I read The Midnight Club by Shane Goth through an educator lens.

I appreciated the bond that Becca & milly had together and their need to explore their house at night. Yong Ling's Kang's illustrations captured the books tone perfectly and each page has vibrant artwork.

The Midnight Club follows two siblings who get up after their parents are asleep and sneak around the house. The children are innocent and only slightly mischievous, they don't make a gigantic mess or sneak out of the house or anything. I enjoyed the art style of the blue illustrations with the warm yellow glow occasionally for emphasis. However, not much happens, there's not a lot of text because of the whole "you have to be silent to sneak around" and the repetitive coloring in the illustrations actually ended up making the story feel a bit duller than I was expecting it to be. I would have liked it more if there was a little less of the aforementioned elements to keep the book exciting. All in all, it's just a cute story about a bond between sisters and sharing little secrets with one another.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.

Charming sisters story. Milly can't wait to join her big sister, Becca, for a middle of the night adventure. Complete with secret signs and the obligatory silence, the adventure begins with sneaking by their parents' room. From there, the fun continues as a third member, their cat, joins them downstairs. The three of them enjoy a secret treat, discover a "monster," and play quiet games until one gets tired.
Readers will appreciate the joy. Parents will remember their own adventures and kids will think about plotting their own.

This was a cute story about two sisters that create a midnight club. Together with their cat they get out of bed after their parents are asleep and we get to follow the sisters as they create their Midnight Club. This story reminded me of my sister and all of the fun things we used to do when everyone else was asleep.

A great addition to a home library.

Milly and Becca sneak around the house at midnight with their cat. Simple things like eating jellybeans and sitting in a chair suddenly become a grand adventure. The text and charming watercolor illustrations perfectly capture the spirit of excitement and adventure the two sisters create with their clandestine club.

Loose watercolor illustrations in cool blues and occasional splashes of yellow light show two sisters exploring their house at night, trying on their parents’ clothing, eating jellybeans and making shadows puppets. It’s all harmless fun and I think young kids will revel in the idea of this kind of secret sneaking around (although I would caution listeners to never open their outside doors when they hear strange noises in the night, as these two youngsters do). This might be an activity best done with parental awareness, to keep an eye/ear out.

This will be a great circle time read! Milly and Becca go on a benign, imaginative midnight adventure--a tiny, harmless rebellion. They have fun seeing things they don't usually see during the day and doing (innocent) things they're not usually allowed to do.

The text is full of wonderfully expressive words to make the story exciting and expand budding vocabularies. The kids can have fun imitating the sounds of the girls sneaking around and the light suspense will help keep attention on the story.

The illustrations are detailed and complement the mood of the story beautifully.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
