Anna Harrington is one of my favorite writers right now. An Extraordinary Lord is the third book in The Lords of the Armory series. The entire series is working to uncover a criminal organization and I highly suggest reading them all. This does however work beautifully as a stand alone.

Fans of Elizabeth Hoyt's Maiden Lane series rejoice! Harrington gives us Lord Merritt Rivers...barrister by day and
vigilante by night. Full of guilt, grief and darkness he is working to protect the innocent...while uncovering criminals for the home office. Which is how this detective show like meet up with Veronica Chase comes about. By chance, Merritt meets a woman capturing a criminal to discover she is the one he is looking for. He and home office need an ally to discover who is behind the recent mobs.

I really loved this book. Harrington writes the action so masterfully. I loved getting to see London's dark underbelly and to follow Veronica's life. Great back stories here too that lead to so much heart. I LOVED the sparks between Merritt and Veronica. They have a chemistry that builds and builds. You won't be disappointed!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Lords of the Armory are a series of books about men who have come back from war and are ever more changed from it. The men who are asked to join have all become Lords in different ways as they try to circumnavigate their new reality and maybe find love. The Extraordinary Lord by Anna Harrington is the third book in this series.

Lord Merritt Chase has dedicated his nights to tracking down criminals. During the day he is a solicitor (ie lawyer). He has recently been knighted and is rather displeased by the selection.
One night while he was out tracking down trouble, he met a woman dressed In black with knives - lots of knives and the ability to scare the bejesus out of anybody. She is Veronica Chase and he is stunned.

Veronica Chase has hidden her past and is living in a world so foreign to many people. She tries to help the downtrodden and hides in a building with other people who are struggling. Running into Lord Merritt Chase - that's a surprise. Finding out he's a Lord - that's shocking. Together the two of them have a mystery to solve. Riots in the street bats seem to suggest it's time to overthrow the king, but why and who is behind the treason. Together they have to find the solution, but will they be in time?

Anna Harrington has written two previous books in this series. I have enjoyed meeting the various people who have banded together in order to face their struggles returning from war. I think it's notable that Anna Harrington has given us characters that could be put in any year end place. The Extraordinary Lord is a fun read.

*Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for an advanced electronic copy in exchange for an honest review.

I read A LOT of historical romance and I liked how different the characters and their backgrounds were from the normal fare. There was a ballroom scene but it was a fun fish-out-of-water (maybe?) experience.

Lord Merritt Rivers is one extremely busy guy with a lot going on. He's a Baron, a solicitor, former solider AND hunts in the evening for some mysterious revenge.

Veronica Chase has a secret hidden past, an accent Merritt can't place, major fighting skills and somehow ended up in a shanty with her brother and some other downtrodden characters.

This book is filled with so much action (lots and lots of swords, if that's your thing) and a mystery that runs throughout the series. The book was very well written and researched but I wish we could see Merritt and Veronica's personalities and relationship develop a little more other then they both think each other is very attractive and mysterious.

I look forward to the continuation of the series!

This was a fun time!
It reminded me of the couple Esmeralda and Phoebus from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (yes the Disney movie). They had the opposites attract thing going on which worked for majority of the story. These two become reluctant partners when the hero is trying to bring down a group of criminals.
The plot does take over the romance from time to time but that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story overall.
If you're looking for an action, adventure romance definitely try to pick this one up!

After his service in the army, Merritt was made a baron by the prince regent. He spends his days as a barrister and his nights hunting criminals on the streets of London. He’s also been tasked by the Home Office to find out who is organizing the riots in the city. On his hunt for an escaped convict, Merritt runs into a female thief-taker. Sparks fly. They are equally matched in sword play. He is immediately attracted to her. But when he asks her name, he finds out she is the criminal he’s hunting.

Veronica lives on the streets after moving to London from Portugal. She is innocent of wrongdoing, but confessed to the crime of another to protect her foster brother Filipe, who guards their community of poor. After being caught by Merritt, she agrees to help the Home Office discover who is behind the riots in exchange for a full pardon.

An Extraordinary Lord is the third title in Ms. Harrington’s delightful Lords of the Armory series. I’m enjoying the overarching storyline following the mysterious and devious group, Scepter. I enjoy its darker aspect and how it gives mystery to the stories, and especially how it connects each book. Merritt and his brothers at the Armory are determined to discover Scepter’s connection to the unusual riots. However, Merritt has a personal stake in the his search for answers: his fiancée was brutally killed in a mob riot five years ago. He is determined to have his revenge, and this drive takes his heart to a dark place. His motives, while justified, are a bit one-dimensional and honestly, I wish he’d been able to get past Joanna’s death sooner than he did.

Veronica is a wonderful, modern heroine. The daughter of a Portuguese Count, she lost everything when invaders killed her father. She’s surviving in London, but being with Merritt, she recognizes that she doesn’t fit into her current life, but she can’t upgrade into society either. Veronica is a three-dimensional character, full of life and experiencing so many emotions. She gives herself to Merritt, knowing he will never fully accept her, a criminal, and knowing he is still haunted by his deceased fiancée. In fact, Merritt’s conflict over the fact that she’s a criminal becomes repetitive as he constantly must remind himself in order to counter his attraction to Veronica.

An Extraordinary Lord is another engrossing adventure with ties to Scepter. The Lords of the Armory still don’t know who is the ultimate mastermind, but they do know Scepter’s end game. I liked the match of Veronica and Merritt – both unique individuals and hardened fighters. They work together well, a team, once he gets over his need to protect her and his haunted memories of Joanna.

My Rating: B – Liked It

Two wounded souls brought together by fate. Their first meeting was blazing with chemistry. It hooked me right in.
The hero, Merritt, is a barrister, a major and a recently appointed baron. He is prowling the streets at night looking for the man who killed his fiancee.
The heroine, is an orphan, an escaped convict and a thief taker. Abandoned as a child, left to survive on her own.
They come together to solve a mystery, "Who is causing the riots".
All signs point to Scepter, a group trying to take over the government.
(A Side point is the first 2 books in the series also deal with Scepter)
Will the action, adventure and danger bring these 2 together and help heal their troubled souls.

An Extraordinary Lord is a page turning steamy regency romance full of adventure and passion.

Merrick and Veronica are characters that don't make it easy to trust each other but they do respect and like each other from the start, they just have to get through a lot of demons and past hurt before they get to their happily ever after.

A soldier turned barrister and a nobleman's daughter in the criminal underworld make for enticing and challenging times. Forming an alliance leads from danger to love in a well crafted story by Anna Harrington.

Oh my LORD! Just when I thought I couldn't like this series any more than I already do, THIS book comes out! The book opens with an exciting scene between the H and h that was SIZZLING with chemistry! I could not WAIT to finish the book, it kept my interest throughout, between the plot and the two main characters! This book has a strong romantic element but also has adventure and mystery, which is a perfect type of book for me. I think it works better if you start at the beginning of the series so you can get to know all the characters involved and get familiar with the overarching plot of the series. I always love this author's books, and this high-energy and sexy book is a marvelous addition to the Lords of the Armory series (this is book 3). There are a few more lords who are part of the Armory, so I am SO looking forward to the next book in the series!!! I highly recommend this book!

After the death of his fiancee Lord Merritt Rivers spent a few years as a soldier. Now he is following his father's footsteps in the practice of the Law. The war is over now but England is still in turmoil, with riots in the streets. So by day he is a solicitor and by night he prowls the streets trying to keep people safe.

Veronica Chase is a very unusual woman, with a mysterious background. She is also prowling the streets, but as a thief-taker. (That's a bit like a bounty hunter.) Of course that means she has to know how to protect herself.

This historical romance is full of dangerous fights and more than a few giggles. Our hero is very witty and not at all like most historical romance heroes. Our heroine is feisty and independent and definitely not an innocent society miss. I fell in love with them on the first page and it more interesting from there on.

This is part of a series but easily read on it's own. You will meet characters from the previous books, but not enough to spoil them if you haven't read them yet.

Really great fun.

It's taken me three books to get into the lords of the armory plot, but this book finally hit the spot for me. I loved how different it was. The issue I have had with this series is that I am not a huge fan of political action romances because they can be pretty dense. An Extraordinary Lord is well-researched, and the characters are rich and compelling.

When Lord Merritt Rivers, barrister and nighttime avenger, meets Veronica Chase on one of his nightly prowls, he's immediately drawn to her strength and wit. They work together to uncover the plot behind Sceptre, a shadowy organization of aristocrats (etc.) who intend to overthrow the government.

I loved that Veronica was not a naive virgin. She has life and sexual experience and isn't afraid to share it with Merritt. I was less interested in Merritt's reasoning for why he did what he did, BUT I loved that Veronica wasn't willing to settle for less. She's a kick-ass heroine, and I loved that Harrington followed through on that promise. She didn't punk out at the end and fold to Merritt's trauma. She forced him to come to her level. He's also forced to come to terms with his own values and black and white thinking around the law.

This book made me go back and finish book 2 of this series, and it also helped me understand the whole spectre plot. The jump from book 1 to 2 was a bit rocky, and I sort of dnf'ed it. It's definitely worth a second look.

4 1/2*STARS*
Merritt Rivers roams the dark streets of London by night to stop criminals and works by day as a barrister. The night he captures escaped prisoner Veronica Chase, his life will change. Veronica works during the night to protect her family of friends. When her path crosses Merritt's, opportunity opens up to a new life with a pardon. This task will be the two of them working together to stop the riots in the city. There's a much sinister motive underneath these riots. It's their job to find out what it is. The London underworld is center stage to a egomaniac plot and a love story of two lost souls who need each other. Never a dull moment! Violence and very steamy sex. 🔥🔥🔥

This book is has it all... historical-super-hero versus Robin-Hood-heroine... joining forces to combat evil.... and joining (the romantic way). Our heroine is Veronica. She has been through it in the past, and is now a strong, survivor, noble thief-turned-thief-taker. He is Merritt. As expected of all superheroes, he has his alter ego, a barrister and reluctant baron. By night, he is a dark-history motivated good guy, working for the government. He's out searching for a criminal on this fateful night, and... bam... he runs into Veronica. Sparks fly... from swords clashing and attraction between the 2. From the moment she starts calling him Mrs. Fitzherbert (the best cover his addled brain could come up with), we know these 2 are meant to be. How is the author going to get them there? Wow--she crafts this story around an action plot as the 2 are forced to work together to stop a nasty piece of work, the Scepter. They have a lot to work through as individuals AND in acceptance, trust, respect, understanding between them. It's beautiful to witness. Great story with a rich, moving plot and characters that we can root for.

I learned this book is part of a series, and not... I am circling back to the beginning. This story can be read as a stand alone--I did and loved it. I just really loved it... and I want to read more about the other characters in the series. Excellent for a summer weekend read!

This is such a fun take on historical romance. The male protagonist, Merritt, is a barrister by day and a superhero by night. His character is loosely based on Spiderman. He meets his match in Veronica, a thief-taker.

Their meet cute is pretty spectacular. He is searching for an escaped convict and comes across her, as she detains a thief. Swordplay and innuendo ensue.

They have good chemistry and fun backstories. Their romance happens rather quickly. The main thing they join together for is a plot using riots, and I would love to have seen that more deeply examined. Overall, this is a fun and light historical romance. I'll have to check out the rest of the books in this series.

Thank you to Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. These opinions are my own.

An Extraordinary Lord is an extraordinarily good read, and one I regret having finished for the sole reason that I didn't want it to end.

I have been loving this series from Anna Harrington, and looked forward to Merritt's story after his memorable secondary role on An Unexpected Earl. Happy to report that I was not disappointed at all as Merritt (now a Baron and, of course, the titular lord) goes toe-to-toe with the sword-wielding, kindhearted, and mysterious Veronica Chase. From their first meeting, these two were all flirty banter and flashes of steel, and I ATE IT UP. The added dimension of Veronica's criminal history—putting her at odds with Merritt immediately and...irreparably?!—cranked the tension up to the nth degree as they tried to solve their piece of the puzzle that propels this series—the shadowy and dangerous Scepter and their role in the riots causing unrest across London.

Harrington manages her suspense well, balancing it with the romance in a way that leaves neither side lacking and gives the reader every reason to keep reading past their bedtime, just as I did. The pace is rapid but perfect for the story, giving it a sense of urgency, and the clues dropped along the way are, for the most part, subtle enough to slip under the radar. The love between Merritt and Veronica is slow to grow but the lust and attraction is palpable, making it feel like a natural progression—littered with barriers and boundaries and obstacles—to a love that, even as the end approached still felt a little out of reach.

I am keen to see what comes next for the Lords of the Armory. A quick glance on Amazon tells me there is another book due in a few months time (but not Clayton, which *sad face*), and while I wait as patiently as I can for it, I will likely reread these first three books for the simple reason that I love the characters and am loath to say goodbye to them.

This book had a fun premise and a great meet cute. The chemistry between the leads was very exciting and I wish it had been enough to keep me engaged in the story.

Merritt and Victoria are both trying to get to the bottom of some riots that are happening and causing havoc. There was a distinct vibe of Phoebus and Esmerelda from the two of them. There was a court of miracles and a man of the law who wants to do good in his own way and everything. It was very enjoyable up to a point.

For me the chemistry promised between these two characters didn't hold up all the way through and I felt like I was missing vital pieces to make their romance a success.

3.5/5 stars.

The thing I have loved about this series is that they are based on action, saving people, and the female main characters are as essential to carrying out the plans as the male MCs. Veronica and Merritt are no exception. She is a sword-fighting woman of the streets; he is a respected barrister and a baron. And yet, he willingly includes her in his plans and planning. I love that.

Also, their banter is fantastic. They are equals in both love and war, and it shows.

One thing I couldn't help but think about in this was the BLM protests last year. The soldiers are English bit feel unwanted by the political hierarchy. And so they rioted. The way that Merritt handled this was deft, but it didn't seem like Harrington herself had an agenda -- after all, Merritt's solution was more cops. But that was surely in the air while this was being written.

This is my fair and honest review, voluntarily given and in my own words, for this ARC. What a splendid tale!! Amazing characters with so much depth and grit. Well written story that will pull you in and keep you in it's thrall Definitely one you should read!!

Overall, another great installment to this series. The biggest difference between this book and the previous 2 is that there was no previous relationship between the two main characters so it took me longer to get behind them as a couple. The "love (well, mostly lust) at first sight" scenario stretched believability a bit - it would have been better had they had some kind of run in before, but they literally meet, duel, and are interested in one another. I also couldn't believe it when Veronica told this complete stranger her real name - how on earth had she survived so long if she's going around revealing her identity to everyone she meets? And it sounds silly, but since I had met Merritt in the previous books and liked him I hated the way Veronica treated him at the beginning. I did enjoy following their stories as their relationship grew and I did come to like Veronica before the end. There were some good twists and turns at the end with the riots and both Veronica and Merritt's encounters with people from their past. Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

This one looked extremely promising - I absolutely love stories like this, with people working on the wrong side of the law to better other people's lives. Unfortunately, I found myself skimming 90% of the words trying to get past the painfully awkward banter and fight scenes that would have been better in a movie. Phrases like "Deception flared in her eyes" illustrate what bothers me with this novel. What does that even mean? If it hadn't been awkward and overwritten, I think I'd have greatly enjoyed this story.

This is book 3 of the Lords of the Armory series and it's my favorite. Give me a sword fighting heroine and a brooding hero, with all their attraction and chemistry. I love these two!

Merritt is a former soldier, now barrister and Baron, who has had a hard time settling down after the Napoleonic wars and the traumatic death of his fiancee. Veronica is a thief taker, a Robin Hood of sorts, who has survived the loss of her family and life on the Continent, now helping her found family in London. Sparks fly, both from attraction and the sword fight between them. I loved these non-traditional characters. They are interesting, they have depth, they have darkness to fight without being dark themselves.

Merritt and Veronica are two people who are each responding to things in their pasts and the danger in their present day, looking for some redemption and a way to make things better for others. They mirror each other so much. I really love that it isn't just one character (usually the hero) who needs the redemption and "only finds it through love." Instead, both Merritt and Veronica are fighting demons. Both characters need the other to let go and open up and trust. And in the end, while love obviously gets them to a place of acceptance and the HEA, they also grow to learn that they did the best the could in the past and it's ok, they can let it go and move forward.

And the moving forward is definitely together. Merritt and Veronica have chemistry and heat for days. Sexy times are on the page and hot, hot, hot. Danger bang when you least expect it.

The series has a spies component, and while I love a spy book filled with world building and intrigue, I think Harrington takes the better course here with this series in centering the romances. The spies and mystery serve as external conflict and high tension, while we remain focused on the main love interests. It was a great balance for me. At the same time, here in book 3, Harrington does settle the mystery and give us the bad guys. I've read other series where that mystery storyline was just tucked away and ignored, or finished with a whimper. Not here. Even when not the primary focus, when the spy story/mystery is a common thread throughout a series and has put the main characters in danger, it has to be settled satisfactorily. And Harrington does that here.

As the third in a series with a mystery and spy plot, readers should read the whole series to avoid spoilers of who the bad guys are. But for readers who don't mind that spoiler, this will work as a standalone for the main romance.

Anna Harrington's books have been getting better and better with each series. This is her best one yet and I could not put it down. This one is a keeper. I'm already recommending this one to other romance readers. I recommend this to historical romance fans and romance fans looking for a spy plot.
