โ€˜It feels good to know something others donโ€™t. I like knowing more than they do. I like the secrets I get to keep safe.โ€™

The concept of this book intrigued me. The story is literally the diary of a serial killer and each part is a different age of the child. It was fascinating following the story from the point of view of Ruby from when she was just a young child up until she was a teenager. Adding another layer to the story and her point of view was that she had, I am guessing, undiagnosed autism, and was raised by her father, a serial killer, after losing her mother when she was 2.

I thorough enjoyed this book. I was drawn in right from the start and found it difficult to put down at times. The book was written in parts which were of a different age and then there were diary entries in each of the parts which made it easy to read and quite quick. Although I felt like from early on I knew what was going to happen in the end I still wanted to continue.

Overall, I would recommend if youโ€™re looking for something different to read as it certainly was like nothing else I have ever read before!

Thank you Kindle and Netgalley for the ARC, in exchange for an honest opinion.

The diary of a serial killer - L.A. Detwiler

Review from @netgalley

The synopsis of this book really drew me in and I couldn't wait to read it.

However, this book wasn't quite what I had expected. The story is told from the point of view from a child and reads from her diary extracts during the time she was living with her dad who, later finds out is a serial killer.

As Ruby was growing into a teenager, I found the writing style still seemed like she was very young.

It was a quick read but quite predictable.

I thought the concept of the book was really interesting , it got pretty dark at times! Did it blow me away... no, but I dont think this was the books fault, I just for some reason couldn't connect to the story and cant put my finger on why. I have been hitting the thrillers pretty hard lately so dont know if that has impacted on my enjoyment of the story, so I would like to try again with it at a later date.

Thank you netgalley for sending me this ARC in exchange for my review.

2.5 stars

This wasn't quite what I was expecting, but the format was interesting and different from most books of this genre I've read in the past.

The story is told from the POV of a child (who ages throughout the book) of a serial killer, as she "talks" through her diary. It was a quick read, but it wasn't as engaging as I'd hoped. The drama and tension just weren't the same, due to how the story unfolded vs. seeing it through the father's eyes, etc. The "creep factor" just wasn't the same. Also, due to the structure of this novel, it was hard to connect with the characters, making it hard to completely stay engaged.

I'd consider reading books by this author in the future, but I'd want to be sure the format was different.

I was in the mood for a mystery read and the title of this book stood out to me being from the serial killer's child's POV. Other than the title, I didn't have any idea what the book was about. The Diary of a Serial Killer's Daughter is written in diary format and follows the life of Ruby Marlowe. Ruby loves her father so much and would never betray his trust or break his rules. One day Ruby hears her father coming home and heading towards his shed, she is curious to see what happens in her father's shed as this is his happy place where she is forbidden to enter. At the back of the shed is a little hole in the wall, where Ruby can peek through. What she sees is a woman lying on a table and the color red everywhere, dripping on the floor. Red is her favorite color and watching her dad becomes her obsession as she over the years watches her dad kill the woman and play with them. Her diary is her only friend and so she writes about her life which in turn is detailing her father's crimes. As Ruby gets older she soon learns that what her dad is doing is wrong and that he is, in fact, a bad guy and as she ages into her teen years, Ruby must decide whether to turn in her father or become an accomplice to his murders and let him continue killing. As this was written in diary format and a childish narrator, in parts was slow to read but as the book went along it kept you wondering what actions Ruby was going to take.

This story is dark ... darker than anything I have ever read. Be warned.

According to the blurbs Ms. Detwiler has put out on Facebook, she wanted to explore the dynamics involved in being related to a serial killer. And, man-oh-man, did she accomplish that in spades. This book is written in diary form from the perspective of a daughter, beginning when she was a young girl on through when she was a teenager. Ruby, the young girl in the story, discovered her father went out in the middle of the night and she wondered why. She discovered a peephole in the garage ... the garage her father warned her to stay away from because it was dangerous. She always took "Daddy" at his word, staying away from the garage until she couldn't. She used the peephole to spy on "Daddy." What she discovered surprised her and mystified her all at the same time. In the end, she wanted to protect herself, wanted to understand "Daddy's" proclivities, wanted to protect him at all costs fearing she would lose him. This tale takes you on a journey you are not soon to forget. I am still "digesting" the story and how close to the truth it may really be.

Be warned, again, though ... it is a very, very dark tale.

This is a really cool story concept and one that I wanted to read. Unfortunately I had a lot of trouble connecting with the character and the overall story. I really wanted to get into it but it wasnโ€™t for me.

The Diary of a Serial Killer's Daughter is very fitting for my taste, and it is definitely intriguing, but I couldn't really get into it. I wasn't a fan of Ruby's voice, and so I found it hard to continue. The concept is cool, as is the story; I just don't care for the telling.

Love, love, loved this book!! I literally have not been able to put this down. LA Detwiler spins a deliciously dark domestic and psychological thriller. So much love and sacrifice to protect those closest to us. Yet are the reasons justified?
The POV was awesome. Told through the eyes of a gentle spirited little girl.
So many twists and turns just left my jaw dropped. Such a great read, highly recommend this one.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book

Wow what did I just read??!! The story of a young girl told through her diary as she discovers her dad is a serial killer. Of course she doesn't know this at first but the older she gets the more she understands. Am I totally messed up for loving her relationship with her dad? Despite what he done to others they had a great bond, something I've not experience in my real life.. wow do I wish a serial killer was my dad??๐Ÿ˜‚ I felt so sorry for Ruby, especially during the epilogue. This book was great, weird, horrifying, interesting, unique and worth a read. Towards the end I did find it quite repetitive and got slightly bored but I had to know the outcome. Would her dad be caught? Would Ruby follow in his footsteps?

Thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book to review!

Ruby knows her daddy's deep dark secret. Its scary but kind of exciting too. On the nights he works in the garage she sneaks to her secret spot and watches her daddy play the killing game. When she first started watching she really didn't know what she was seeing. Just that everything was red. Red is her and her daddy's favorite color.
A dark thriller that keeps you in suspense, and hanging onto the edge of your chair..
Written as a diary, you get Ruby's age what she thinks she sees progressing to when she's older and knows what she sees.
Thrilling darkness at best!

An ARC of this novel was sent to me by NetGalley for reviewing purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I found this book interesting based on how it's formatted- it allowed me to get to know the characters in depth.

This was a great book told in a diary format which was a little different for me but it wasn't to bad to follow I liked the writing and the characters and how everything comes out in the end I received a free copy from netgalley and I'm voluntarily writing this review

This book was entertaining in that the story is told completely in a diary form. That is how you get to know the characters and see the actions, through a growing girlโ€™s eyes. One thing I would say is that I think it would be good to see the maturity of the entries change a little over the years. While the voice wouldnโ€™t change drastically, I think some little tweaks would show some evidence of aging.

What a premise! This is the diary of Ruby Marlowe (the daughter of a single dad who she adores) which she begins at age 6/7 at the suggestion of her father who hopes it will help her to deal with her feelings. Ruby has a condition (some kind of autism perhaps? Itโ€™s never clearly said) and has trouble interacting with her peers, but she loves words and poetry. One of the first entries involves her witnessing her dad dismembering a body, but Ruby doesnโ€™t realise thatโ€™s whatโ€™s happening and becomes obsessed with the swirls the blood creates. As she grows up, will she protect her fatherโ€™s secret or turn him in?

The descriptions are gory, and I am a softie so I didnโ€™t like them, but the plot had me hooked! I donโ€™t want to give anymore away but I think as long as you can cope with the disturbing and gory subject matter itโ€™s a brilliant book and I highly recommend it.

Thank you so much to the publisher and #NetGalley for the free advance copy in return for an unbiased review.

Wow. This book was something else! It was like nothing I had read before!

The book is told in first person and literally had me on the edge of my seat.

Sometimes when you read a lot of thrillers, they do become a bit samey and it takes a special one to really stand out. This is it !

I will remember this book for a long time!

Highly recommended!
