In "My Wild Life", Suzi Eszterhas writes about her life as a wildlife photographer. The book is a fascinating glimpse into her life, full of amazing photographs, and encourages young girls to consider careers that are not necessarily thought of as being for women. Eszterhas mentions endangered species and the importance of environmental conservation.

This would be a wonderful addition to a school library and a good book for elementary-aged children to read for units about the environment and careers.

As a school-based Speech-Language Pathologist, I can see using this book with children who are motivated by non-fiction, animals, and amazing photos (there are lots to describe.)

'My Wild Life' is fascinating and fun! I would have adored this book in elementary school. The author shares her firsthand stories, tips, and photographs from her career as a wildlife photographer. This book contains so many stunning, fun photographs of a variety of animals. I would recommend this for upper elementary school aged children, especially ones who are interested in animals and photography.

Thank you NetGalley and OwlKids Books for providing this ARC.

Suzi tells about her experiences in living where the wildlife is. It helps her to get the fantastic photographs of the wildlife. Somehow it makes the wildlife not so afraid of her yet they are cautious and careful. She often lives in a tent with no nearby bathrooms to use and deals with many insects. She learns as much as she can about the animal she hopes to photograph so she knows what to do in a dangerous situation. Her life is filled with the wonders of the different animals life.

It’s a great book to read. The pictures that are with the text are spectacular. I loved reading and looking at the pictures though I must admit I wouldn’t want to live the way she does to get photographs.. I’m glad there are photographers that do as it makes one aware not only wildlife but also the endangered precise in the world.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This book was a great autobiography type about Suzi an animal photographer. I really liked seeing all the fun pictures included in the book.

Summary: Suzi Eszterhas shares how she became a wildlife photographer, beginning with her experiences as a child taking pictures of her cats in her backyard. Over the years, she has traveled around the globe, often living in a tent and enduring difficult and occasionally dangerous conditions (no showers, lots of insects, airsickness while taking aerial photos, a charging gorilla) to capture the photographs that have appeared in her many books and helped raise awareness for endangered species. Many of her photographs appear in the text. The final pages answer some of the questions she is most frequently asked. 32 pages; grades 2-5.

Pros: As a Suzi Eszterhas fan who has promoted her books to kids over the years (most notably Moto and Me), I am delighted to learn that she’ll have this up-close-and-personal look at her life coming out in the fall. Kids will enjoy reading about her adventurous life and seeing her photos of a wide variety of animals. Clearly, wildlife photography has been a boys’ club for a long time, and Suzi explains how she had to prove she was tough enough to be a part of it–which this book makes very clear she has done successfully.

Cons: I got this copy off of NetGalley, and it didn’t include all the photos…however, I feel confident they will be excellent and highly appealing to kids.

This is a fantastic book for kids who are interested in wildlife photography. The author has over 20 years of experience and talks simply about the perks and drawbacks of her career. It's filled with spectacular photos she took, along with little stories about what happened during the shoot. She's refreshingly honest about how difficult it can be (waking up to beetles in your nose! a photo of her pee bottle that she has to use while hiding in a blind and not moving for hours...) but her enthusiasm for her job comes through in every paragraph. It's short enough for even young kids to read and to keep their interest, but long enough to give a good amount of information and insight into her life/job. The photos are incredible, and her tone is friendly and helpful. A great book all around.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

Wow, this is a cool book. Tons of pictures (a few with maps and arrows showing where they were taken) and easy to read/conversational writing from the author. You really get a feel for what it's like to be a wildlife photographer. There's even a question/answer section at the back of the book in case budding wildlife photographers have questions unanswered at the end of the book. I checked out Suzi's website and there are even more awesome animal pictures!

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC! All opinions are my own and are unbiased.

This was a quick, interesting read. Nice to outline the highs and lows of a chosen career. It would have been nice to include links to the conservation projects

My Wild Life is a fascinating book about a wildlife photographer. Eszterhas is such an interesting person and it was so fun to get a glimpse into her fascinating life. She has allowed us to experience the range of her experiences from huge excitement to even boredom as she sometimes must wait for a long time for the animals to do something interesting. She shares many of her photographs in her book, and they are engaging and just bursting in their portrayal of the energy and lives of these animals.

I am glad I got to read this book, and I love that this has been written for children in particular! Eszterhas is passionate about her work, and she is a also a model of patience and perseverance.

Thanks to #netgalley for the advance reading copy. #MyWildLife

My Wild Life by Suzi Eszterhaz is a wonderful introduction to the life of a wildlife photographer. The pictures are stunning and the dialogue is informative and entertaining. This book will be a good addition for middle school readers and especially to encourage girls to try something different.

children's nonfiction (4th-7th grades)
a practical introduction to wildlife photography, including some of the less pleasant details (insects laying eggs in one's foot, getting sick in a bag while taking aerial photos from a small plane, not having access to a toilet, keeping a pee bottle separate from one's water bottle, lots and lots of waiting). I appreciated the parts about getting help from local trackers as well as working with scientists--both of these groups are essential.
