Honestly, I was really excited when reading the synopsis. I thought it was an interesting read, but I couldn't really like the characters. So far, I find it really difficult to relate to them. The FML does shit without explaining herself and expects people to understand her and the ML is like what are you doing?! I am not sure if I will read the next one because I wasn't a fan of the characters.

The Fallen Queen starts off with a riveting introduction on the rise and fall of the greatest strategic queen to ever live- Queen Swan Sekalrid Rarkalia.

I wanted to love this book so bad because there was so much potential. The premise of the book was strong- a queen torn between love for family and her thirst for war and domination, reincarnated for a second chance to right her wrongs.

My major issue has to be with the flow of the storyline, it felt very disjointed between the flashbacks and little to no explanation of the present. The writing itself did not do justice to a lot of pivotal moments which would have set the tone for the entire novel. A lot of the scenes had no justification or backstory so you were left to piece together the author’s intent.

The characters felt a bit underdeveloped in certain aspects, both on their own, and also when written together. There was a subtle disconnect between the characters and the circumstances they found themselves in. There was also a lot of moments in this book that had me astounded- one of which is the incestual like relationship that developed which I was willing to look past if it had been properly justified.

There was a lot of talk about strategy and war but again, pivotal moments that should have been expanded to enhance the overall plotline weren’t which resulted in rushed main scenes.

I definitely think this book has the potential to be amazing and if the premise and plotline focused on “second chances” it would have been dynamite. Instead, it read like a recollection of memories forcing its way into the present with characters who aren’t exactly sure who they are or what they stand for. I would love to see the follow up in the Mariposa series and the progression of the characters.

I want to thank NetGalley and the author for providing me with an arc.

"Fallen Queen" by Y. R. Shin follows Reuyen who is the reincarnated treacherous queen of Rarke as she helps finish a two hundred year old conflict.

My overall impression is that it's a very average book with one glaring problem: It doesn't have a clear, overarching plot. The book starts out with Reuyen on a desperate search to find her last remaining brother who's joined the army to avenge their older brother after his death. However, once she finds her brother and enlists in the army, all she does is follow orders until they deliver her to the next big plot point, making the novel unappealing.

The book left only a small impression on me, and no appeal to continue the series.

Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of Fallen Queen in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not really sure what to say about this book because I can't put my finger on why it didn't work for me. I know it was the narrative structure, but I can't actually point to what about it left me so completely incapable of connecting with any of the characters and plot threads. The story was okay and average but I had a lot of trouble keeping track of it because of how detached the narrative made me.

Anyways, sorry this is so vague. This wasn't the right book for me.
