Really love this Book Club Kit as a supplement to Mexican Gothic. I read this book last year & it was nice to reflect upon a story that has stayed with me! The questions were provocative and the playlist & doll outfits really brought the book to life for me. Would definitely recommend for Book Clubs or anyone who wants to reflect on the book alone!

Super interesting!
A perfect guide for those in love with this story.
For my part I will have it in hand when I am reading the book. and in this way the story becomes more magical for me.

I haven't read the book, so I didn't want to dive too deep into this in order not to spoil myself. But I did love it as a book club kit, and might use it as well! It has some very cute segments I have seen before!

Thank you for sending me the Book Club Kit for Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Overall I found this to be a very useful Book Club Kit, it is short and concise but still contains great material for discussion. I recommend it as inspiration for post-reading discussion.

This Penguin Random House Book Club Kit is such a great idea. It's short and concise, spicing up your book club meeting without making a literal plan or taking up your entire time as a group.
This kit consists of:
- a list of inventive, poignant questions; I love how thought provoking and open they are, welcoming many different points of view in your group
- a letter from the author
- historical context of the book
- a fun playlist curated by the author - that's seriously awesome, almost as though the author was herself attending!
- a diy kit for creating paper costumes for the characters - I personally didn't like it because I know for a fact that my book club won't be thrilled to do paper cutting. Although I really appreciated seeing what the clothes would have looked like in the book.

I wasn’t aware this was just the reading guide. I apologize for making the request. I cannot accurately rate the guide because I have nit yet read the book.

It’s so great to have this tool to be able to use for book club! Takes the work away and gives questions to discuss during book club!

This book club kit includes a letter from the author, discussion questions, a music playlist, a colouring page of the Doyle family seal, some paper dolls, and of course, some historical information about the genre and about an important location in the novel.
This is one of the more in-depth book club kits I've found and I really like it! The questions are interesting to either think or talk about after reading the novel and, the playlist was a great addition as well!

‘Mexican Gothic’ by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was one of my top reads for 2020 and I welcomed the opportunity to read and review this Book Club Kit from Penguin Random House Literary Resources.
It opens with a Letter to Readers from the author and then follows with a set of questions for book clubs/reading groups. I find such questions very useful to ‘prime the pump’ with respect to group discussion.
Further contents include a Spotify music playlist curated by Silvia Moreno-Garcia to accompany the novel, an article by the author on the real town that inspired her setting of Del Monte, and an image of the Doyle family seal.
Then follows a short essay titled ‘The Girl in the Mansion: How Gothic Romances Became Domestic Noirs’. In my younger years I was totally addicted to the Gothic romances of the mid-20th Century described in it; though I hadn’t made the connection between them and the current trend for domestic noirs. Still, I do rather miss the mist-shrouded mansions and the pretty frocks.
Of course, ‘Mexican Gothic’ has both of these elements and its protagonist, Noemi Taboada, is a glamorous 1950s socialite who loves to dress to the nines. So the final section provided a real retro treat: a paper doll of Noemi along with four full colour outfits for her, accompanied by descriptions and quotes from the novel.
Overall, a great resource for book clubs or a buddy read though who will get to keep Paper Noemi?

I loved getting to look through this fun Book Club Kit for Mexican Gothic by Silva Moreno-Garcia.
I enjoyed reading this book this year and think it would be a lot of fun to read with friends.
The packet is amazing with beautiful with artwork that compliments the book's cover art.
It includes great discussion questions and lots of notes from the author about the book and on the town on which the setting for Mexican Gothic is based. This kit is sure to make your book club night a perfectly themed success. It includes so much bonus info, as well as a great themed playlist and stunning paper dolls of Noemi and some of her stunning looks from the book.
Thanks to Penguin Random House Library Resources and NetGalley for the advance copy.

Very good discussion questions for your book club to discuss this book. Opens the door for many deep discussions.

This book club kit includes:
- an introductory letter to the reader
- 9 discussion questions
- a 22-song Spotify playlist
- a brief history lesson
- a picture of the Doyle family seal
- background about the gothic romance genre
- Noemi Taboada paper doll with 4 outfits
The book club kit is a supplemental booklet to go along with Mexican Gothic. It does NOT include a copy of the novel. What it DOES include is great quality. The booklet is beautiful, the letters, lessons, and other text are easy to read, interesting, and nicely composed. I especially liked the quotes and background that accompanied the paper doll clothes. The Noemi doll looks exactly how I envisioned her while reading the book. Love the playlist -- there are some great songs on there. The book club questions are not too academic but could have been a little deeper. They're a bit vague but great for sparking conversation over a glass of wine.
This is a perfect book club kit! Just add readers and refreshments!

This is my first book in a “horror genre” so I didn’t know what to expect. The first 2/3 of the book I really enjoyed and then the last 1/3 is when things get crazy. I found it easy to follow along and the author uses incredible words to describe the imagery of High Place and the grounds. I could vividly see the clothes that Noemi wears and what the description of the house was. Mexican Gothic does get a little gross sometimes and the descriptions of the smells got to be a bit much!
I liked this book enough, that I would absolutely try another horror book. I absolutely loved the stunning cover of this book. I’m excited to chat with the #novelideasbookclub next week about Mexican Gothic!

this was a fun little q&a to read! always interesting to read more from the author’s insight. there were cute little additions than others from this book club and i appreciated the effort and aesthetic of all these!

Noemi is a young socialite living in Mexico City and finding her path in life. When her cousin, Catalina, writes an odd and concerning letter to Noemi's father, he feels that Noemi should travel to Catalina and ensure she is okay.
Catalina lives in High Place with her new husband Virgil Doyle. Catalina met Virgil a year or so ago and they had a whirlwind romance and were married within a short period of time. Once married, Virgil whisked his new bride to his family estate deep in the country where power is limited and phone lines are non-existent.
When Noemi arrives to High Place, she's surprised by the isolation and the dreariness of the countryside. High Place is in near ruins with very little working electricity, thin walls, and many unused and decrepit rooms. The people of High Place are also strange - Francis, Virgil's cousin, is rail thin and pale as a ghost; his mother is very severe and rigid with a multitude of rules even her guest is expected to follow; the servants are nearly mute and completely ignore Noemi; and worst of all, Howard Doyle, the patriarch of the home and Virgil's father, is an ancient, ailing man with backward opinions and unfiltered, inappropriate speech.
Noemi quickly realizes something is amiss at High Place. Though the Doyle's Doctor claims Catalina is suffering from tuberculosis, none of her symptoms seem in line with the illness. Noemi herself begins to feel weird and have odd experiences at High Place. Her dreams become violent and life like, and her childhood sleepwalking habit seems to have resurfaced.
As Noemi begins to learn of the dark history of High Place, the surrounding mines, and the Doyle family, she's worried something evil lurks in the walls of High Place and runs through the blood of the Doyle family. It's possible something sinister, or even paranormal, is going on, and Noemi is determined to discover the truth and rescue her cousin.
This was such a beautifully written novel. High Place really came alive for me and I could feel the dampness, hear the silence, and sense the unease brooding around every corner. It was truly atmospheric and I loved the modern gothic feel.
I particularly loved the female characters in this novel. Noemi was vain, flirtatious, and flippant. However, she was also incredibly intelligent, a feminist far ahead of her time, independent, and fiercely loyal. I wanted more of the stories of Ruth, Agnes, and Alice and it would be incredible if the author ever chose to do a prequel!
I am drawn to books with darker, gothic themes and this one was wonderfully executed. It touched upon many relevant and important issues such as racism, classism, and sexism. It was thought provoking and the language was transportive.
If you love a slow burn mystery with dark and descriptive language, this one is definitely for you! The book club kit is also fantastic for a buddy read or book club discussion! There are lots of great prompts that really get the conversation flowing.

This Book Club Kit for Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic is a fantastic resource. It will come in handy when reading Mexican Gothic in a book club next month.
Thank you for providing this book club kit which includes discussion questions, a letter from the author, a playlist, paper doll and a few other resources.

These questions will prove very useful in a book club about Mexican Gothic. I have not used them for that, since I don't have (read) the book, but I will hang onto them for when I will.

Extremely excited to receive this book club kit just in time for next months club meeting. So many props and discussion questions it’s sure to be a hit.

I am loving this Book Club kit, it provides great additions like a letter from the author, discussion questions and even a little cut out doll with different outfits!
