Another exciting installment in the Inferno Rising series! This one has a 'marriage of convenience' theme, with dragon King Ladon taking advantage of the presence of phoenix shifter Skylar to cement an alliance that will help him in his fight against his enemies. And since his main enemy happens to be the dragon who killer Skylar's parents - well, it's not exactly how she'd pictured revenge but an alliance with Ladon won't be all bad, considering their surprisingly lusty attraction to each other.
Action packed, great world building, sexy scenes and a fated mates romance combine to make a page turning read. I really enjoyed the first in this series, The Rogue King, and this one continues the main story arc but can be read as a standalone. Great escape read!

The Blood King begins directly where The Rogue King ended, when Skylar arrives in order to save her sister and Ladon, the blue dragon king, claims categorically she’s his. It’s the fastest claim I’ve ever read lol. Of course, the heroine being very distrustful about dragons in general and especially dragon kings, this claim doesn’t please her, but after discussion they finally agree: they’ll mate to block the path for the bad High King who’s been usurping the throne for centuries.

I had a tough time liking the heroine, especially at the beginning. She’s presented as a tough woman but I found her too self-confident, she doesn’t really listen to other people’s opinion, and is emotionally closed to everyone except her sisters. She also lump every dragons together with the High King while her father was a dragon too. She needs time to get off her high horse, but it was a little late for me. Beside that I liked her loyalty toward her sisters and her desire for revenge is understandable in spite of a strong tendency to rush headlong.

Ladon is at first a typical alpha hero who reveals quite appreciable nuances, like patience toward the heroine, and dedication to his people when to begin with he didn’t even desire the throne. His claim toward Skylar is motivated by the need to protect his people from the High King, but it’s quickly surpassed by the physical desire. Once done with the compulsory mating for political reason, Ladon really tries to convince Skylar their couple can work, while she wants to protect herself and is ready to flee one the problem with the High King is solved. By the way Ladon is the first to feel the connection between them, and he’s the most disturbed by his mate’s absence.

As for the plot, once done with the first chapters needed to install the couple, everything goes quite fast: political plots, attacks between dragons (if you like dragon shifters here we really see them in action), and a huge air battle scene really grabbing where everyone’s abilities are put through the mill. We also have some glimpses of the bad guy’s side, we see his twisted side, and a new character is presented without us knowing which side he’s on as his actions are contradictory.

Some points left me puzzled because they’re badly used or not at all. The sisters tell an allied dragon king that Kasia is the real phoenix but some time later Skylar uses her power on him without anyone raising the issue. The High King announces a plot with a false phoenix as bait qui early in the novel but we almost don’t hear about it after that – it will certainly be part of the sequel(s) but why talk about it so early then? And the last point that I felt was badly used is the fact Skylar is at a time almost sucked in a kind of void when she’s using her teleportation power link to her sister’s power. There’s a whole scene about her being saved by Ladon but nobody talks about it after that.

Anyway all in all I was less delighted by this second volume than with the first mainly because of the heroine’s antagonism, but I had a really good reading time all the same. The novel ends with an announcement about the sequel, concerning one of the two last sisters with a black dragon.

‘Dragons needed to fly, their souls craving the sky like the body needed the blood in its veins.’

The Blood King by Abigail Owen is the second book in the dragon shifter romance series, Inferno Rising. Whilst this series can be read as standalone’s we urge you to read this series in order as whilst each book is about a different couple, the crux of the storyline is one that continues. We love a good shifter romance and this series is why. Fabulously written with action, drama, mystery and heat, it feels like pure fantasy indulgence. The world-building throughout the books has been brilliant!

‘Kasia was the courageous one. Meira the brains. And Angelika the heart. But Skylar was the protector…With their mother gone, if she didn’t protect her sisters, who else would?’

What we know: in the beginning, 4 sisters were sent to different parts of the world by their phoenix mother who was dying in order to escape the evil High King. We won’t go into too much detail as the last thing we want to do is leave spoilers for you. However, each book is about a different sister and their fate in the grand fight against evil, with dragons on their side.

‘This phoenix, who was his mate, his queen, was quickly becoming his greatest weakness. And he didn’t give a fuck. Not so long as she was his.’

Skylar is a brilliant heroine. She stands her ground, does not give in easily when it comes to trust, loyalty and love. She’s feisty and heroic, self-sufficient and brave. She loves her sisters with an innate sense to protect them. This is where we find her in first pages of The Blood King where she infiltrates Ladon Ormarrs home in order to rescue her sister, Kasia whom she believes is being held against her will. What we especially loved about Skylar, is that she never rolled over and accepted a fate without questioning it, particularly when it came to mating the ruthless dragon king Ladon Ormarr. A dragon king is born and is stronger with a phoenix by his side as we saw in book one, The Rogue King, which was Brand and Kasia’s story, however, Skylar was absolutely not going to accept this fate without a fight of reason, logic and planning the inevitable.

“So…you believe in me, but you don’t want to let me close.”
“People can only hurt you if you let them close enough to do it.”
“Who has ever been close enough to you to hurt you?”

Ladon is fighting to keep his throne out of the clutches of the High King and his allies. War is coming but just who is an ally and who is a foe? Lies, deception and a witch’s potent magic all adds to the intrigue and the ultimate battle yet to come. We fell in love with Ladon and his no-nonsense ways. He wears his heart on his sleeve and whilst he’s a brutal and ruthless dragon shifter he truly does not shy away for revealing how he feels about Skylar.

‘With Ladon was where she was supposed to be, where she was her strongest, her most powerful, even though it also put her at her most vulnerable.’

We loved the drama, the banter between Skylar and Ladon as well as the well-placed romance which never overpowered the storyline. Whilst we’ve loved the first two books in the Inferno Rising series we have a feeling the third book, The Warrior King, will have a bit more angst, grit and excitement and we personally cannot wait! Just what is it about these shifter romances that have our hearts beating out of our chests? We bloody love them!

This is the second book in this series but in my opinion can be read as a standalone .

What do you get when a rare "phoenix" ( who hates Dragons woth a passion ) meets a Dragon King ......... they go up in flames literally !

Skylar , one of phoenix quads , has traced her missing sister to the fortress of Dragon King Ladon Ormarr ...... there is just one problem ....... her sister is not being held prisoner , but is in fact in love and mated to a Dragon King , Brand .
Landon realises that she is just what he needs to take the the fight against the High King (the Rotten King) and convinces her that mating with him , it will save not just the Dragons but bring peace to the land .
During a battle Skylar is kidnapped by the High King ................ will she survive his efforts to drain her energy to bring back his immortality ?
The story of the Dragon's battles against the High King and of how Landon gets his Phoenix back makes for an entertaining read , with characters that draw you in .
I look forward to reading about the other two sisters in future books .

I was given an arc of the book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

Skylar and Ladon are two very strong characters. Their relationship is built up well. Story is steady paced with lots of action. See characters again from the first book. Can't wait for the next book!

Book 2 in Inferno Rising, The Blood King is an action driven read. I really enjoyed this story, the characters interaction and the dynamics of the story had me engaged throughout. I will be recommending and looking to read more.

I truly love this universe and what an imagination Abigail Owen must contain to come up with these wonderfully horrifying characters and creatures that consume it.

This romance starts with Skylar bursts into Ladon Orrmarr’s mountain to save her sister Kasia from herself and the horrible dragon shifter Brand that Skylar thinks that Kasia was forced to mate.
Ladon lays a claim on Skylar the second Phoenix and somehow convinces her to mate him even though she hates dragon shifters.
It is his only chance to even have a chance to win the war against the High King (the Rotting King) and get the peace the dragon shifters long for.
Now they have to go to war against the golden clan to win Brand back his throne, but what happens when Skylar is kidnapped in the middle of a dragon fight and how will Ladon get back his queen before anything happens to any of them?

The story is very intriguing and you just get sucked into the world and into a war between dragons of different colors and sizes. It is very bloody but beautiful too and you sit on the edge of your seat every time there is a fight. You get to care for the characters and you don’t want to see them get hurt or die.

The only thing that made me deduct a star was Skylar and her persistence to defy Ladon and her feelings for him! She was too stubborn and annoying when it came to him but also in thinking that she knew better when it came to everything. But on the other hand I also liked that she was willful and not afraid to through herself into an unknown adventure.
I loved Ladon just as much as I did in the first book “The Rouge King” and I can’t fault him for anything he did for her but also for his people.

I can’t believe that I have to wait a whole year for Meira and Samael’s romance and story and how the war will unfold because that Rotting King is a mean one.

I can definitely recommend this book.

Ladon is a dragon king trying to hold onto his throne. Skylar is the protector of her sisters. She meets Ladon and the sparks between them are electric and all consuming. Ladon knows that Skylar is his mate but she has no intention of hanging around his kingdom. She doesn't believe in the fated mates thing. Skylar is independent and offends the people of the court and has no fear of Ladon. Skylar disappears during a battle and Ladon will do anything to get her back. A great read and series.

I received a copy of this book and am leaving a review.

I loved everything about this book! Skylar and Ladon are wonderful characters who complement each other well. They immediately push each other’s buttons from the first meet and their chemistry is smoking hot. Ladon is trying to do what is right for his people and having a phoenix of his own is definitely a perk. When he outright claims Skyler upon meeting her though, not the best way to go and she has no qualms putting him in his place about it either. I love the constant sparks that fly between these two. Skylar will not be put under anyone’s thumb; she’s strong minded, smart, skilled, tough as nails, fights for what’s right regardless of the outcome, and is extremely protective of her sisters. She wants nothing to do with Ladon, his people, or his war with the exception of grabbing her sister (whom she figures is under duress for being mated to one of the dragon kings and needs help) and get out of there. And of course, everything explodes from there!

This book is terrific from the start! It is full of excitement, danger, suspense, action, and moves at a great pace with several twists and turns. The character development is wonderful and the interactions of all the characters are engaging, as well as the romance between Ladon and Skyler fitting for them. I am really enjoying this series and look forward to the next sister’s story.

I'm just gonna dive right into this review because I need to get my thoughts out there for you guys. We met Ladon in the first book when his friend brings him a phoenix to mate. Phoenixes basically are the symbol of great power and pretty much declare you ruler of all. However, when he noticed how attached the phoenix was to his friend and visa verse, he backed off and stood down as the future high king. However, when Skylar comes bombarding into his home, teleporting people all over the place with her powers in an attempt to save her sister from these cruel dragons that clearly have her captive (not!), he is immediately smitten. Most people fear him and take him seriously, and yet here's this little thing using her power to teleport him to the next room without so much as a hello. Needless to say, he sets his sights on her and decides to make her mine. The only problem is, Skylar is a fighter and she isn't going to go down without one heck of a fight.

I have to admit, I didn't really like how it seemed like any phoenix would do for Ladon. I know that he is immediately taken with her, but his remarks of finding one of her other sisters to mate if she didn't agree to mate with him just sort of rubbed me the wrong way. I know it was in order to get under skin, but guess what... it got under mine, too. Since Skylar is sort of the protector among her sisters, she's not an easy one to win over. She is always looking at things from every angle and always coming up with a way to escape and keep her sisters safe. So when Ladon starts to prove that he's a guy she can trust and isn't just out for a phoenix to gain him power, she starts to lighten up around him. However, she's still always aware of her sisters and always ready to fight to the death for them.

These two characters are strong players. Like I said before, Skylar is the protector among her sisters, Ladon is king of his people in order to keep them all safe. Both will do whatever it takes to keep those they love safe. So needless to say, they were perfect for each other. They are both stubborn and will do whatever it takes to keep people safe. Even if that means teleporting into the sky to fall into enemy dragons and teleport them out of the fight as you plummet towards earth, only to teleport back up into the sky and do it all over again. To say that Skylar was insane when it came to fighting would be an understatement. That girl doesn't seem to have any fear.

A lot of new developments happen in this book. We meet the other two sisters. One was living with wolf shifters and other with gargoyles. One sister seemed to have some pretty cool powers while the other one doesn't exhibit any at all. Not to mention the ending to this novel that has to do with one of the sisters being mated to a dragon... the WRONG dragon. Gah! That ending slayed me. I can't believe I have to wait months for Meirda's story. I mean, the girl was living with gargoyles. That right there is interesting enough, but yeah. I'm just going to stop there because I don't want to give anything away, but I will be impatiently waiting for the next book to come out.

So yeah, to wrap up this jumbled mess of thoughts, if you are in the mood for a shifter romance, especially one with dragons, pick up this series. I mean, where else are you going to get dragons, phoenixes, werewolves, hell hounds, gargoyles, and who knows what else.

The Blood King is the second book in Abigail Owen’s inferno Rising and it definitely cranks up the heat. A story packed with action, sexual tension and the wonderful world of the paranormal; there is so much to love. Ms Owen has again provided her readers with something to sink their teeth into and an intriguing addition to this exciting series. I’m looking forward to the next riveting tale.

The Blood King is a perfect example of one of my favorite romance tropes: enemies to lovers. The fact this story is also full of paranormal shifters, specifically dragons, makes it even better.

Skylar Amon is one of a quadruplet of phoenixes, a rare occurrence since there's only supposed to one phoenix at at time. Hidden from the Rotting King of the Red Dragon Clan and each other, Skylar has finally located one of her sisters, Kasia. Skylar manages a stealthy entrance to the Blue Dragon lair only to find her sister is mated to a Gold Dragon. Dragons are supposed to be their enemy. Rescuing Kasia takes an unexpected turn when Kasia doesn't to be rescued and Kasia's mate, Brand, heartily agrees. Kasia and Brand are such a cute couple and the author makes their love and affection shine from the pages. The relationship does not impress Skylar and she's even less impressed with the feelings she's starting to have for Ladon Ormarr, king of the Blue Dragons, also known as The Blood King.

Ladon doesn't understand his attraction to Skylar. It goes long beyond just needing to secure her as a mate because she's a phoenix. Skylar is stubborn and doesn't want to be claimed or chained to a mate who only wants her for who she is and the powers she has. She's willing to take one for the team, however, if it means putting the Rotting King down permanently. As the war between the various dragon clans heat up, so does the chemistry between Skylar and Ladon. When everything is all said and done, Skylar may not be able to just up and walk away from the one man who burns her from the inside out and fires her up like no one else.

Amazing, this book is simply amazing. I read the book in under 2 days and I have a full-time job and a family. Oops, sorry guys, didn't mean to neglect you. The chemistry between Skylar and Ladon is off-the-charts hot, from the minute Skylar stepped out of hiding and through all the stubbornness, suspense, and drama this paranormal romance brings to the table.

I love the author's writing style, conversational and easy to follow. The pacing of the story is perfect, not too fast, not too slow. There aren't any boring or dull spots, as the author created 3-dimensional characters and a 3-dimensional world. I was engrossed in this book from the very beginning and was drawn in by the action, romance, snark, and strength of both Skylar and Ladon. Abigail Owen is now one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to dive into more of her books.

Yes, I was provided a copy of this book to review but my thoughts, opinions, and praise are my own.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ out of 5
Abigail Owen really knows how to hook you into a book! This couple was teased at the end of the last book and then she has teased the next couple and I need the next book NOW!

Our heroine is an infamous Phoenix, who are sought after by Dragon Kings because the King you mates the Phoenix becomes the High King. Our heroine has been on the run her entire life from dragons until she goes to save her sister from their clutches only to find that all dragons might not be as evil as she thought.

The heroine is brash, confident and does what she wants and she meets her perfect match in the hero who appreciates those qualities in her. This book has an element of one of my favourite tropes- what I’m going to call mating of convenience 😂. This book not only has an awesome romance but is steeped in amazing paranormal world building that will keep you completely hooked and wanting more.

Landon Ormarr is the King of the blue dragons. Known to many as the Blood King. There is a terrible war between some of the dragon clans all because of a deranged old dragon that has held onto the title of High King for far too long. He rules through fear and with the help of his witch lover.
Skylar Amon is a phoenix. There is only ever supposed to be one in existence at a time, but she has three sisters. They all got sent into hiding by their mother as she died. Skylar is about to rescue one of the others. She hopes.
This is a very exciting paranormal romance that is the second in a series that should be read in order. The magical battles are incredible. Fabulous characters that will have you on the edge of your seat all the way through. Once you start you won't be able to put it down. Then our sneaky author gives us a little tease to make sure we can't wait for the next book.
Very exciting.

Book two in the Inferno Rising series knocked it out of the park and did not disappoint! Heck, I even like it better than The Rogue King, which I gave 4.5 hearts!

In The Blood King, we are introduced to the eldest Amon sister, Skylar, who is hell-bent on rescuing her sister, Kasia, from the clutches of the Dragon King, who is now her mate. Unfortunately for her, she attracts the notice of the Blood King, Ladon. In a series of unfortunate events, Skylar has no choice but to agree to a mate with Ladon.

The Blood King is a very fast-paced book. Most of the action happens during the first half of the book, which kept me on the edge of my seat. I love the slow relationship development between Skylar and Ladon, although the sexytimes happen early on in the book. I love that the mating bond didn’t happen until later on, where we were getting more relationship development between the two strong main characters. The sparks between the two are amazing and the banter is really top-notch!

What really blew me away, though was the last third of the book! We get a few creepy scenes involving the big baddie and a few close calls! Also, there are even more secrets revealed here and we also meet the rest of the sisters!

The Blood King also ends in a sort-of cliffhanger, where we are introduced to the couple in the next book AND another twist in the story!

I can’t wait to read the next book The Warrior King!

OMG....Addictive....that is the best word to describe this series. The Inferno Rising series is an extension of the Fires Edge series. I have to say the series gets better and better with each book.

In this second book in the series, Skylor Amon is on a mission to save her sister. But what she doesn’t realize is that her sister is mated to a gold dragon. Her rescue mission is a bust. A bust that puts her in a very dangerous position.

Landon Omarr has taken the blue throne when he overthrew Thanatos. He has been working diligently to over throw the other Kong’s a take down the Rotting King. He helped his friend Brand take his rightful place as King of the Gold Dragons. He believes Brand is the High King since he mated a Phoenix. That is until she walked in the door. Never has there been more than one Phoenix....and this will change the events in play. But when she enters the room to save her sister, one word comes to mind. “Mine”. And so begins a whole new set of troubles.

This series is addictive. Starting with the Fires Edge and the dragon firefighters and moving into a story of four Phoenixes, the books dive deeper into the dragon world. With a unique storyline these books are easily going to be you next favorite read. Each book more in-depth than the last, with strong fierce characters. These books are full of love, loyalty, fight and heroism like you haven’t seen before.

Abigail Owen has created a unique world full of amazing characters and great stories that have your imagination running on high. There are paranormal characters mixed in with our dragon friends and the adrenaline is edge of the seat good and explosive. I think once you start you will become obsessed. So pick these up today.

The Blood King by Abigail Owen

2nd book in the Inferno Rising series. Fantasy dragon shifter romantic suspense. Should be read in series order.

A lot of pieces. A complex layering of strategies. Gamesmanship. Chess is used as a layering piece by the author and characters to strategize.
Unfortunately it’s winning at a level where treachery is high and power is the ultimate gamble.
Red, Gold, Blue, Green, Black and White dragon clans fight for domination hoping one of the Phoenix sisters will be able to create a higher power.
Skylar and Ladon are the main Phoenix and dragon to mate and fall in love in the book in the series. The couple from the previous book play key roles and we finally get to meet the other two sisters.
A cliffhanger for the series but these two lovers are mates and set as King and Queen of their dragon clan.

Engrossing and complex power struggles. Romantic potential sacrifices that remain unneeded. The evil dragon remains ....until the next book and match.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

The second book in the Inferno Rising series is about Skylar and Ladon. If you’ve read Rogue King you were left with a killer cliffy that introduced Skylar. She gave off a warrior vibe and I was all over her girl power vibes! Throw in the fact that Ladon was a yummy but slightly rigid MC and I was shipping them hard and the wait for book two was torture!

Luckily this picks up immediately after that intense ending and it’s everything that I wanted it to be! We meet new characters (that I’m already anxious to see who they end up with!), more details about the other phoenix sisters! And the plot keeps on thickening with the evil baddie and his minions.

What I loved:
This story was fast paced, entertaining and gave me the perfect balance of romance, heat and humor. This author has seriously become an auto buy for me because the world and characters she’s created grab your attention from start to finish. When you love characters so much and you know you’re going to revisit them again, it’s no brainer that I have to own my paperback copy to add to my collection :) Kasia and Brand were first and now Sky and Ladon have joined the ranks.

Sky and Ladon were definitely distrustful of each other in the beginning but for the greater good, they agree to team up. Of course, Sky doesn’t see it as black and white as that and seeing her fall for her guy – someone one the complete opposite of her own balls to the wall personality – was the best! I would definitely say it was insta-lust but slow burn in the romance department.

I liked Ladon since meeting him in book one, I knew there was more than the strict, cut and dry leader he portrayed and I loved that I was right! Although it starts off as a mating of convenience, I loved that he was the first to admit his deeper feelings for Sky and how he pursued her with all he had. An alpha dragon with an all or nothing attitude melts me every time.

Would I recommend?
100% highly recommend this series. If you love romantic paranormals, dragons, strong family ties and action packed reads, this series is a must read! Can be read as a stand alone but would suggest reading the books in order to fully understand all the characters and plot line.

Books like this are the reason I love to read. There are some authors who are so adept at worldbuilding that opening their books and beginning to read transports you (back) into this magical place they have created. A world that sparks your imagination and allows you to see and feel the book come alive as you devour the pages. This author, with the Inferno Rising and Fire’s Edge series’, has created a world like this. A world where dragons (and bears and wolves) are real. Where they live and work alongside humans without us ever knowing, unless we are destined to become important to them. Where something as enchanting as mythical as a Phoenix can hide in plain sight, never revealing themselves for fear of losing their freedom or worse, their life. Where the strings of Fate wind between so many lives and bring surprises at every turn.

Ladon is a King who took his throne in blood. He fought someone he considered a friend for most of his life until he learned of his soul deep, life-altering betrayal. He struggles every day to be the man he knows his clan needs him to be. He had hoped to mate The Phoenix and use her legend and legendary powers to destroy the corrupt and insane High King, but that didn’t quite go according to plan! Now, amazingly, he has somehow been given a second chance when Fate delivers to him a Second Phoenix and he is determined that this one will be his. Forever.

Skylar is a woman who has spent her life hiding everything she is. From the human world even as she lived within it, and especially from dragons. When she learns that her sister has been mated to a dragon, she cannot stand by and watch her be used by the creatures she has been taught to fear their whole lives. So being the impetuous, risk-taking, go-getter she’s knows for, she sneaks into the Blue Dragon stronghold to rescue her sister and reveals that there is more than one Phoenix! And even though she uses her brash, no-holds barred, snarky personality that usually keeps everyone at a safe distance, she ends up becoming a part of the dragon’s fight against the High King – mostly because he killed her parents!

Ladon needs to defeat the High King and his minions in the other dragon Clans in order to keep himself, his clan and the people he cares about safe. Skylar needs to protect herself and her sister from the machinations of the High King and avenge her parent’s murders. Fate has brought these two together so they can achieve their goals but she also knows that they are stronger together than they ever would be apart.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book through Netgalley and Entangled Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
