The Most Beautiful Thing is absolutely charming and beautiful work. Ideal for reading with children and ready for the classroom shelf.

"The Most Beautiful Thing" is a gem. The story touches on the feelings and experiences of generations of the family, from poverty to the heartwarming meaning of love and how the elders are truly our precious gift. The illustrations are breathtaking. Loved it.

The Most Beautiful Thing by Kao Kalia Yang, illustrated by Khoa Le, is a beautiful thing indeed. Yang tells a story of intergenerational love, respect for grandparents, and enjoying the things that we have and the people that we love even when we might want more. The story is a personal one, based in her own life and relationship with her grandmother, and offers a look into the lives of Hmong refugees, their children, and their grandchildren. Le's illustrations are breathtaking, and she truly breathes extra life into this tender tale with her stunning pictures.
I would definitely recommend this book, especially to older children, and even to adults.

A cute book that is dedicated to relationships. It shows how beauty is not bound to circumstances. Pure things are always beautiful, how much old they could get. Artwork is wonderful and very colourful. I wish font could be bigger. Language is simple for kids to read. A very good book in times when interaction among family members is progressively falling.
A very good kids book.

Wonderful art portrays a beautiful story about the sacrifices family makes to have a better life for their kids/grandkids.

This story of a child growing up in her multi-generational family with her grandmother, who was a Hmong refugee, reflects the lives of a few students I've known over the years. I don't know of a lot of books that reflect that experience, so this is certainly a welcome addition to the market. It also gently confronts the issue of growing up with poverty as a part of life. I liked the story and I think the right reader, probably an upper elementary reader or a child with a parent that wants to discuss the book, would appreciate it as well. The illustrations are beautiful and the text is fairly readable. I'll be purchasing it for my library when it's published.

I wasn’t able to read any of it the other thing my kindle copy has was the cover but it’s very pretty

I was immediately drawn in by the stunning illustrations, and the story quickly hooked me nearly as quickly. A stunning, incredibly moving book. Will purchase for my library.

Such a beautiful book! I definitely learned a lot about the lives and trials of being a Hmong refugee, and I loved the familial aspect. I'm looking forward to when this book is released into the world

Wonderful message. Beautiful art. This is a fantastic book to share with students. Sometimes we forget that even though we might think something different about the people around us than ourselves, our internalized messages about ourselves might be different.

I really, really, really love the cover and the amazing illustrations inside!
The story is authentic. It's nostalgic for me in so many ways.
The love of a family is well defined definitely!
I love books which talk about grandparents. And this one did it well I say.
Life lessons even for the adult me. If someone cannot afford something, it doesn't mean you are living a crappy life. Life is beautiful with a loving family. It's all that matters at the end of the day. This book tells this so vividly.
However,I wish the narration was more wholesome. I felt like some parts were incomplete as some pages seemed to end abruptly.
Loved this small book nevertheless.
Thanks #NetGalley for the ARC.

The Most Beautiful Thing by Kao Kalia Yang is a gorgeous #ownvoices picture book. The illustrations alone will keep any child engaged, but the story itself is so touching and emotional that it will resonate for audiences of all ages. It's a beautiful lesson in not always having what you want, but growing into the perspective of getting what you need and valuing the simple things in the people around you.

I can’t describe how beautiful and emotional this book was. It was so touching and the fact that it was own voices made this all the more spectacular
This book is told from the prospective of a young child talking about her life looking after her grandmother
It really made me appreciate all that I have In my life and how unfair it is that not everyone has the same opportunities. Please read this!

A beautifully illustrated story about the love for a grandmother. Made me miss my own grandmother and the stories she shared with me when I was growing up.

“The Most Beautiful Thing” is a deeply touching story about a granddaughter, Kalia, and her grandmother. Her grandmother shares stories of her childhood, we learn of her hardships, and some of the traditions of Hmong culture. It’s a poignant reflection on youth and our relationship to our elders.
This is a story I will read over and over again with my children. It addresses poverty, appreciating what you have, seeing beauty in who people are and not what they wear or look like, and how we take care of and value each other. It’s also really wonderful to see Hmong characters and stories in this book. Our community has one of the largest Hmong populations in the US, and it’s really important that children grow up being exposed to stories from all cultures. One of the best things about Yang’s story is the way it includes language; she offers a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book so children can practice the language of the writer and the one reflected in the culture of the story.
This is a poignant, touching story about family, culture, love, and identity that reminds children to listen to and care for elders and remember to see beauty in human connections and rather than possessions or superficial appearances. I highly recommend this!

The story from the author's childhood is a beautiful tell of despite not always having what you want, there can be beauty found in the things we do have. And that is an important message for everyone of all ages.
Thank you to NetGalley for letting me have an e-copy of this.

I requested and received an e-ARC from NetGalley and Lerner Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review.
The illustrations in this book were colourful and beautiful. I liked this story, although I wish the author had included a footnote when she used Hmong words, I wanted to know what the words meant and Google translate was only able to translate one of them. It was pointed out there is a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book that I missed. Went back, read the guide and it was very helpful, thank you :)

I was stunned by the beauty of this book. It is colourful, bright and boldly illustrated and though the story is tinged with sadness, it is overall a celebration of life, appreciating your family and wealth in non monetary forms.
Kalia's family live simply with little food and no money for extravagances but there is a lot of love. Grandma is precious and the grandchildren feel honoured to care for her, whether it is helping her bathe, taking care of her nails, it is all done with love.
Grandma is a Hmong, who grew up taking care of her siblings, knowing intense hunger "We lived always with hunger eating us on the inside". With her one tooth, Grandma was always happy to eat anything shared with her.
Kalia, as she grows older, begins to want more things. She has grown tired of being hungry for food, clothing and treats. It comes to Grandma, old and wise, to teach Kalia about the beauty of her life.
Completely stunning in story and art- this is "The Most Beautiful Thing"

The Most Beautiful Thing is a children’s book that explores the relationship between a grandmother and her grandchild. When I read this to Lily she was transfixed by the fictional grandmother, as she is dearly missing hers. The story magnifies the grandchild’s love for her grandmother through her selfless actions and her loving attention.

A bit from the blurb:
“Drawn from author Kao Kalia Yang's childhood experiences as a Hmong refugee, this moving picture book portrays a family with little money-and a great deal of love. Weaving together Kalia's story with that of her beloved grandmother, the book moves from the jungles of Laos to the family's early years in the United States. Stunning illustrations from Vietnamese illustrator Khoa Le being this intergenerational tale to life.”

Themes of love, family, ageing, and caring. I would recommend this book for children aged 3 and beyond.

What a beautiful story! I like looking for children's books that feature different cultures, because in the back of my mind, I keep this running list of books that I think I would like my future children to read. Seeing more books that feature different cultures makes me really happy because this isn't something I've been lucky to have growing up.
Kao Kalia Yang's The Most Beautiful Thing is such a lovely story, that I don't think you need to be a child to appreciate its story. It's a story about a young girl in a Hmong refugee family. Her grandmother lives with her, and she spends a lot of quality time with her grandmother. As she grows older, she starts to notice how her family can't afford certain luxuries, and it frustrates her, but her grandmother gently reminds her to appreciate the beauty of her life.
What's really beautiful of this book is how it incorporates elements of a the family's Hmong culture, from the patterns drawn in the illustrations, references to Hmong folklore, and the every day interactions in the family (such as eating together, doing chores together). The story itself isn't about Hmong culture, but Yang weaves the culture into this simple family story and because of this, is really reflective of the immigrant experience.
