WOW was there a lot to love here. This is much more of a remix of (hence the title) than a retelling of Robin Hood, with just enough little nods and elements to the source material (as well as a few references to the Disney version as well). Safi has moved Robin Hood out of England and into Jerusalem during the height of the third crusade. We even get glimpses of some of the big historical players in Richard the Lionheart, Saladin, and Isabella, queen of Jerusalem (who plays a big role in this book and is such a fascinating character. This time, the merry band of thieves is led by Rahma al-Hud, who alongside her sister, fled the sacking of Akko at their commander's order. Left to their own devices, Rahma is determined to get them both somewhere safe (while her sister wants to head to Jerusalem to carry on fighting) and along the way, they're joined by other travelers. Things heat up when Rahma accidentally steals a horse from the queen of Jerusalem, and from there, the band of rogues that rob from the rich and give to the poor are born. The characters were fantastic, I loved all of them, though I did feel that the plot kind of meandered at times and that the group spent a lot of time reacting to things instead of taking action, until the end. Otherwise, this is an enjoyable story with the heart of Robin Hood shared in a new way.
