I'm not sure how many volumes total there are for The Promised Neverland but the first volume is already quite a setup. for the series. This is The Great Escape for the Captain Underpants demographic, because in spite of the dark themes, the book is still very much kid-friendly. Emma, Norman, and Ray are the leaders of the orphanage kids and their planning puts my own organizational skills to shame. An animated series was produced from this title but only has one season; I'll have to keep reading to get to where the anime ends. The story continues to be absolutely gripping and a little bit heartbreaking. (I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this manga.

The premise of this is absolutely terrifying. The idea is well thought out, and the drawings later in the serial are fantastic!

I wasn’t a fan of the art style throughout, and the characters were a little unlikable at times. The writing made it a bit sluggish, the kids talked about their plans too much with excessive repetition. Overall, I really enjoyed where this story is going, and I plan to continue in the series!

ARc Copy...very good but wow this is going to haunt for a long while! Without giving away to much...the basic premise is doused out after the opening depiction of an idyllic childhood, which makes it even more nightmarish/horrifying in feel when contrasted with the real purpose of the home.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3 Stars

A superb beginning to a chilling mystery that you’ll struggle to put down.

With a structurally intricate plotline that builds tension naturally until the first big reveal, you will breeze through first this volume. Although I don't think the characterisation for the main trio was as strong as it could have been, the building blocks were there for an interesting dynamic. I understood the base conflict that would drive the story for its first arc and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

I read this book as a commentary on the treatment of animals in the food industry and although I’m sure that my feelings on the manga as a whole will develop as I continue reading I think it shows the intricacy of Kaiu Shirai’s storytelling that in only one volume I felt such passion from the writer. They clearly have great intentions for this manga.

Should Read This Book if you Like 💕:

Trigger Warnings: child death.

This was such an interesting combination of absolutely adorable artwork, with a pretty dark subject matter, and I really enjoyed it! It tells the story of Grace Field House Orphanage and the children who live there, happy and well looked after...but they cannot leave.

The Positives: I loved the artwork here. It is very clean and simple, with a wholesome feeling to it, appropriate for a story following 11 year olds. The story is really compelling and it definitely took a turn that I wasn't expecting at all, which was fantastic. I think the world created here has real potential to be fabulous, but we don't get a great deal of it in this first volume.

The Negatives: I thought the characters were a little bit stereotypical, particularly Emma, who is automatically the caring one, because she is a girl. This rubbed me up the wrong way a bit.

Overall, I think this is a really interesting world and will definitely be picking up more volumes of this series in the hope that our characters gain a little depth.

[ I received an ARC on Netgalley in return for an honest review. ]

This manga is absolutely amazing, (and honestly SO terrifying)! I went into the story with no clue on what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found!

I really love all three of the main characters (Emma, Ray, and Norman), and I find it so interesting to follow along with their stategies. Half the time, my heart is pounding away and I expect something to happen, but then I'm completely taken by surprise! I can understand why this manga receives such good ratings because it really is well deserved.

I can't wait to continue with the rest of this series! (The cliffhanger is killing me!)

This was not what I was expecting at all when I started reading this but I really enjoyed it. It was screwed up and creepy and horrific but so interesting to read. I really liked seeing how the characters had to solve problems and figure out their escape.

I’m really interested in reading the next volumes and finding out what happens for sure.

Emma has lived at Grace Field House orphanage most of her life. Under the care of a woman they all refer to as "Mom", Emma and the rest of the kids at the orphanage live a comfortable life. Despite having to take daily tests, there's always clean clothes and good food awaiting everyone. But Emma and her friends soon learn not everything at the orphanage is what it seems-- they're actually being raised to feed demons.

I had heard a lot about this series, so I was excited to read it, but it ended up not being for me. I wasn't really interested in the story, and found myself bored throughout it. There were some interesting aspects, but overall, just not my cup of tea.

Not what I was expecting. Going solely off the title and cover I would have guessed it was a Peter Pan style story of precocious young people. Yeah, I was very wrong. The art inside the book does a great job of being unsettling enough so that the reader immediately realizes something is off without giving away the game too soon. The psychological interplay is interesting with enough information given out to justify the plot.

Good if you like To Your Eternity or Tokyo Ghoul.

A generally very strong and dynamic start to the series: the fast pacing suits the story well, Emma is fantastic protagonist and the familial relationships between the children is an absolute delight to see develop.

However, the racist design and presentation of Krone in the series is prominent and not to be overlooked.

This manga has just enough disturbing twists to make it intriguing instead of completely horrifying. The characters, such as Emma and Norman, bring an unexpected brightness to the otherwise dark story, and their determination and intelligence move the story forward. The artwork lends itself well to the world that's been established and really brings the story to life. Each chapter keeps you wanting to know more--about the orphans, Grace Field House, and the demons.

Just by reading the blurb I knew The Promised Neverland was going to be a unique and fascinating manga which would leave me feeling utterly spellbound.

This manga is breathtaking.
The illustrations in this book are PHENOMENAL - easily one of the most beautiful manga books I own.

The story is captivating yes, but it is the artwork that is painstakingly beautiful. This is a fantasy novel and in every panel you can feel the strokes of magic bouncing off the pages with each stroke. The magic system too is unique and is borne from ink boiled from the root of a specific tree.

I am completely enchanted by the story, the characters the artwork. I just know that if the series continues in the same vein as this opening volume, this will be the manga I recommend to EVERYONE! I love how much emotion is portrayed by the characters, particularly with all the horrors and delights they experiences over such a short period of time. Their perseverance and determination is inspiring and I can't wait to find out where their adventures takes them next!

I've read a lot of mangas in my teenage years, something like 15 years ago, but stopped over time. I've been more and more interested in reading mangas again and am very happy to start with this book.

Working in a bookstore, i've seen terrirfic sales for each volume of this serie over time and I honestly think this book was amazing. I am in LOVE with the children and my heart was pounding as I did not want anything bad to happen to them. The plot is dark and intriguing, yet not violent at all at this point (even though it's about demons eating kids).

I will definitely read the next volumes and keep exploring mangas. Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this.

Actual rating: 3.5

Kaiu Shirai's The Promised Neverland is a twisted fantasy manga. Readers follow Emma, Ray, and Norman (per VIZ translations to English) as they live in Grace Field House. Emma and Norman learn their orphanage is actually a farm in which humans are raised as food for demons. Their goal becomes escape.

This was definitely an interesting manga. I enjoyed the story and art style, and felt there was a good start to the series. I'm not overly attached to the characters just yet, but would be interested in continuing with the next volume.
