Enjoyed the magic in this book. Maybe a little too real? That's when I start getting nervous honestly.
Overall this was a really fun book. I really liked that this book was about friendship. I felt that the characters had really good chemistry. I think the mystery could have been more fleshed out. However I understand that this book was more character driven than plot.
DNF this book was not for me.
Middle school literature but could of been an amazing YA with more development and explanations
What a amazing book! I feel in love with this one. The story is spectacular, all the characters are super vivid. I recommend with my heart.
I really, really enjoyed this one and can't wait for the sequel! I mean, lesbian witches??? Yes, please!
This book was really weird but in a good way! I loved the group of friends and how supportive they were of each other. The atmosphere was wonderfully written and I was caught up in the magic of it all. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to what Clarke will write next.
I really enjoyed this witchy read and its unique magic system and characters. I loved the very teen-like dynamic of the relationships in the book.
I wanted to love this book, I really did. A story about a queer witch, hexing, and revenge? Yessss..
However, this book just did not do it for me. I had a rough time connecting with the flow of the book. I also feel that the characters just fell a little flat.
I enjoyed this book so much!
It was a bit much at first, but the world building made the strange wording make sense. This group of teenage girls coming into magic and suing to exact revenge is a familiar troupe. However, the further you go the more the build up and world building brings itself to life.
The cliffhanger makes things fun and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Fantastic, weird, witchy, and sapphic, all swirled together in a delightful dessert. A great read, especially for those who have enjoyed some of the other recent sapphic witch reads, like The Lost Coast.
DNF for me. I just couldn't get into the main character's voice and sadly couldn't make it past the first few chapters.
here's a link to the video where i vlog my reading and review the book: https://youtu.be/Anb8IWFWi_g
I'm going to be honest...I wasn't the biggest fan of this book. I didn't finish this one either. I think it was just not my vibe which is why I'm not that hard on it, because I know someone out there will love this book. I just don't think the writing of this or the characters were a good mesh with my very specific, very picky tastes. Again, though, I can see many people enjoying this story.
The Scapegracers had everything I was looking for! Give me Queer Witches with a Mean Girls vibe and teenage angst ANY DAY! I love that this book was very much about girl power and the MC had a strong group of friends from, almost, the beginning. A lot of times, when you read a synopsis that has “outcast teenage lesbian witch”, that character is lonely and treated like utter crap. This book turns that idea on its head!
Electrifying, witchy and angsty...All the ingredients needed for this book to keep you under its spell. </b>
This is about a teen witch that forms a coven with some unlikely friends. And they find that the more their powers grow, the more attention that they’re bringing to themselves. Both the good and the bad kind...
This is such a highly underrated book! Why isn’t there more hype surrounding this book?
This book was so dark, witchy and atmospheric. Let me tell you, I was living for it! The book actually really gave me “Thr Craft” vibes but with a lot more diversity. The book is significantly gay. (Which, bonus points.) but I particularly enjoyed the sapphic romance. It was refreshing to see as you usually don’t see that represented very often.
I also really enjoyed watching the girls grow. Not just their powers but also watching them grow closer together. The female friendships were so very well done! Their friendship had me smiling a lot throughout the book. :) Speaking of the girls, they all had distinct hobbies and interests. And they ALL were fiery and independent. But they were different enough that it’s very easy to tell them apart. It can be difficult to have more than a couple characters and have them all stand out individually. This author pulled that off well!
The over arching plot was another part of the book that was enjoyable for me. I found that I was really engaged through the entirety of the book. I never wanted to put it down. And when I had to, I spent my whole time thinking about it and wanting to pick it back up again haha. As someone who prefers plot based books, that made me happy!
The reason for docking a star is because of the writing style. I admittedly liked that the writing was so easy to read. But there were parts that it felt a little choppy. I just wasn’t gelling with it. And I would have liked to get a little more of a back story on the other girls. I was so interested in each of the characters that it would have been nice to learn about their pasts too. Not just Sideways’.
Overall, this was such a fun book and I’m excited for the second one! I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for an angsty YA witchy book with LGBTQ rep!
The Scapegracers was definitely dark and witchy and a really good gothic "autumn" book (which I read in spring, but whatever). It was weird, it dragged a little, and it was definitely more of a character-driven novel than a plot-driven novel. I think that's why I had some issues with it? But the friendships that were formed was a nice touch. Sideways (okay weeeeeird name), the gritty and angsty outcast, befriends the popular girls of school, and you expect them to be bitchy and judgmental, but you get quite the opposite, which was a bit refreshing in a YA novel. If you like character-based books with a slow-going plot, but are into believable witchy magic systems and revenge, then this is your book!
This is a special kind of book. There's some magic woven in the words here, like the writing itself was the spells the girls cast. The magic isn't treated like a cool bonus, but instead as part of the world, as one of the characters almost.
And then there are the girls themselves. It's rare to see a group of friends in a book made up basically solely of LGBT girls. And it's rarer still for all of them to be such cool people, so well developed, so complicated. And loving each other so much. No girl hate in The Scapegracers, no sir.
There are witch hunters, magic curses, getting revenge on creepy boys - basically everything one might want from a book about teen witches. A perfect Halloween read, that will also make any other day feel like Halloween.
2020 killed my ability to focus on anything but the news and politics; hence the reason it took me 7 months to finish this book. Scapegtacers is fantastic. Interesting, well developed characters and an outstanding plot. Looking forward to Book 2!
really really liked this book. it was really well written and i loved all the characters. it was a bit of a slow start, but once i got into it, i was hooked. cant wait for the sequel.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley
DNF
I tried but i think this is a bit too YA for me. The writing is fine and the story looked promising but i can't relate to the characters at all and i don't think the plot is going to grip me
