(3.5/5) This was a fun take on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Lizzie Bennett works in her father's law office and decides she wants to represent Mr. Bingley who has been wrongfully accused of murdering his brother-in-law. Against her father's wishes, she does her own investigation of the case discovering clues and discovering Mr. Darcy. While the story is completely different from the original story (other than Mrs. Bennett wanting Lizzie to marry Mr. Collins), it was quite entertaining.

Thank you to Harper Audio and NetGalley for the review copy.

I received an advanced digital copy produced by HarperCollins Canada from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have always loved the original Pride and Prejudice but I also adore different renditions of the story. This murder mystery was an amazing rendition, taking us through the story of a headstrong woman who has a point to prove.
I adore the character changes that the author made from the original novel, especially Lizzie.
I look forward to seeing more from this author and continuing the Jane Austen Murder Mystery series.
PS. I was stunned by who the killer was, but thought it very fitting for the story.

What a fun twist on an Austen classic! Fans of Pride and Prejudice and other versions of the classic will love falling into this world. In this fun retelling Mr. Bennett is now a lawyer, and Elizabeth desires nothing more than to work with her father on hic cases. In order to prove herself worthy, Lizzie decides to investigate a recent murder in high society, with the chief suspect being Mr. Bingley. Lizzie strives to figure out the truth of the murder and in doing so prove Bingley's innocence and her own talent in detective work. Many obstacles in her path, none as aggravating or attractive as Mr. Darcy, friend of Bingley's, and employee at another law firm.

This book turns the story of Pride and Prejudice on its head, but still keeps many of the wittiest moment. However, changes them and portrays them in a different and unique late. Overall this was a fun read and great for fans of Austen, historical dramas, and detective mysteries.

Happy Pub Day to Pride & Premeditation by Tirzah Price!

Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite books and is the ultimate enemies-to-lovers story.

Pride & Premeditation takes that beloved story and dials it to 11 with all the things you wish could have happened in the original story.

- Smart, logical Elizabeth (Lizzie) finally applying her knowledge to an occupation ☑️
- A high speed carriage chase followed by a standoff where Darcy really gets to be the hero ☑️
- Three villians we love to hate and that finally succumb to true justice ☑️
- A Legally Blonde-esque ending with Lizzie being a badass in court ☑️
- A unique "proposal" ☑️

This was such a fun retelling of Pride & Prejudice. I found myself saying multiple times "Yes, Lizzie, yes!!" She's figuring out this case on her own and Darcy helps but doesn't overtake. I also found myself thinking that this book really let's you finally get justice for the characters you despise in the original story (*cough*Collins*cough*). So multiple times I also may have shouted "JUSTICE" and gotten weird looks from the dog. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I listened to this one on audio and since it wasn't the final audio version it was just one voice with one inflection so it was hard sometimes to tell the difference in characters but I'm sure the final version will be fantastic. Somehow I found myself missing a whiny voiced Mrs. Bennett. So weird to hear her with a nice voice. 😐

If you're looking for a fun retelling of a classic story pick this one up! It's out today!

Thanks to NetGalley, Harper Audio and Harper Collins for the advanced audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I read this back in January and expected it to be one of the books that helped me get back into my book blog. What I've come to learn is that I just don't have enough time in life for my hobbies, which is unfortunate because this book deserves all the space.

Thank you to Netgalley and HarperAudio for an advance copy of this book in audiobook proofs, in exchange for an honest review.

First off, happy book day! I had assumed this book was already out, but it is quite perfect that I am writing this on the day it is out in the world! If you are someone who loves Pride and Prejudice adaptations, I would suggest adding this one to your list. Elizabeth and Darcy work for competing law firms - neither of which are exactly lawyers (because Elizabeth can't be), but both are looking to solve the most recent murder for...well, different reasons. Darcy is looking to get his best friend off as there is no way Charles Bingley is a murderer, while Elizabeth is hoping that by solving the case, she can take up a more serious position in her father's law firm.

What I enjoyed about this book is that it doesn't feel like someone took a woman from the 2020s and dropped her into P&P time. Elizabeth feels like a product of her day, and the murder feels of the time as well. I also love when P&P adaptations keep my favorite line (which essentially boils down to "if you don't marry him your mother will never speak to you again and if you do, I won't ever speak to you again" because chef kiss Elizabeth's dad is the OG good dad.)

I look forward to continuing this series (especially looking forward to Northanger Abbey as I always am looking for more adaptations of it) and seeing what other mysteries pop up!

This YA murder mystery twist on Pride and Prejudice was such a fun read! It was great to read the reimagined versions of these characters with some modern sensibilities and while the mystery is definitely the main focus, there’s a hint of a sweet romance there, too. If you’re a stickler for historical accuracy, though, be aware that the author does acknowledge that she took liberties with what would have been allowed during the regency era for the sake of the story. I really enjoyed this one and am hoping for more in the series! Thanks to NetGalley and HarperTeen for the advanced copy.

An unexpectedly brilliant murder mystery twist on the classic Pride and Prejudice, Pride and Premeditation is a really fantastic book.

I loved Elizabeth, and found her a refreshingly funny narrator. Although the plot is obviously a very familiar one, there was enough added here to keep me guessing - whilst at the same time getting excited when characters I recognised appeared, eager to see what role they were now cast in.

Pride and Premeditation was a thoroughly enjoyable book, and I sincerely hope that there are more to come in the same style!

I received this and as an audio galley to listen to for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for giving me access.

This has to be my favorite Pride and Prejudice retelling ever! I love me a good mystery, let alone one set in this time period.

While we have all out typical P&P characters, their storyline is a bit different, but you still know how they relate to the original. Price did an amazing job at capturing Austen's voice in these characters and creating a voice of her own. I already am dying for book two.

Pride and Premeditation is a great new take on the famous Jane Austen novel. In this series the Bennets and the Darcys own law firms in London. Collins is still Mr Bennet's heir and a solicitor at Longbourn & Sons but plays a larger roll in this story than the original. Wickham used to work at Pemberley & Associates. Lizzie wants to become a solicitor but women are not "allowed". Bingley has been accused of his brother-in-laws murder and Lizzie plans to prove his innocence.
So often the rewrites of Austen books are takes of setting them in a different culture but this one uses the original characters (with some of the same conversations) but giving them a different environment and situation. This is a great mix of classic and mystery. I definitely suggest if you love either genre.

This book was exactly what I was hoping for. I can definitely see how it compares to The Lady Janies series. However, it was lacking the humorous moments that I love about that series.

Well, that was delightful!

My daughter knows that] I'm a fan of murder mysteries and Austen [, and sent me this book. Wow am I glad she did. It is SO FUN!!

I don't want to spoil anything so I won't give you specifics, but things you wish had happened in P&P happen here. It's extremely satisfying.

Lizzie is working unofficially at her father's barrister company. (If you don't know the difference between barristers and solicitors, the book explains it. Barristers are the lawyers in court.) She has a good eye for detail and helps him with contracts. But she wants him to hire her and train her as a barrister. Her mother wants her to marry Mr. Collins, the heir to her father's company.

As expected, he's odious. He also takes credit for her achievements.

Enter Mr. Bingley, accused of stabbing Mr. Hurst. Lizzie seizes the opportunity to show her father that she can work a case and prove Mr. Bingley's innocence.

In the course of doing so we encounter most of the P&P characters. As Lizzie criss-crosses London in pursuit of justice, she gains a better understanding of what she wants and what she is capable of.

This is a fun cozy mystery, made all the better by being helmed by a favourite character. I eagerly await the next installment.

How can I review an audiobook when given a text-to-speech voice instead of a real narrator?
That's some kind of joke.

Sixteen-year-old Lizzie Bennet has one aspiration in life - to become a barrister. However, achieving this feat in nineteenth century London is not an easy task. Determined to prove herself to her father, as well as to clear the name of a man falsely accused of murder, Lizzie begins her own investigation into the case.

It has been quite a while since I have read Jane Austin, but I get the feeling this book is written much in the same style. It is heavy on the narration and descriptions, along with continually pointing out issues with societal norms.

While it took a while to get into the story, I did find it interesting. I enjoyed watching Lizzie grow, although I did find it a little frustrating that she was constantly explaining what she was doing wrong with her own investigation. Information occasionally felt repeated and overanalyzed. However, I found myself curious enough about the mystery to continue reading and was satisfied with the ending.

Such a creative reimagining of the Jane Austen classic, Pride and Prejudice. The comparisons to the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper are spot on and I loved this version of Lizzie and Darcy, as well as all of the twists and turns of the whodunnit. I would have liked a little more romance, but overall still found this a very satisfying read. Looking forward to reading more from this series.

Regarding the narration, I'm not really a fan of the synthetic narrators on the galleys, but I think this will be fantastic to listen to once it has real narrators so that it's easier to distinguish between the different characters.

Pride and Premeditation is a reimagining of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice that places the Bennets, Bingleys, and Darcys in the middle of a murder investigation. Lizzie Bennet longs to become a barrister like her father, but she must first prove to him that she has what it takes. She gets her chance when she learns that Charles Bingley has been accused of murdering his brother-in-law. When she sneaks in to visit with him at the jail, she gains his confidence and permission to investigate on his behalf. She’ll solve this crime and prove his innocence in no time—but she’ll have to work around his friend and official representation—the infamous Mr. Darcy.

I absolutely adore Pride and Prejudice retellings and I found this to be a fresh take on the story. This version veers from the original plot line just enough to keep the reader guessing, but maintains the spirit of the characters. The women in this novel are a bit more self-aware and the romance is not the main plot driver. I would recommend this to murder mystery lovers, those who like period pieces, and Janeites alike. I switched between the book and audiobook and found that I preferred the story read aloud. It reminded me of listening to radio theater because of the mystery aspect, and the narrator's accent helped set the scene and made it more immersive.

This was soooo good! I’m immediately preordering the B&N special edition (that’s how you know). It was just so much fun and I found myself smiling constantly throughout. I love the way our favorite cast of characters were incorporated. It felt true to the original story, while also being a different twist. I love how strong-willed and smart Lizzie is. I love the father/ daughter relationship. The only thing I wish is that we got more Darcy/ Lizzie scenes because the ones we did get were great and I want more! BRB gonna go watch the Keira Knightly adaptation to get my Darcy fix.

As a big fan of the original Pride and Prejudice I was nervous going into this book. I was scared that it would ruin and not live up to the original but I was wrong. Pride and Premeditation did not disappoint. I found this take to be very interesting and such a cool spin to the original. It was something that I didn't know I needed. The author did a great job of sticking to the initial plot but also changing it in a way that fit the story line best. I will definitely be recommending this book to anyone who loves Pride and Prejudice.

Pride and Prejudice meets cozy mystery? Sign me up!

I guess I should start with the disclaimer that I love watching and reading new takes on Pride and Prejudice. Honestly, retellings have done nothing but strengthen my love for the P&P characters so when I saw the opportunity to listen to a voice galley copy of a mystery based retelling, I jumped at it.

In this twist we see Lizzie chasing her dream of becoming a lawyer for her father’s firm. When she catches wind that Mr. Bingley has been arrested for the murder of his brother-in-law, Lizzie knows that this is her chance to prove her professional worth to her father and society as whole. Lizzie will face many challenges in trying to prove Bingley’s innocence including the constant push back from his best friend and lawyer, Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Obviously, since I didn’t listen to what would actually be the audio for an audiobook version of this title, I can’t say if the narration will be good or bad. I do think that the author’s writing could only benefit from a more natural voice as it is really well written, just broken due to the voice galley narration style. Price does take liberties of what would and would not be possible at the time that the story takes place in but I’m completely okay with that since it makes the story more complete. I do wish there was a little more interaction with our main characters though. I love characters like Bingley, Jane, and Lydia (poor Lydia is always so dislikable) but I felt like they were missing in most of the interactions.

I was so excited to read this spin on Pride & Prejudice, because I don't consider myself an Austen purist and I enjoy retellings immensely when they are done well. This one was definitely done well - it was so fun! I wanted a tiny tiny tiny smidge more romance as in the original, but I completely respect that this genre was all on its own :) It was intriguing to listen to and find out what happened to Mr. Hurst. Well done!!! A great YA spin on this classic and very well narrated.

Story Notes

Tirzah Price takes readers back to Merryton, Longbourne and Pemberly to solve a mystery that involves some of literature's best loved characters.

Who doesn't love a good reworking of a classic story - especially when it's done well? I loved this creative reworking of P&P, giving it a mystery bent and it's characters a different façade. As this was an audiobook, I was able to listen while traveling and working in my garden and it made those times much more enjoyable. Lizzie Bennet is the daughter of Mr. Bennet, barrister and owner of Longbourne and Sons, at law. She longs to become a qualified barrister herself and work in the law as it fascinates and challenges her. But, as a woman, she has no chance without the backing of her father and other such law persons. He gives her a chance to prove her dedication by finding and solving a case without his help, and she sets off to find her challenge. Lizzie never expected to find herself in the middle of a murder case but that's just what she finds. While she is not qualified or experienced enough to know everything she needs to do, Lizzie quickly deduces the paths she must take. But untwisting this complicated web of lies, deceit and money grubbing will test her meddle and throw her in the path of Fitzwilliam Darcy. An up-and coming barrister, himself, Darcy is determined to prove his best friend Charles Bingley innocent of murder. He will find his way somewhat impeded with the surprising appearance of Lizze Bennet and while he finds her attractive, he cannot let her distract him or stop his progress. Each of them will find that working together is the only way to properly proceed if the one's responsible are to be caught. Now if they can only stay alive long enough to prove their discoveries are true. I loved that careful crafting of this story into a believable telling. We saw the distinct characteristics of all the characters from Jane Austen's original story but they were given some additional ones that served to increase my love of this story. Ms. Price took all the assumed vices of the characters we love to despise and made them even more despicable. And the main characters were given some much more fun voices and snarky conversations that I laughed aloud at more than once. I won't give spoilers for this delightful story but will say that I will certainly be recommending it to others in the hope that they will enjoy it as I did.

I received this Audiobook from Harper Audio via NetGalley in order to provide a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
