It is a truth universally acknowledged that I will probably fall in love with Pride and Prejudice no matter what form it takes. Pride and Premeditation did not disappoint! It’s the first in a trilogy (although I wouldn’t say no to more), and a brilliant start. Pride and Premeditation reimagines Lizzie as a barrister’s daughter, dreaming of becoming a lawyer herself. Mr. Darcy is a solicitor at his father’s firm and eager to prove himself. The two butt heads over different theories and ideas when Mr. Bingley becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Mr. Darcy is hired as his lawyer, while Lizzie tries to get involved to solve the case!
First of all, you should know that this takes place in the same time period as the original. It’s probably obvious. But I didn’t know…. I was very confused during that first chapter.
The other thing you should be aware of is that while Pride and Premeditation pays homage to the original and the characters are pretty much the same, Pride and Premeditation deviates A LOT. Kitty, Lydia, and Mary maybe have a line each. Jane pops up when convenient, and doesn’t even meet Bingley until the end. Mr. Collins is around more than anyone wants… You get it. We mainly see a lot of Lizzy running around trying to solve the murder, and you know, being prejudiced. Mr. Darcy isn’t even really present the first half of the book. My one complaint about the book, really, is that I would have preferred more of the original plot with the murder intermixed.
I really liked that I had no idea who was the real murderer until the end. While I suspected that character, I never knew for sure, I never knew why, and I had no idea how it all came together. That was perfect! I was guessing until the end.
Also, I loved how the characters were reimagined. Everybody got their new role, but kept their same personalities and that seemed really well done.

The novel Pride and Premeditation is loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. In this version, Elizabeth Bennett and her family live in Regency-era London. Her father is a Barrister and the owner of the firm Longbourne and Sons. Mr. Collins is a Solicitor who works at Longbourne and Sons and is Mr. Bennett’s heir. Elizabeth wants to work at her father’s firm but first, she must solve a case to prove to Mr. Bennett that she is capable of working in a man’s profession. Elizabeth stumbles upon a murder mystery that involves the Bingleys, and she meets the arrogant Mr. Darcy. This story itself is quite good and entertaining. It was a fast-paced read and the writing is excellent.

I love a good retelling of a classic as much as the next person, but this one fell flat because of the comparison to P&P. The author took many liberties, and the characters here have very little resemblance to Ms. Austen’s beloved characters. Elizabeth Bennett is one of the most famous characters in literature, but I could scarcely stand her the first half of this novel. Ms. Price’s Elizabeth Bennett was pushy and rude, and her behavior was abhorrent in the way she belittled others and she snuck around searching for clues. The issue I personally have with this story is the comparison to Pride and Prejudice. The Bennett family itself was barely in this story with the sisters and mother hardly making a peep, although Mr. Bennett has a stronger role in this novel, which I will admit was a nice change. Wickham and Catherine de Burgh also appear, but Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner have been left out. There are also a few scenes that include a clever Georgiana Darcy.

If you are expecting an epic love story between your favorite P&P characters you should probably put this book away. There is no courtship between Jane and Bingley and the “romance” between Elizabeth and Darcy leaves much to be desired. This novel would have been better if it was just a murder mystery set in Regency London. The author didn’t really need to “borrow” the names of Jane Austen’s characters. I liked Ms. Price's writing so I'll be watching to see what other stories she writes, but I'll steer clear of any more of her retellings. Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really fun adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I thought the characters stayed true to their originals even though the plot was different. This would appeal to mystery readers in general, not just P&P fans.

4.5 stars = I loved it! Would re-read.

I'm not really an Austen fan. I've never gotten into the books even though I have tried, and the only movie I like is Sense and Sensibility. But I was intrigued by the idea of a retelling that was a mystery, so I gave this a try. And I loved it. The major characters from Pride and Prejudice are present, but there are some twists and shifts that I loved. The mystery was great. I can't wait to read more from this series!

Pride and Premeditation is a Jane Austen retelling with a murder mystery twist and I was seriously impressed with this book! It was enjoyable, fun, and an excellent new take on a beloved classic.

My favorite thing about this book was how well it incorporated elements of Pride and Prejudice. The characters and major plot points remained, staying true to their source material, but the rest of the story was uniquely woven around them to give it a fresh feel. The murder mystery also added an aspect of unpredictability that I always find important when reading retellings, and this was done perfectly.

Tirzah Price is very clearly a seasoned writer, and it really shows in her debut book. The writing was engaging, the pacing was excellent, and the weaving of Pride and Prejudice elements with originality was cleverly done. I look forward to reading more Jane Austen murder mysteries from her in the future!

Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price was such a refreshing read! While it has been quite a while since I have read my copy of Pride and Prejudice, my high school obsession still allowed me to pick out some connections that were made with the original. This is not a mere retelling, but a use of characters, emotions, and quips that will give you just enough flashbacks to make it sweet. Lizzie's father is a barrister, much like a lawyer, who she yearns to work for and use the tools of the trade she has learned from him, much to her meddling mother's poor nerves. To prove to her father (and society) that she has the logic and skills to become a barrister, Lizzie does some work to help a one, Mr. Bingley, in his precarious position. Only Mr. Bingley has rendered the services of his barrister friend, brooding Mr. Darcy. Murder, mystery, solving crimes, and a little flirting fill the story and gives Lizzie some insight into herself and her family.

This was charming and overall wonderful. If you are a fan of Pride and Prejudice this is a great retelling that pays homage to the original while at the same time being something completely it's own. And if you are not a fan of the original or don't know it, this story stands completely by itself as an entertaining historical mystery. Keep in mind if you are a staunch historian, liberties with women's roles at time were altered and the author makes note of it, but if historically accurate details don't matter (which they don't even a little to me) then I highly recommend this adorable read.

I was pleasantly surprised that while this was very much a murder mystery (multiple murders, kidnapping, all kinds of overall mayhem), the tone of the story staid light and easy, making each chapter fun and engaging for me to read. Also, I am not a big historical fiction fan but I found this super approachable and easy to get lost in. It didn't hurt that Lizzie was a great spunky character and the relationship dynamics around her were interesting.

Pride and Premeditation is perfect for anyone who likes classic retellings, murder mysteries, great characters, and the proper etiquette for historical social norms. This is the first in a series and I have no idea if the next book will be about Lizzie or another Austen character but I will for sure be reading it.

I enjoyed this retelling of Pride and Prejudice. There was little romance in this and I was okay with that. It focused on Lizzie's journey to prove to her father that she is worthy of hiring at his firm. Bingley is accused of a murder and Lizzie goes to the prison to convince him to hire her on his case. Unfortunately, Darcy, her father's firm's competition, will be representing. So she starts her own investigation on the murder case with Mr. Bingley's consent. She and Darcy go head to head at first about how to approach Bingley's case, but end up finding out working together makes the job much easier. It had a good amount of scandal and was overall an enjoyable read. Thank you for the opportunity to read in exchange for an honest review.

⭐⭐⭐💫
I wanted to looooove this book, but instead I really liked it. I didn't love Lizzie (😱), and wanted more from supporting characters - especially Charlotte and Mrs. Bennett. It was a bit slow to start, but the action and the mystery picked up in the 2nd half of the book. It was fun to revisit a classic, and I will definitely read the next book in the series.

Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price is a mystery retelling of Pride and Prejudice, and I absolutely loved this book. It was such a fun, twisty read. Here I have compiled a nice little list of five reasons why I love this book:

1. It's a murder mystery, feminist retelling of Pride and Prejudice! Need I say more?
2. Protagonist Lizzy Bennett is bright and spunky, and I daresay that the retelling version of her is even better than the original.
3. The plot twists! I repeat: THE PLOT TWISTS! More than one of them had me gaping at the page in complete shock.
4. The mystery is very twisty and will keep you guessing till the last page! I thought I had it all figured out, but then plot twists happened (see #4).
5. Tirzah Price has the most authentic Jane Austen writing style I've ever read!

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a mystery retelling, especially if you enjoyed Pride and Prejudice!

Read this once back in January when I got an advance copy, and I am so excited it lived up to my own hype on both the first and second reads! It's a perfect blend of the characters from the Jane Austen novel, with a similar setting but also plenty more intrigue, drama, and MURDER. The mystery is well-crafted, and it made me so happy to see a bada** heroine like Lizzy unravel the clues to solve the case. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loved Stalking Jack the Ripper!

A fantastic ride, coupled with nostalgic invocations of the original text. Excited to see what Price does next.

I love Pride and Prejudice retellings. This one was very unique! However I don’t read a ton of historical fiction so I struggled with the writing of this one. If you are a contemporary Pride and Prejudice retelling reader, skip this one. If you like historical/period novels, I think you’d enjoy this and the creativity behind it!

A cute historical fiction retelling/mystery where Lizzie Bennet is reimagined as an intrepid future barrister--inhibited only by the patriarchy. She sets off on a mission to solve a murder to convince her father that she can take a job at the family's law offices. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Austen novel, and I love reading/watching retellings of it. I enjoyed Lizzie's escapades, and this book is a perfect afternoon diversion.

The mystery kept me guessing until the end--the plot involves a good bit of danger (as it should) and more than once, Lizzie found herself in a bind. Price's writing moves the story well, and I liked the pacing. I finished in a day because it's on the shorter side, but there's a perfect balance of excitement and cozy mystery that you could put it down and come back later.

My favorite aspect was the plot thread about Lizzie's dreams of becoming a barrister. Being a Regency novel, she's up against men taking credit for her work and not believing she's as capable of the hard jobs. It's entertaining to watch Lizzie turn her gender into an advantage in some situations to extract information or do some detective work as a way of countering that. I don't want to spoil the book for you, but this thread has such a satisfying resolution! Price did a great job with that.

The classic Lizzie-Darcy banter is out in full force as Darcy works at a rival firm, and is also trying to prove the innocence of their client. Rivals to lovers is fun to read, and their slow realization that they may be something more is well-earned. I liked that the romance took a backseat to the mystery, though. There are so many Austen adaptations out there for a romance main plot, but this one is truly original for the thriller aspects.

4/5 stars to Pride and Premeditation. Links above for you to order your copy!

I just finished reading 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, the brand new buzzy regency murder mystery by Tirzah Price, and I had such a fun time with it! A fast-paced, witty, and suspenseful retelling of Jane Austen’s beloved 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘦, this book retains Austen’s quintessential characters —the Bennets, the Bingleys, and of course, Mr. Darcy— except here, they’re all a bunch of lawyers. Well, at least all the men are lawyers. ⁣

Elizabeth Bennet desperately wants to be a lawyer too, and she would be great, if only women were allowed to be solicitors. She helps solve cases for her father’s firm but even the benevolent Mr. Bennet won’t let her work for him unless she proves herself capable. So of course, when Lizzie finds out that there has been a murder in town and someone has been wrongfully arrested for it, she decides to take up the case, prove the man innocent, and find the real killer. Except a certain Mr. Darcy seems intent on getting in her way...⁣⁣

If you love period dramas, nineteenth century novels, charming whodunnits, feminist heroines, and incredibly quotable lines, then this is definitely the book for you! The writing is great, the characters are faithful to their originals, and there is lots of good humor. Did we really need another P&P retelling? Maybe not. But this is one of the better ones, when it comes to literary adaptations, and is a very light and entertaining read! ⁣

Here are some of my favorite lines from the book, so you can have an idea of what it’s like:⁣

“𝐀 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬 . . . 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐬, 𝐧𝐨. 𝐀 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞.” (LOL. Classic Mrs. Bennet.) ⁣

“𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐧.” (Sad, but so, so true!) ⁣

I was a fan of this story. I’m a huge Jane Austen junkie and have recently been getting into murder mysteries I was so happy to come across this!
Lizzie is, as always, a great main character and the author is able to keep the banter between her and Darcy that I love most. I am a little sad that there’s a little less romance to let the mystery take the lead, but I still had a great time and will continue with the other books in the series

Pride and Premeditation hits a lot of notes that tempt me – it’s a Jane Austen retelling, a murder mystery, and an historical romance.

This novel sets Elizabeth Bennett in London as the daughter of a barrister striving to prove her worth. She is the second of five sisters, and while Lizzie wants nothing more than to practice law, her mother worries more over her marital prospects. Lizzie does a lot of work behind the scenes at her father’s firm, but wants to be hired and formally trained. In order to show her father she has what it takes, Lizzie takes on a dubious case: a gentleman, Mr. Charles Bingley, has been accused of murdering his feckless brother-in-law.

Lizzie encounters Bingley, a charming fellow, and his less-than-friendly counsel, Mr. Darcy. While Darcy insists he has the case in hand, Lizzie disagrees with his methods, and conducts her own investigation. In seeking the truth, Lizzie encounters danger, lies, and conspiracies, all while continuing to bump into the frustrating and beguiling Mr. Darcy.

The path of Pride and Prejudice is one often trod, and there is a certain rhythm to a lot of stories that do a take on Jane Austen’s most famous work. This story completely throws convention out of the carriage, creating an all-new world populated with some familiar friends. It can be a bit repetitive to read the same story with different details over and over, but this novel is different. The murder-mystery really adds something, and the way Lizzie is characterized adds dimension to her personality. Not only is she ambitious and headstrong, but unlike the source material, she aspires to a profession, and she applies herself to a discipline. The role of the other Bennett sisters is drastically reduced, as the marriage plot takes a slight backseat. Readers who love to be annoyed by Mrs. Bennett will not be disappointed, she is truly a delight, and while Mr. Bennett is a tad more useful than you might remember him, he is also a treat.

The romance is stellar, and while it isn’t the main focus of the story, Lizzie’s growing awareness of Darcy is natural and their mutual respect is earned. Darcy’s character comes across honestly and his presence feels familiar and grouchy, just as fans love. There are some really romantic, sweet scenes that still have a lot of tension.

While this take isn’t entirely faithful to the source material, it works well as a narrative and the changes add to its appeal. In many ways, this retelling has some elements that I prefer to the original story. (Controversial, I know, but dear Jane didn’t have access to third-wave feminism. We can’t blame her for that!) I would sincerely recommend Pride and Premeditation to any fan of Austen retellings, or readers looking for some light murder mystery.

4.5 stars! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. Between my love of Pride and Prejudice, the addition of a murder mystery and the cover, I was so in. I was not disappointed! As someone who is very familiar with the story, I saw some of the twists coming... but I enjoyed the journey! I also loved how the author added in some feminist spins and I could care less whether it's historically accurate. I appreciated that she addressed some of the many problematic aspects of Regency life. I wish the whole series was going to take place in the Pride & Prejudice world, but it will be fun to see the other stories come to life.

This book built on the unflinching foundation that is Jane Austen and took its own course. With a cast of familiar characters in roles that managed to be familiar and utterly unique to this book, following Lizzie Bennet on an adventure that Austen could only have wished to see written. If she could have seen forward to the slightly rebalanced social climate now, then I could easily see her have casting Lizzie into an investigatory role.

I loved the location usage, and the way that names were used with creative flourish. The fact that Mr Bennet was somewhat doting on Lizzie and allowed her the chance to prove herself did raise a smile; he was always the kinder of the parents in the original!

Lizzie Bennet is an ambitious young woman hoping for a chance to be a barrister or solicitor for her father’s firm. However, law is no place for a young lady in the reimagined Pride and Prejudice. We meet all the same characters from Jane Austen’s original work, but with a new, exciting twist of murder and mystery.
This was a fun take on a classic novel with Lizzie reimagined as a clever aspiring lawyer/detective seeking justice and Mr. Darcy as opposing counsel. I would have liked seeing more of the interactions between Mr. Darcy and Lizzie as a means of establishing their rivalry-turned-romance. It was entertaining seeing these classic characters in new roles involving murder and mysterious villains.
