This one had me compulsively turning the pages. A twisty, twisted tale. Molloy grabs your attention from the beginning and weaves an unforgettable story. After enjoying her debut novel, I knew I wanted to read this one. She has moved her way on to my must read author list. Thank you to the publisher through Netgalley for an advanced copy. |
. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5 . Sam is a handsome psychotherapist that has recently moved back to his small hometown with his wife. Growing up in this town, Sam was the golden boy. Everyone loved him. . Unbeknownst to Sam, someone has been listening to every word spoken between himself and his patients through the vent at his new office space 👀 . One day, Sam goes to work and never returns home.... 👀 . _______________________________________ . This book contains some clever writing- there are some “Wait... whaaaat?!!” moments. I had to stop and reread some pages to wrap my mind around it. There was definitely some heart pounding going on! . You definitely don’t want to miss this one! Put it on your list! |
Newlyweds move to a new home in the husband's home town. This twisty tale of suspense kept me guessing right to the very end. |
Thank you to Harper and Netgalley for the ARC of this title to read prior to public distribution on October 13. Sam and Annie, newly married, decide to move back to his hometown so he can be close to his ailing mother. There he opens his counseling practice and attracted clients quickly. Unbeknownst to him, the conversations he has with this clients can be heard through a vent in an upstairs room. I was merrily led down the garden path with this story thinking I knew exactly what was going on. Until I didn’t. And I said to myself, “Wait, what did I just read?” and then I would reread the passage and wonder how I could have missed the clues. But maybe there weren’t any. Molloy knows how to capture her readers and give them a show they won’t soon forget. Then for a little more drama, she throws in some serious mystery as to the culprit's motivation. This is my kind of thriller – never boring – surprises left and right – and a decent ending to boot. |
If you are looking for a twisty suspense novel that will actually surprise you, look no further than Aimee Molloy's Goodnight Beautiful. Molloy, known for her previous book The Perfect Mother, manages to do what few authors can actually pull off in today's suspense genre - pull the wool over readers' eyes and let their assumptions take them where they may. Goodnight Beautiful's plot devices are clever and fresh, and when accompanied with Molloy's style of only giving readers enough information to let them THINK they know what's going on, it equates to a compelling tale spun in a deceiving little package. Goodnight Beautiful is a book best read blind, so if you are new to the novel, go ahead and read it first, and then come back to the reviews to see if everyone else was just as surprised as you. Goodnight Beautiful's focus is a newlywed psychologist, Sam, who moves back to his small hometown with his beautiful, alluring wife, Annie, and sets up practice in a downstairs office only to have his private, confidential conversations with clients listened to through a ceiling vent. The new psychologist is the talk of the town among women, and his client list grows and grows, with all of his therapy sessions noted, remembered, and spied upon. But what happens when one client - the French Girl - gets too close for comfort? There's a storm roaring into town, Sam has gone missing, and Annie is on a desperate search to find her elusive husband. Goodnight Beautiful is a fresh read that will have those in the literary community raving for months. The suspense style of this novel reminds me of Tarryn Fisher's The Wives, in which the author sets the reader up for one story and then pulls the rug out from underneath them about halfway through the book. This makes for a satisfying story, as admittedly, it is so hard to be truly surprised these days. Goodnight Beautiful is recommended to anyone who has been waiting for something cunning and innovative to come out of the over-saturated suspense market. Additionally, while many such books are written for women after the Gone Girl phenomenon, Goodnight Beautiful is a twisty read that can be enjoyed by both women and men. Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. |
You have to love an author who blasts books with unreliable narrators in a book with unreliable narrators. A psychologist and his new wife haved moved back to his home from the city. He rents space in an old home where Annie listens to his patients secretly through the air vents upstairs. He is keeping secrets and then goes missing during a storm and his wife is frantic. Then the book flips on a dime and becomes something much more sinister. A Stephen King book on steroids that plays mind games with you and you happily go along with it - brilliant. Fans of smart thriller with yes, unreliable narrators will enjoy this twisted tale. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy. |
Aimee Molloy delights and thrills again in this tense tale! I saw where another review described this as a "...a dark tale of desire, obsession, and deceit.." and I think that is a perfect synopsis of this wonderful story! A must read. |
Imagine Misery, with a twist. Sam and Annie are a professional couple who move to upstate NY, ready to leave the rat race of the city and settle into suburban life. Sam is a successful therapist who spends his days counseling troubled clients. Annie soon becomes interested in his clients and their visits to his home office. It's not long before her interest crosses the line from curiosity to obsession. A discovery is made in their home, which can allow anyone in the home to listen to Sam's sessions with his clients. It does not take long before hours are spent listening to Sam console the troubled and weary. But who is doing the listening? It all ends the day that Sam vanishes. After Sam disappears and police begin to investigate his life, questions arise. Could Annie have had something to do with his disappearance? Was Sam hiding something? Or, perhaps even more sinister.....was someone unknown stalking Sam? This was a decent novel with some twists that I definitely did not see coming. While I would recommend to readers, I can't say that this novel captured my attention entirely. The first three-quarters were strong, and, for me, it fizzled as it came to a close. Put on your list, but don't race to the library for this one. |
Twists upon twists. I had trouble putting this one down because the story always had you going down the wrong path and the twist would come and shock you. This came close to being a 5 star read for me, but the ending fell apart a little. For as twisty as the rest of the book was, the ending lost that dramatic reveal. |
I could NOT put this down! I loved how Molloy played with POVs here. Super twisty and a must-read for Stephen King fans. |
One of the Queens of Mystery/Thrillers. I could never guess how it would end and mon of the twists were what I expected. I actually went back to read some parts. If trust your gut was a novel this would definitely be the back story of what happened when you didn't. I'm looking forward to the next one! |
Goodnight Beautiful and Hello Whack-A-Do storyline........ Aimee Molloy knows her way around a high tension read that unfolds like cockleburs in your underwear. The more you squirm, the more you are aware of their presence. Just when you flick one aside, another more jagged one greets you. Gonna stick with you until the end with these characters who marinate in lies and deceptions. Chestnut Hill, New York seems to promise Annie and her husband, Dr. Sam Statler, a breakaway from the stress of living in New York City. Sam is a psychologist who worked in the children's psych ward at Bellevue Hospital. He hopes to open his own private practice in Chestnut Hill. They've purchased a home to be near Sam's mother who is in a nearby nursing home suffering from dementia. We'll come to find that Chestnut Hill is Sam's hometown. He had quite the reputation with the high school girls back in his day. His patient load is now filled with women who gravitate to this former heart throb. And we'll also come to find that someone is listening in on his patient sessions. This someone appears to not have good intentions where Sam is concerned.......especially after Sam goes missing. If you've read The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy, you know that the girl can write. This one travels some pretty dark roads in comparison. The plot deals with some toggle bolts that are loosening minute by minute. There's a smackin' twist that you won't see coming. You'll speak in mysterious tongues when you hit upon it. Seriously. Keep your eye out for this one. It's quite the diversion from riding on the Crazy Bus that we all find ourselves traveling on these days. I received a copy of Goodnight Beautiful through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Harper Collins Publishers and to Aimee Molloy for the opportunity. |
Okay, props to the author here for definitely surprising me with some of the narration. You tricked me! I didn’t love the story but I will say that if you like to be surprised with twists then this is for you. |

“You know the old saying: ‘When a man goes missing, it’s always the wife’” Sam and his wife Annie are recently married and move to his hometown from New York. He is a psychologist working out of a home. And he goes missing. That’s about all I can say without giving away key details. I am new to this author. I haven’t read her last book , A Perfect Mother, but as a fan of psychological thrillers, this was right up my alley. For me, it started off a bit slow. I didn’t really feel the need to tear through it. But it definitely set the stage for the rest of the book. About a third of the way through, I thought I had it figured out. Then about half way through, there’s a twist I didn’t see coming. I had to read that twist a couple times and scroll back a few pages just to double check myself. Then I flew through the rest. It was a quick read and constantly kept me guessing. The end, as some other reviewers mentioned, was just okay. It did feel a bit rushed and a little too “perfect”. It wasn’t a huge disappointment like some other (ahem Gone Girl) books. Without giving too much away, I’ll just leave it at that. With that said, I would recommend this book to others readers looking for a twisty psychological thriller. |

Carve out a block of time to read Goodnight Beautiful by Aimee Molloy because you won’t want to put It down! Initially, I thought the book began with narrative from Annie, only to find out that it wasn’t her at all. That was the first surprise in this tale of a psychologist, Sam, , his wife Annie, and a deeply disturbed individual who begins a series of events that lead Sam and Annie on a path they couldn’t have foreseen. |
Recommended by other galley chatters, Goodnight, Beautiful is well-written, suspenseful, and just a little unreliable in the narrative. I admit to staying up way too late reading this one. Will definitely recommend. |
I truly believe I had this book all figured out. I knew exactly what was going to happen, but then my thoughts were completly derailed. This psychological thriller will have you reading from the first page to the last as quickly as possible. I look forward to reading her previous book THE PERFECT MOTHER. |

Goodnight Beautiful was very interesting, although I found it a little confusing. It took me quite a while to figure out who was speaking. In the end, however, I enjoyed it. A great thriller! |
Part I tells about Sam and Annie who after a quick courtship get married and move from NYC to Sam's small hometown. They purchase a beautiful home and Sam begins a new therapy practice. Is their marriage as happy as it seems? Sam is stressed about his mother's dementia and money problems and Annie is feeling lonely and curious about Sam's mood shift.. This seems like the usual book about a husband and wife but once Part II begins, everything changes. This was an fun mystery book to read. |
