seems like a more grown up title compared to her other books, this is definitely not YA.

I can't wait to delve into this world and it's characters. She is such an amazing author.

"Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths."

The extended excerpt definitely has my attention, but I am hoping for more as I was not left with "I need this NOW"

The first chapter had me hooked and I cannot wait to read this book and see what happens with these characters. I'm new to Sarah J. Maas's writing but will definitely going and reading her backlist titles/series as well as this new one.

Talk about a tease of an excerpt. This was enough to get you excited and hurt you and dangle the rest of the book for you. Fortunately, March 3 is on the horizon and we can get our hands on this one soon.

In these 5 chapters, this book has already managed to shock me, hurt me, and got me to hype a book I previously only had lukewarm feelings for.

Fortunately, after reading this excerpt, I was able to snag the ARC from work and finish the book, but for those of you who are suffering, it's worth it. Y'all are in for a TREAT.

I really liked what I read so far, but was so sad to see all of these amazing characters I've just started to care about dead. Now I really need to see what happens next. I probably would have loved to see more of Dannika as well, but too late.

Wow, wow, wow.

Okay just to clarify, I haven’t actually finished the book - merely the five chapter excerpt received from NetGalley (thank you as always!)

But just OMG.

I’m a big SJM fan - but this one didn’t read like a traditional SJM book. Don’t get me wrong - I am HANGING OUT for next month when this book is published, I’ve had it preordered forever, and the teaser totally finished on an OMG moment, but it’s definitely a different read so far. And I am TOTALLY here for it 😁

I think I’ve got my head around the basics of the new world, albeit in its early stages of the world building process, and the various Houses and their sentient beings. I am loving Bryce, our kick ass heroine (some SJM things don’t change!) and the rest of her crew. The shock factor is high already!

Bring on 3 March ❤️

I’m a super big fan of Sarah J. Maas and all the books of hers that I’ve read so far and I really liked the excerpt. I’ve definitely looking forward to picking up the book when it’s released.
The only small piece of criticism I have that that this is in the same vein as her other books and I would’ve loved to see a brand new concept from her, something completely different from her other books, especially since her other books are series’, one being a large series.

I'll be honest, I don't know why I clicked on this excerpt. I'm certainly not shy about not being much of a fan of this author and her work. But it seemed like a low-investment peek into what this book, the first of Maas' new adult series, would be like. And overwhelmingly, I feel mostly ambivalence with a side of confusion. There's a lot of world-building, which is helped a bit by a glossary of terms near the beginning so, thank you for that, and a set-up which I won't say completely lost me but I definitely know I was just kind of reading along even if I wasn't 100% sure of references or meaning to things.

As for the characters, there was a lot of time spent setting up an existing friend group and dynamic, even a possible romance, before things go sideways right at the end of this teaser. Having not refamiliarized myself with the synopsis before diving in, I'm not sure where things might go after this point (beyond the obvious vengeance questing), but I also find myself curious enough to.. maybe.. pick this up and read on. Which I guess means the tease was a success. My expectations are pretty low, and certain things felt very in line with the Maas-elements I don't normally like (specifically in her characters), and I actually felt the writing of this far less pretty and compulsive than her other works, but.. I guess we'll see.

Thank you so much for this excerpt. I was considering buying a signed copy but reading these amazing chapters just cemented it. Vivid writing and compelling world building. Great job.

I have left unbiased reviews on both goodreads and my bookstagram page "Urban fantasy lovers rejoice!!! I recieved an excerpt (5 chapters) from the amazing upcoming new Crescent City series by Sarah Maas in exchange for an unbiased review. I love her writing but have been disenchanted with urban fantasy as a genre lately. Well that dry spell is over. I'm now convinced that I need to preorder a signed copy. March 3 2020 is the release date. Thank you Netgalley and Sarah J. Maas"

Bryce Quinlan, half human and half fae, have been living a fun life working and partying while enjoying her roommate’s wolf pack as friends. Besties since college, Danika and Bryce live in a world of magic and mayhem with several supernatural groups trying to dominate as well as humans who don’t like being at the bottom of the heap. Bryce and Danika live in a less than desirable area so just getting home can be a challenge.

This fascinating new world looks to be quite epic. As this review is just for an excerpt of the first five chapters which set up the world in which Bryce and her friends live, much remains of the story totaling at 816 pages. This book will prove to be quite intense I suspect especially since Bryce staggers home from a bacchanal of partying to find her friend dead and dismembered.

Fans of Ms. Maas will be excited and mostly well pleased with this new series called Crescent City. From the synopsis readers will glean how the rest of the story will follow: “As Bryce and Hunt[a fallen angel assigned to help] dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.”

**I have received this ARC Excerpt from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

I was lucky enough to get to read the first five chapters of this highly anticipated book by none other then Sarah J. Maas. And what an exciting read it was. I am so ready to dive in to Crescent City and finish the story. I am very interested to get to know all the races and houses and the history of how this world came to be. I am so excited that I have pre-ordered my copy already and am anxiously waiting for it's release. March 3 cannot come soon enough.

I AM SO DANG EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK NOW! This excerpt was nothing but a giant tease that left me wanting for more, more, more! I am so ready for SJM to break into the adult fiction realm with this new series because I am here for it! From the first page I was sucked in and I seriously cannot wait to read more about these characters and this world!

Thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for sending an excerpt of this book.
It's really difficult to give feedback on what is such a short section of the book (I believe the final draft of this book is 800 pages?), so I'm going to do my best, but I'm not sure that my star rating is really all that important, so I'll try to just lay out details here.

Plot: Half-human, Half-fae, Bryce lives a good life in Crescent City: a good job, good friends, and good parties. There are a lot of character names to learn in the beginning of the book: mostly Bryce's friends and coworkers, though I suspect that not all of them will be truly relevant to the story. Since this is more of snapshot, we really get more of a sense for Bryce than anything. She's sarcastic, often has a bad attitude, and is extremely loyal to her friends. At the end of the fifth chapter, an extremely brutal event sets off what I assume will be the central action and motivation for the book. Fans of her previous series should note that the setting and tone here is pretty different: though this is very much a fantasy world, it's much more modern and urban, and she certainly veers straight into adult territory (language and sexual content) right away.

I loved Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses Series, and I was extremely excited for this book (ok half of that is based on the cover but still), but I'm really not sure what to make of that excerpt! I have to be honest! I still recognize and love some of Maas's signature writing characteristics in this book: women who don't apologize for "bad behavior," brooding boys, etc. However, this was a lot to keep up with, and I was a little thrown by just how "adult" this was. Don't get me wrong: I don't really care about content. However, this almost felt over-corrective, as if Maas was going out of her way to make it clear that this is NOT Young Adult.

That said, the fifth chapter was far and away the most interesting, which makes me think that I would really like the rest of the book. The ending really had me hooked. So even though my "rating" for this is not super high, I don't think that will keep me from reading the rest of the book. It's really difficult to give a snapshot of an 800 page book!

I got to read five chapters and I'm hooked. Wow. SJM's storytelling and descriptions are unparalleled as usual, and I already love Bryce. And know Hunt is going to ruin my life. I knew SJM wouldn't disappoint and she didn't - her new world is brilliant and interesting and complex. I love the dynamics and dialogue that feel natural and real and funny like SJM's other works. Overall, I can't wait till 3/3.

I am even more excited to read this book now. I almost wish I hadn't read this excerpt. I love the characters that are introduced, and the world it's set it.

I am reserving further thoughts and opinions for the full novel, but I really love what I've read so far.

Such a promising hook! I can already get a sense of the extensive world building and it wasn't so heavy that it was hard to read. In fact it was peppered with enough light dialogue and action to simultaneously already get me invested in the characters, so where the excerpt cut off is brutal! Need more now and I cannot wait to dive in more!
