If you are into suspenseful, engaging, and satisfying crime thrillers, this is just the perfect book for you!

3.5 stars!!
This was an utterly intriguing and suspenseful installment in the Tracy Crosswhite series! Though I haven't actively followed this series, but I think that this book could be read as a stand-alone. The story was plotted very well. It was intriguing with lots of twists and turns. The pacing is fast. In spite of the three investigations, the pace is fast. The transitions are very well done.

I really liked the way Detective Crosswhite’s character was portrayed. Dugoni knows how to keep his audience on the edge of their seat. The dialogues were very well and authentically written. The character development was excellently done.

I never fail to appreciate the moral of Dugoni’s stories: family bonds, loss, and forgiveness. I should definitely catch up on finishing the previous books in this series. Also can't wait for the next installment in the Tracy Crosswhite series!

Many thanks to NetGalley, and the publisher for providing a review copy of In Her Tracks! All opinions are my own.

In Her Tracks by Robert Dugoni
Tracy Crosswhite #8

This was a win for me! I usually avoid well established series but for some reason decided to give this book a try and am so glad that I did. I was not lost starting on book eight and followed easily. I wouldn’t mind knowing more about Tracy, her past cases, her husband, child, nanny, work-team, or other things BUT…this stood on its own without that information to cushion it.

What I liked:
* Tracy: cop, wife, mother, friend, dedicated, professional, persistent, focused, detail oriented, very good at her job, educated, results oriented, and so much more.
* Dan: loving, kind, generous, romantic, professional, excellent with Tracy – wouldn’t mind knowing more about him and how he and Tracy ended up together.
* The dual story lines
* The writing
* The glimpses of people she worked with
* The way she handled tension with her immediate superior
* The decision Tracy made about her job and future
* The police procedural aspect of the story
* The twists and turns
* The way everything was tied up at the end of the book – no cliffhanger – and ended with me “okay” with how things turned out.
* Wondering what might happen next

What I didn’t like:
* Knowing that there are psycho sickos out there as evil and perverted as the ones portrayed in this book

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author/in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Tracy Crosswhite is back from her maternity and medical leaves, eager to work with the Seattle PD's Violent Crimes A team again. This team has been together over a decade, work together exceptionally well, and love each other like family. With her support at home (husband Dan, and nanny Therese), Lisa Walsh, the counselor she's been seeing for her PTSD (a result of a tough case last winter), and her team backing her up, Tracy is ready to get involved in the work she loves the most.

Unfortunately, Captain Johnny Nolasco, with whom she shares a mutual animosity, tells her there is no position for her on the Violent Crimes A or B squads, and offers her the job of working Cold Cases instead. She must decide whether to accept this reassignment by the end of the day. Determined not to let Nolasco's pettiness take away something she loves, she takes the assignment.

While looking into three disappearances that occurred near the same spot, including that of a 5 year-old girl that occurred five years ago, a young woman goes missing while jogging. With other detectives from the VC team A tied up in court cases, her old buddy Kinsington Rowe asks her to help with the investigation on the jogger case. Perhaps Tracy can find a connection between the old and new cases, and she and Kins can find the missing jogger before it's too late. They're already running (ok, pun intended!) out of time.

I love the Tracy Crosswhite series and will continue to follow it! I love how strong, yet flawed, Tracy is, the camraderie she shares with her team, the exciting cases they work. Dugoni is always good for a very good read and this offering is futher proof of that.

My thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer who permitted me to read an ARC of this paperback published 4/20/21. All opinions expressed in my review are my own.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I love this series and it just keeps getting better. Tracy comes back from maternity leave only to find out she has been transferred to Cold Case Unit. Unhappy about it, she is determined to show how good of a detective she is. I highly recommend this.

I’d like to thank Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘In Her Tracks’ written by Robert Dugoni in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Detective Tracy Crosswhite returns to the Seattle Police Department after extended maternity and sick leave and is told by Captain Johnny Nolasco that she’s being moved to investigate Cold Cases. As Tracy becomes absorbed in the file of five-year-old Elle Chin who disappeared five years ago while at a corn maze night with her father, her partner Detective Kinsington Rowe asks for her help in the search for Stephanie Cole who disappeared while out jogging and has now been missing for two days.

‘In Her Tracks’ is the first book I’ve read by this author and although it’s the eighth in the series it’s been so well written that I don’t feel disadvantaged by not having read the previous seven. From the first page I was hooked and the complex and macabre plot, suspense, excitement and twists and turns only made me want to read faster. Although the identity of the perpetrator was evident from early on I wasn’t prepared for the twist that turned everything around and completely took me by surprise. The epilogue gave a warm and just finality to Tracy’s cold case and tied up all the loose ends. This thriller is thoroughly enjoyable and one I can wholeheartedly recommend, it’s well-deserving of five stars and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Yet another "can't put it down" book from Robert Dugoni. This series continues as one of my favorites, with great twists, interesting characters, and writing that keeps you from getting anything else done :)

In this book, Tracy Crosswhite is back in Seattle and back to work with the Seattle Police Department Violent Crimes task force, only her delightful captain has other things in mind for her so things aren't quite what they were when she went out on leave. But in classic Crosswhite style, she figures out a way to work with her old colleagues anyway, and that's when things get interesting!

The only thing that I thought was a little wonky was when Tracy didn't know what a panic attack was. That seemed a little unusual given Tracy's level of education and experience with people with varying mental health issues. Otherwise, this book was awesome!

This series will stay on my list to keep reading - even though this book just came out, I can't wait for the next one!

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas&Mercer for the free ARC, this review is my own opinion.

I really enjoy the Tracy Crosswhite novels. This one felt a bit off for me though. Tracy didn't seem quite like her usual self and the secondary story about the little girl didn't add to the narrative.

The best part of reading a series is the additional time to watch a character grow. In this book, in addition to taking on a new role in the Seattle PD, Tracy makes progress in dealing with the loss of her sister and the trauma from what happened in [book:A Cold Trail|44151100]. A younger Tracy wouldn't have considered therapy but slowly she has come to appreciate it. See? Character growth! But this is a minor subplot in a book full of twisty cases and Tracy's continued fight with her supervisor Nolasco. I like that Tracy has matured a bit. She may have settled down at home but she is still the all-in detective we love!

EXCERPT: 'Let's play hide and seek, Daddy.'

'We don't have time for that, Elle. We have to get through.'

'Please, Daddy.'

'I'm sorry, honey. Maybe we can play at home.'

Elle cried. Then she sat down in the dirt.

'Elle, get up, honey. You're getting your costume dirty.'

'No.'

'Honey, you have to stand up.'

'I want to play. Mommy lets me play.'

The counsellor Chin had seen for his court-ordered anger-management classes had warned that kids going through a contentious divorce could become defiant and play one parent off against the other.

'Elle. You need to stand up.'

'No. Graham plays with me.'

Chin felt his heart ripping apart. 'Okay. One quick game. All right?'

Elle got to her feet. 'Yay!'

'But when I say come out, you have to come out. Okay?'

'You count, Daddy. You have to hide your eyes.'

'Okay, but if I say come out, you come out. Right?'

'Turn around when you count.'

Chin turned and counted. It wouldn't be hard to find Elle's colourful butterfly wings among the green corn stalks. 'One Mississippi. Two Mississippi. Three Mississippi.'

At six he cheated and turned. He didn't see Elle's wings behind the corn stalks. 'Here I come.' He stepped forward. 'I'm coming.' He searched the aisle, looking under the drooping leaves. He turned the corner to another row. Then a third and a fourth. He checked his watch, felt himself starting to panic.

He shouted, 'Okay, Elle. I give up. Come out.' He turned in a circle, looking, hearing the wind rustle the stalks. 'Don't let the lights go out,' he muttered under his breath. He called again. 'Elle? You have to come out. The game is over.'

His heart raced.

He jogged, turning left and right, down the rows, shouting her name. 'Elle. Come out. Elle? Elle!'

He turned a corner, disorientated.

Another corner.

Elle's colourful butterfly wings lay in the dirt.

'Elle!'

Then the lights went out.

ABOUT 'IN HER TRACKS': Returning from an extended leave in her hometown of Cedar Grove, Detective Tracy Crosswhite finds herself reassigned to the Seattle PD’s cold case unit. As the protective mother of an infant daughter, Tracy is immediately drawn to her first file: the abduction of a five-year-old girl whose parents, embattled in a poisonous divorce, were once prime suspects.

While reconstructing the days leading up to the girl’s disappearance, Tracy is brought into an active investigation with former partner Kinsington Rowe. A young woman has vanished on an isolated jogging trail in North Seattle. Divided between two critical cases, Tracy has little to go on except the treacherous deceptions behind a broken marriage—and now, the secrets hiding behind the closed doors of a deceptively quiet middle-class neighborhood.

To find two missing persons, Tracy will have to follow more than clues, which are both long cold and unsettlingly fresh. Given her own traumatic past, Tracy must also follow her instincts—to whatever dark and dangerous places they may lead.

MY THOUGHTS: Another solid addition to Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite series. Tracy is returning to work following her maternity leave and finds that she has been shafted by her longtime arch-nemesis, Nolasco. But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining and Nolasco may just wind up having to eat humble pie.

Tracy's character continues to develop and motherhood seems to have made her more conscious of the effect her personal traumas have had on her, and the need to learn to cope with them, if not overcome them has her regularly seeing a therapist. She has to learn to balance her caseload with her family life, not always an easy task, especially for someone as dedicated and empathetic as Tracy.

There are some unexpected twists and turns, and one that wasn't so surprising to me, that I had guessed earlier on. Even though we know what has happened to Stephanie Cole, the young woman who has been abducted, Dugoni has laid a clever trail of red herrings so that the case is not quite as clear cut as it initially seems. This case somewhat overshadows the cold case involving the disappearance of five year old Elle Chin, and I also felt that the resolution to this was dragged out too long. Despite this, Dugoni kept my interest throughout and I enjoyed this addition to the series.

As a bonus, I think that this book could well be read as a stand-alone, so if you are daunted by the thought of starting this series at book #8, don't be.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.4

This book was a page turner from beginning to end. I literally couldn’t put this book down and finished in one reading. Such a fan of Tracy Crosswhite series and her chasing serial killers and finding the real truth. I literally couldn’t put this down until I found out the truth. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Detective Tracy Crosswhite has been reassigned to Seattle's Cold Case Unit. Though this new position will give her more time with her family, she isn't happy about it.
Digging through old files, Tracy finds the file for missing five year old girl. Personal feelings make her hit the ground running on a case that hasn't been touched in years. While searching for overlooked clues, Tracy is asked to help the current investigation of a missing woman. Now she is juggling both cases, and finding her new position isn't as boring as it had seemed.

This is the eight book in the Tracy Crosswhite series. I have read a few of the other books in the series, not in order, and found that you really don't need to read them in order. Each book hints to past cases and relationships, but its not a huge factor in the plot. The one constant is Tracy, who is a determined detective and great main character.
Usually I like Robert Dugoni's creativity with each book, but I found this one lacking the usual hook. I wasn't super into the story line. It started too slow and never really picked up. I found it quite safe and predictable. A lot of cop chit chat, not a lot of deep digging. I really expected more.
This won't turn me off of the series. I like Dugoni's books, and will definitely keep reading him. This one just wasn't a win for me.

Detective Tracy Crosswhite’s return to active duty, after her maternity leave, does not quite go as planned. Her captain delights in telling her that she will not be returning to her squad, but will be assigned to investigate cold cases. Tracy becomes absorbed in the five-year old case of a missing young girl. The parents had each blamed the other for their child’s abduction as they were going through a contentious divorce. Another cold case involves two missing prostitutes. As Tracy tries to turn up new leads on these cases, her former partner asks for her help with a missing female jogger. They follow the evidence which slowly seems to link the two cases. How would a cold case about missing prostitutes involve a missing jogger? I have really enjoyed this series, but this one at first was a little confusing. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

In Her Tracks is the eighth instalment in Dugoni’s superb Detective Tracy Crosswhite series, set in and around Seattle, Washington. Tracy is returning from medical leave, due to both childbirth and PTSD, to the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crimes Section, and despite missing her baby daughter, Daniela, immensely, she knows her husband, Danny, and new nanny will take good care of her. She soon discovers that her temporary replacement at VCS, Detective Maria Fernandez, has seemingly taken her position. Her manipulative superior, Captain Johnny Nolasco, informs her that there is no place for her in VCS anymore but that she could take a demotion and move to the cold case unit as Detective Art Nunzio is about to retire and she can take up his caseload as the single officer to man the unit. Nolasco is a really nasty piece of work who has had a grudge against Tracy since the days she was a trainee at the police academy and he was her instructor. His aim with pushing her towards investigating cold cases is not a noble one; he hopes that it will impact her emotionally reminding her of her desperate two-decade-old search for her missing sister, Sarah, and that she will eventually resign due to this strain. Pondering the decision, it's Art, a caring and diligent investigator who has an impeccable demeanour and impressive solve rate, who convinces her to take the job and she quickly takes the reins. With big shoes to fill she scours the cases and it's the disappearance of 5-year-old Elle Chin, a young girl whose father, Bobby, was an SPD officer, that initially piques her interest.

He had taken Elle on a day trip to a Halloween corn maze on the one day per week his estranged wife, Jewel, allowing him to spend with her; they were currently going through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle at the time. The file tells Tracy they believe Elle was abducted 5 years ago. As well as this cold case, her old partner at VCS, Detective Kinsington 'Kins' Rowe asks for her help in the active investigation of a missing jogger. Stephanie Cole, a receptionist who had only recently moved to the city, had last been seen in North Park on a running trail. It soon becomes clear that her disappearance can be linked to two prostitutes who vanished from the same quiet, middle-class neighbourhood as Cole. No one saw or heard anything suspicious but even with no evidence or leads to follow they must try to drum some up as Cole may still be alive. Whilst canvassing the local area, Tracy's gut instinct tells her the three Sprague brothers who live together in a rundown property nearby are hiding something. This is a riveting, engrossing and highly addictive addition to an already brilliant series with plenty of drama, exciting developments, tension, twists and genius red herrings and the office politics and favouritism add a different dimension too. Tracy continues to develop and is a likeable and admirable protagonist juggling her life as a young mother with a high-flying and demanding career. It was good to see her progression with her therapist, Lisa Walsh, who has been treating her PTSD. The dark secrets, lies and deception of the plot make for a tasty and scintillating read. Highly recommended.

I discovered Dugoni recently after reading The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. Where have I been?? In Her Tracks is the eighth book in the Tracy Crosswhite series, but can be read as a stand alone. I honestly know that since this is the first book I’ve read in the series, but I’m pretty sure like me, you’ll now want to go back and read the other seven! A well written police procedural that has you flipping pages as the cases progress and come to a satisfying conclusion.

Tracy Crosswhite is back on the job after maternity leave. She's had 100% success in closing her cases but yet her boss does not like her. This character is relatable and I love how the author weaves together different story lines. When a new boom comes out in this series, I don't read the summary, I jist automatically read the entire book. Love this author and this series!

"You’re human, Tracy, which means you’re not perfect. You’re going to fail, through no fault of your own. That’s part of being human, being imperfect. The question is, can you live with being imperfect? Can you live with failure?”

Reassigned to the Cold Case unit, Det. Tracy Crosswhite is immediately drawn to a case involving the disappearance of a five-year-old girl whose parents, embattled in a nasty divorce, were once prime suspects.

As she begins reconstructing the timeline leading up to the girl's disappearance, Tracy's former partner brings her in on an active investigation where a young woman has vanished on an isolated jogging trail in North Seattle.

Divided between two critical cases, Tracy has little to go on but she must follow her instincts—to whatever dark and dangerous places they may lead.

I keep returning to Dugoni's writing for the way his mysteries explore the intensity of human emotions under fire. His characters touch the far end of the spectrum, peeling away the circumstantial layers that drive them to the choices they make. And then there is the jaw-dropping twist at the end which will hit mystery fans hard in the gut.

I am also intrigued by Tracy Crosswhite the protagonist. A woman and a mother, with a physically demanding and mentally exhausting job, she is constantly trying to balance her personal and professional life.

A dark crime thriller that plays havoc with your emotions and a motivated female lead determined to bring justice even if at personal cost, this will continue to surprise you with its engaging storyline and grey characters.

Tracy Crosswhite is back in her 8th novel as the stellar detective and main protagonist of Dugoni’s popular series. In this installment, Tracy is reassigned to cold cases and starts looking into the abduction of a five year old girl and two missing prostitutes. While working those cases, she also teams with her former partner, Kin, who is looking into the disappearance of a young woman on a jogging trail.
Again, Dugoni puts together a strong police procedural, with unexpected twists, that keep you guessing. He also weaves in Tracy’s personal growth as she balances work, being a mom and wife and dealing with her traumatic past. This is a great novel for the mystery lover and can be read as a stand alone, although I do recommend the entire series. Thanks to NetGalley for a digital arc of this book.

Robert Dugoni is at his finest when writing a Tracy Crosswhite novel! The newest addition in this fantastic series comes close to the first installment in terms of being my favorite! Fans of the series, and thrillers in general, will not want to miss this one!

Tracy Crosswhite is returning to work after an extended leave in her hometown of Cedar Grove and now finds her spot with the A team gone as she is reassigned to the cold case unit. With her young daughter at home, Tracy considers the new assignment a good fit with less hectic hours and a chance to solve some of the cases others have forgotten about. Her first case is an abduction of a five-year-old girl whose parents, going through a bitter divorce, are the prime suspects. The case is five years old and Tracy is ready to give it fresh eyes and see if she can find the clues that have evaded everyone else. Along with her cold case, Tracy ends up helping her old partner, Kinsington Rowe, with the investigation into a missing young woman. The search leads them to others missing and Tracy has flashbacks to the case that made her chose the path she has been on for over twenty years: her sister’s disappearance and murder. Tracy must follow her instincts to try and solve the case and not lose herself in the process.

Tracy Crosswhite is one of my very favorite series and favorite characters. I absolutely love the way Dugoni has crafted the character of Tracy and every one of the supporting characters. In Her Tracks is a fantastic new addition to the series as I found myself drawn to the cases Tracy was investigating. With her now being a mother, she has a new and different connection to the cases she works. Of course, there is still the wonderful dynamic between her and Kinsington and the tension between her and their boss, Johnny Nolasco, which drives the story even deeper into the readers hearts. Dugoni is one of the very best when it comes to writing suspense; he has found a way to craft a story that pulls readers in and makes it hard to do anything but finish the story. That’s what always happens with a Robert Dugoni book, you pick it up and you are transported to the world of his imagination and it is a fabulous get away of fictional delight.

I recommend this book to anyone that loves suspense, action, drama, and so much more. If you haven’t read any of the previous Crosswhite books, you can still enjoy this one but not as much as if you start with the beginning of the series and see it all the way through.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite is back!

Yes, Tracy Crosswhite is back after an extended leave and has been reassigned to the the Cold Case unit. She is drawn to the file of a five-year-old girl who went missing while visiting a corn maze with her father. Her parents who were going through an ugly divorce at the time were the main suspects.

While investigating the missing girl’s case, she is asked to assist on the case of a missing young woman who vanished while jogging. She is reunited with her former partner, Kinsington "Kins" Rowe and the two dive into this case and find both old and new clues.

Another great addition to the Tracy Crosswhite series! It was nice to visit Tracy again and see her interacting with her baby and using her detective skills to solve crimes. This book will work as a stand-alone but starting from the beginning, will showcase the character development and growth of this series.

I found this book to be well written and I enjoyed watching Tracy and Kins investigate the cases. I also loved seeing Tracy as a mother. We get to see her being tough as nails yet tender. Nurturing and intuitive. Brave and beautiful. Intelligent and interesting. Plus, as we are often told, she can outshoot anyone on her team! In this book we see her willing to accept help and face her issues and past traumas in therapy.

This was a great installment, and I can't wait to see what future cases Tracy will work on. I also enjoyed seeing Tracy rub Johnny Nolasco's (her boss) nose in it!!!! Things really ramp up towards the end which had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen.

Riveting, tense and with a sense of danger!

Thank you to Thomas and Mercer and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
