The Accident

Heartbreaking, Engrossing, and Life Changing. This is a book that every parent of a teenager should read along with the teenager. What a wonderful way have a discussion with their teenager about touchy subjects such as harming oneself, drugs, telling the truth and being a part of the family unit. What can happen when poor choices are made.

A horrible car accident. A six year old girl is in a coma fighting for her life. A devastated teenage girl, the driver of the car and her family. The story of how these two dysfunctional families found their way through this sad event and reclaimed their lives.

It is a story of families, feelings, anger, grief, forgiveness and guilt. A story of people taking a long look at their lives and taking steps to heal themselves and their families.

I know that this story and the events described within, the characters, the problems and the social topics revealed will stay with me for a long time. I will not soon forget this story. I recommend this book.

Thanks to Kate Hewitt, Bookouture, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy of the book for my honest review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars.

Ive read lots of this author‘s books and enjoyed them all. They all follow a similar pattern; happiness, tragedy, sadness, twist, reconciliation. However this doesn’t detract from the stories.

The writing engages you with each character to such an extent that you really feel for what they are going through.

The ‘twist’ was a tad obvious with this story hence the drop of the star however it kept me hooked from start to finish.

My Daughter's Mistake is told from the point of view of two mothers. Ellen, whose daughter has crashed her car and run a young girl over in the process and Jenna, whose daughter is the young girl who has been hurt. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that for both women, this isn't a straightforward accident and both sides seem to be hiding things. The more that we learn about Jenna and Ellen's lives we see that everything is far from perfect for either of them.
While this is a story about an accident and the aftermath, it's also about the lives people lead and the things that they do to try and protect themselves and the ones that they love. Jenna has spent her life keeping people distant, which is hardly surprising when we learn of all that she has faced as she grew up. For Ellen, it's been about the differences between the life she knew growing up in an academic environment and the world that her husband grew up in.
Parts of this book are horrifying. The idea that you might have to move to a different hospital because your insurance won't cover the treatment, or worry about being sued is just unimaginable. The idea of dealing with a child that might not recover from such a serious accident and be worrying about how you might pay for their treatment.
This was a gripping read and although I had an idea of what had happened at the accident (which I was right about) I still couldn't put it down until I'd read it all.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Another great read from Kate Hewitt.. Ellen's daughter Maddie is already struggling with her health when she is involved in terrible accident when a young girl is knocked down while Maddie is driving. The story is told by Ellen as she tries to come to terms with what has happened and also from the little girls mother Jenna who has had a difficult life and now faces another trauma. Is Maddie telling the truth about the accident or is their more too the story. Two mother's who are fighting for their daughter's lives who have been brought together by the tragedy.

The unthinkable happens - your teenage daughter who should be at home calls you crying saying “mom, please come.” There’s been a horrible car accident involving a 6 year old little girl and your daughter seems to be involved somehow. This book told from 2 different moms POV’s. It was packed with lots of gut wrenching scenes. I’m not even sure what I would do in a case like this. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.

Wow, this was a tense read. However, I was fully immersed in the story since I felt like I was in it. Hewitt captures so many emotions so accurately. It was so real and believable. The rage, fear, and exhaustion. I was fully invested in the story, yet had to step back and feel relieved that none of these things were happening to me. It’s a heavy read, but a worthwhile story.

This book was filled to the rafters with emotions. Better be warned! You might have to stock up on tissues.

I don’t really know which kind of phone call I would dread the most: the one where my child would be the victim of an accident or the one where my child would be responsible for said accident. I think they are both nightmares come true.

Which one of those children will need the most time to recover: the one with the physical wounds or the one with the emotional ones. I think the emotional impact might sometimes be overlooked. The guild and the shock the offender has to live with can be as life-threatening. The accident is something that happens in a flash of a moment, but the consequences are very dire and will leave deep scars for both parties and their families.

Being loyal is a great thing, but at what price…?

This is a story about how broken families can be mended and how two families who are each others opposites can bond because they have to deal with the same tragedy. It’s true that even the darkest clouds have a silver lining.

A great book. 5 stars

Thank you

MY DAUGHTER’S MISTAKE is another unforgettable novel by KATE HEWIT. It is the heartbreaking story of Ellen and Brian Wilkinson’s troubled seventeen year old daughter, Maddie, who hits Jenna Miller’s six year old daughter, Amy Rose, with her car. This is a scandal that has everyone speculating and even taking sides in the small community of Milford.
The author takes us through the emotions of all those who are involved, especially those of the two mothers who desperately want to help their daughters, but who also feel that they are somehow responsible for this tragedy and that, if they had been better mothers, it would not have happened.
Jenna Miller has had a rough childhood. She is a single mother living in the poor side of town, working two jobs and still not managing to make ends meet. Her first reaction is to hate Ellen, the fashionable university professor, until she realizes that her anger is not helping in any way.
Ellen is a sociology professor who lectures, amongst other subjects, on the sociology of the family, which is pretty ironic when she thinks of her own family problems. She sees her young students as “all children trying to live in a grown up world.”
The author takes us through the characters’ emotions and fears and we see the effect of the accident on each one of them. There is also a sense of hope in spite of everything.
It is altogether a lovely and inspirational read, and one I highly recommend.
I was given free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bookouture. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

I will read anything by this author and usually I have to disregard all other responsibilities so that I can finish the book! I enjoy that she takes social issues and shows both sides behind the story. In this story, there is a car accident that involves a teenage girl and a six year old. The story is told from the perspective of both moms who are struggling with the emotions behind the accident. The author has hit it out of the park again with this book. There is a little bit of swearing in the book.

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this book and would read books from this author again.
Ellen’s daughter, Maddie knocks down six year old Amy Rose to the horror of her mother Jenna. What follows is the impact on all of the people involved and the impact to their relationships. The book is written, in alternating chapters, from the POV of the mothers. I liked how each mother questions their responses and behaviours as the situation unfolds. It did make me cry as the whole situation was realistic this wasn’t a happy ever ending story as it’s often not in real life.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Two mothers, each with a daughter who they love and care for with great care. They live in the same town in New Hampshire. But that is where the similarities end.
Ellen is a college professor in Milford, the quiet pretty town where they live. She is married and has two children, a daughter called Maddie, aged seventeen and a younger son aged twelve. Her home is in the elite area of town and her family have a lovely home, nice clothes and meals and they can afford treats, takeaways or restaurant meals. Their children are well looked after and loved. Maddie drives a car and has passed her driving test. She drives very well and is careful.
Jenna is a single mother. Her daughter is called Amy Rose and she is six years old. Their rented house is on the other side of town in an area that is totally different from Ellen’s area. She works two jobs to support herself and her daughter, but she is often short of money and life is not easy for them. Jenna is determined to be there for her daughter and bring her up knowing she is loved, secure and cared for. They are a unit of two and live happily together.
One warm autumn day everything charges for Ellen and Jenna. In a sudden flash it is all over. Maddie has had a driving accident. She runs into Amy Rose who is very seriously injured. Her blood is all over the road. Maddie dials for an ambulance which takes Amy Rose to hospital where she is put into an induced coma. Jenna is distraught and attentive, hoping that her daughter will wake up one day. Nobody knows whether she will live or die, it is in the balance and all they can do is wait.
Ellen and Jenna have never met before, but now these two mothers have something else in common. They will both do anything to protect their daughters. The town gossips have something to talk about. They pick the bones bare about who is responsible for this tragedy. How did it happen? Was Maddie to blame? Where was Jenna when the accident happened? Soon they take their sides against each mother, whose lives change forever. The chaotic Butterfly Effect causes ripple after ripple.
The police investigators are on the case immediately. They are asking questions almost daily, trying to apportion the blame and make a case to whoever was guilty. The two mothers are each living through terrible days. Maddie is in bits, feeling guilty and worried about what will happen. This is the story of two mothers and two daughters. It is the story of what will happen next.
I loved this story and the storytelling so much. I read full of trepidation that one of the characters I liked so much may have been guilty. I identified with both mothers as their trauma increased in intensity. I already knew both mothers were keeping secrets. I felt so sorry for Maddie, even though I knew she had accepted the blame. I also loved each of the family backstories which shined a brilliant light on what would happen next. Jenna was my favourite character: flawed, loving, loyal, angry and like a Tigress. I loved the issues raised that included alcoholism, abuse, mental health issues, suicide and criminality. This is a novel you must not miss. It is a 5* hit, enjoyable, tense and fast paced.
I was thrilled to receive a complimentary copy of this novel from publisher Bookouture through my membership of NetGalley. Thank you for my copy. These are my own honest opinions without any outside influences. I recommend this story as excellent in every way.

This was an emotional rollercoaster of a read and my first by this author but won’t be my last. This was a gripping read of what really happened the day Ellen’s daughter had a car accident along with a backstory of how all of the Characters and lives intertwined and how events of the past shape the future. The author also covered a lot of real life issues such as eating disorders and drug and alcohol abuse in a very sensitive and informative way also highlighting these problems that are sometimes not brought out into the open yet suffered by many families.

The story also showed how friendship and comfort can sometimes be found in the unlikeliest of places.

Two mothers. Two daughters. One tragic accident that reveals a myriad of personal and socio-economic issues threatening to take two families to the breaking point.

This book is a tour de force of human emotions. It is an intensely, gripping roller coaster ride from start to finish, although I guessed several of the “twists” well before they played out on the pages. The characters are disconcerting, sympathetic and realistic. I was engaged from the first page and though the story lagged in some parts with repetition of the interpersonal dynamics, I found it a compelling read. It was gratifying to experience the transformation of the two mothers and their relationships, however some of the events leading to the resolution seemed a bit extreme.

My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Ellen gets the phone call that every parent dreads that her daughter has been in an accident ,It is a heartbreaking story not just concerning the fallout from the accident and as you read further, the backstory of the main characters is revealed and how their lives have been affected . It is an emotional book so not trying to ruin it but do have the tissues nearby.

“We’re all too broken “

Wow. This book tore my heart out and then put it back together.
Jenna and Ellen live in the same town, and are living the same nightmare. However they couldn’t be more different….
This book is told in alternating chapters… Jennas young daughter is in a coma from being hit by a car that Ellen’s daughter was driving. This book had a lot going on and at times I loved and disliked the same characters.
Each family was living their own nightmare and each mom was fighting for their own daughter!
Yet somehow knowing each other and sharing the same nightmare changed each character. “Can good things come from all this suffering “. You will just have to read ( with lots of tissues) and see .

The phone call that every parent dreads comes to Ellen from her daughter Maddie!
Maddie was in a car crash!
But... it is way more complicated than that! She has hit a little girl!
Where was Amy Rose's mother while this little girl was in the middle of the street?
Where does the blame lie? Will Amy Rose survive? Will Maddie go to prison?

This is an intense, emotional story of secrets, dysfunction, family, friendship, heartache, heartbreak and hope that I read quickly to learn of the characters fate.
I definitely recommend this book! It is good!

2.5 stars. Fairly slow paced. The big reveal/twist was easily predicted. Would be rated less if not for the relatable characters.

This was a great emotional dilemma read. Love these sorts of books! I loved the emotions this book puts the reader through. Stunning absolutely stunning! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A heartbreaking and emotional story about two mothers linked by tragedy; Jenna, whose little girl Amy Rose is in a coma after being hit by a car, and Ellen, whose daughter Maddie was driving that car. As Amy Rose clings to life and Maddie becomes more withdrawn and evasive about the accident, both mothers are driven by the innate need to protect their daughters.

As a mother, this book packed an emotional punch and had me wondering what I would do in the same circumstances. Jenna and Ellen are both beautifully characterized, flawed but loving, and it’s easy to understand their motivations even when you don’t agree with their actions. Highly recommended for fans of women’s fiction featuring moral dilemmas, a la Jodi Picoult.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
