Emotions get a bad rap. They’re seen as distracting us from our higher, “rational” selves. The new book Emotional shoes that they are fundamental to making good decisions, connecting with others, and functioning in the world.
This is the best kind of science book—one that makes me see my world differently. It's packed with research and fun to read.
I was particularly fascinated by the way emotions guide thought. Anxiety leads to a pessimistic cognitive bias, for example, while happiness supports #creativity.
Mlodinow writes, “Control over and knowledge of one’s emotional state is what is most important for professional and personal success.”
And how do we control our emotions? He offers three suggestions:
Acceptance
Reappraisal
Expression—talking or writing (!!!) about your emotional state
I have already found this book useful and applied its lessons in my life. Maybe you’ll do the same.
