The pairing of AB and Matthew was captivating, drawing me in and making me feel like I was reading a fanfic. Fanfics, on the other hand, are often unedited and contain words atop words, meaning that readers must read between the lines to find the best content. This was no exception; the content was quite good, but there was a great deal of extra material to digest, some of which was quite confusing. Ultimately, I was satisfied with the ending, and I am glad I did not give up on the story. I can understand why people would enjoy it.

Fairly cute, but nothing too memorable unfortunately. Good representation and decent characters, though.

*Big Thanks to Stephanie Hoyt, the publisher- NineStar Press, and Netgalley for an ARC of this book. All thoughts and comments are my own.*

I am always on the lookout for new paranormal and fantasy series and authors to read. When I read the blurb about finding a magical bondmate between a burgeoning hockey player and a rock star? Plus bisexual representation? Well, I was all the way sold

The Magic Between houses a world of magic that is varied and sometimes, in very special circumstances, you can find your exact match, your bondmate. In a random, strangers passing each other in the bathroom sort of encounter, A.B. and Matthew discover each other.

Overall, I found the book to be super cute with relatively low angst. I am a huge sucker for a sexual discovery romance. The slow progression from friends to more was wonderfully done. The graphics included really added a level of connection between what the characters look like and the storyline. The social media and fan spaces also added another layer of connection.

If I had to say one thing about the book that I didn't really jive with was the pacing. Sometimes we sat in a bunch of internal dialogue and honestly, there needed to but just a smidge of something to drive the plot forward.

I am super happy about this book and look forward to more from the author.

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this book.

This was a cute story and I didn't want it to end! I would have loved some more detailed world building because it sounded so interesting but that's ok. This was more of a guilty pleasure cute romance anyways.

Let's start with the good: This book has really great bisexual representation. When you read something with such excellent rep, it becomes so obvious how bad a lot of others are, so it deserves all the stars for that aspect.

Now for the bad: I wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't had an ARC. I'm not mad about it, because there were plenty of things I enjoyed, but those were not the things the author chose to focus on.

I liked the original prologue setting up the magic system and the way the MCs first meet when their magic responds to each other, but it goes downhill very quickly from there.

Interestingly, that prologue that I enjoyed so much was mostly removed for publication after the ARC feedback from readers who found it too confusing. I did not find it confusing at all, but I like books with complex magic systems. This book is set in a universe with a very cool magic system -- that it mostly ignores. To the point that they removed most of the information from the prologue, which I'm pretty sure was the only place most of that information was found -- and then people liked it better??? AKA: How you know you're not the target audience for a book 😂

So, yeah, this book mostly ends up being about the stress of coming out as a hockey player, which just wasn't what I was expecting. (Especially after that prologue, so removing it was probably a good call to re-direct expectations.) I love hockey books, but not when homophobia is the main focus.

I will say this for it: It doesn’t look at hockey with rose-colored glasses. It doesn’t sugarcoat how straight-up homophobic the league is.

It also doesn’t get intensely personal. What they experience in their personal lives is very supportive, so it's more homophobia as a concept than an experience.

I waited too long to write this review, so the rest is just going to be bullet points from my notes:

>Seem to be able to speak volumes with a single look from someone they’ve just met

>Info dump/clunky exposition but with a character's background not world-building

>Repetitive

>Weirdness with the anxiety about being exposed magic-wise

>The syntax is off, the logic is off

>It’s safe to have a crush on this straight boy because he’s going to leave/I can’t have a sexuality crisis because he doesn’t want a relationship because it’s too much of a hassle ??? DUMB

>Characters introduced by name but you have no idea where they are; thought Houston was just part of the tour for like two chapters and then found out that’s where he lives; barely even realize the guy is a hockey player until he’s freaking out about the homophobia in the league (before he’s ever even kissed a guy); I was pretty far into the book before I realized how old one of the characters is and that his Big Traumatic Break Up happened when he was 16

>Repetitive

>The writing didn’t work for me

>Don’t even know what kind of music he sings

>Liked the illustrated tweets

>Chaotic

I can't recommend it, but I'm very sure I'm not the target audience.

I enjoyed this book, and liked most of the characters, but felt while reading that something was missing. The characters were likable but there wasn't any point in the story where I felt like I would die for them. I was bored a few times while reading too. However, even though this gets only three stars, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it to people who love fantasy romcom vibes.

I really enjoyed this premise, it was a bit slow in places, but I really loved the characters and the magic system was very interesting !!

This had some really interesting world=building, but more than that I really enjoyed the relationship in here. Matthew and AB really suited each other, and I loved the way their romance was impacted by the world-building in addition to just the romance in general.

I thought that this book was very interesting. One thing I loved was the conversations about mental health, because I feel like that helps destigmatize that topic. I thought the magic system and elements of fantasy made this story more unique. I felt like the two main characters weren’t one-dimensional, but were very interesting, and I really enjoyed reading about them. I haven’t seen too many people talk about this book, but I believe it definitely deserves more attention.

Sadly, this book is a DNF for me. The reason I am giving it a few stars is because I did love the premise and the characters. What really threw me out of the book was the writing. It felt so much like something I could find on AO3 that it made me just want to go and read something on there instead.

I did enjoy this book even though I wasn't sure what demographic or genre this is being categorised as. I really liked how this could be put under YA or NA, or LGBTQIA+ or Queer. In any case, I enjoyed it!
I wanted to pick this up because it had Queer Romance as the main tag, but also the addition of music and pop stars, sports stars, and of course, magic in a real world setting! I absolutely love fantasy that appears to be the normal real world, except for That One Thing that makes it fantasy.

This story follows AB Cerise, a bisexual pop star who is a little jaded about love and anxiety-ridden. Matthew Hellman-Levoie is a main draft pick goalie for the NHL as he is part of a hockey dynasty. He is a straight cinnamon roll sweetheart who is on the lookout for his magic Bondmate. The two meet and sparks fly. Literally. They are magical sparks!

These two characters were so sweet together and felt so perfectly written for each other, even in the way they are opposites of each other. They complement each other in many ways and I feel that there delightful slow-burn romance was really well written. I loved their interactions were presented, especially with regards to consent.

There was some great representation presented in this book, which we see in the main characters but also in the other charcters, who were really fun to meet.

The magic system was really interesting, although a little confusing at times, but by the time I finished the book I totally understood the magic system. I feel that the magic system or world could be used in further books, and I would be interested to read more books set in this world.

The only quibbles I would have about this book is the pacing is a bit slow in places as it is such a charcter driven plot. The writing style was also something that took me a little while to get into and I felt that a stricter editor would have made the manuscript tighter and then the pacing issues may have been resolved, too.
The other issue was that I wasn't sure if it was YA or NA, due to how spicy things got and also the level of the dialogue of the characters was a little naive.

Overall, I enjoyed this book because I just loved the two main charcters. The Bisexual awakening, use of social media and fan spaces, as well as the illustrations, were really great. I personally would consider this a YA book, due to the fade-to-black on the spicy scenes. - you know I love a bit of spice!

I love it when a book takes me totally by surprise and that’s exactly what happened when I read The Magic Between. A.B and Matthew were total opposites, which was exactly the point.

In this world created by Stephanie Hoyt, opposite magic seeks opposite magic and when they find each other and Bond can form. But that’s just a myth, or so A.B. had convinced himself. Matthew was a true believer in that myth though and he had spent a lifetime searching for his true Bond. A.B. wasn’t the only one who thought that finding a true Bond was just a fairytale. Those closest to Matthew had seen him become disappointed over and over again. They were just as skeptical as A.B. when Matthew told them that this time was different. Because of his type of magic, Matthew could see what others couldn’t and what he saw and felt when he was around A.B. was like nothing he had ever experienced before. He just had to convince him that it was real.

A.B. had other things to consider. Being around Matthew threatened to expose his own magic to the world and he wasn’t ready to do that. Because of events in his past, he may never be ready. The more time they spent together and the more he started to trust Matthew, the more he started to think that there might just be something to this Bond thing…. maybe.

The Magic Between was such a sweet story and I loved watching A.B. and Matthew get closer. Matthew was so patient and he trusted A.B. just as much as A.B. grew to trust him. The supporting characters were great too and added a lot to the story and the world building. There were a few bumps along the way, but in the end both A.B. and Matthew got the HEA that they deserved. ❤

I did enjoy the story and like the magic of the world. I think my main problem was it wasn't very exciting, The Bond was a little anticlimatic. In saying that I did like the soft, fluffiness of the story and the lack of contrived miscommunication.
The way hockey and fame while coming out and being bi was done really well. It felt mostly realistic with a dash of over optimism (which I'm fine with).
AB and Matthew were a cute couple and had some fun banter (though not the best I've read). They did feel very similar to Alex and Henry from Red, White and Royal Blue but different enough.
I do wonder if Stephanie Hoyt writes fanfiction because although these characters were definitely not Dean and Cas from supernatural there was a couple minor tropes from Destial fanfiction that popped up ie character liking pie over cake, "can i put a bell on you", use of angel etc. But it honestly isn't enough for me to think it started as destial fanfiction just that Stephanie Hoyt might be a destial fan :)

The beginning of this book is a giant info dump. It talks all about the different types of magics and their percentages in the population and it was a little strange. I feel like it would have been better if this information was introduced throughout the book. ***The author has announced that thanks to advice from early readers she will be changing this prologue portion so it will most likely be even better.***

However after that, this book was just pure fun to read.
LGBTQ, Coming out, sports romance, celebrity romance, true love/bond-mates, and magic!

The main characters go through serious heart wrenching real life struggles and it makes them so much more real because of it. The book discusses some hard topics like coming out as LGBTQ in a sport that is homophobic and how the media can make life a living hell for a bisexual just trying to find love. I love love love how even BEFORE Matthew’s parents and hockey team mates know he is gay/bi they are fighting to rid the National Hockey League of homophobia.

It's a pretty cliche read and follows a lot of tropes but it acknowledges that and it 100% works for the story. The plot is well-placed and interesting and I really enjoyed the writing style.

DNF

I requested this one because I thought it seemed interesting but I didn't like the execution as much as I hoped I would. The quality of the writing and the bad worldbuilding were dealbreakers for this novel. This might get better later on but it just wasn't for me.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK NOW! There are not enough words in the world to express how precious this story is, I swear!
If you are looking for a healthy relationship, full of magic and happy moments, so tender that it makes you feel butterflies in your stomach and leaves you with a huge smile all day, this is your book 💗

The story centers on AB, a pop star with obsessive-compulsive disorder who has the ability to turn invisible, and Matthew, a hockey player who is the first NHL goalie prospect who has the ability to see things others can't.
Both are completely opposite, they come from different worlds, they dream of different things and it would be almost impossible for their worlds to cross, but when the universe knocks on their doors and gives indications that they are soul mates it's impossible to escape.

AB doesn't believe in soul mates and thinks having a relationship in the public eye is complicated or impossible, so when he runs into Matthew and realizes he's the only one who can see him when he's Invisible, his first thought is to run away and deny the possibility that something could happen. Because it's impossible, right? Having a soul mate is just a story, a legend.
However, Matthew does not think that, since he was a child he believes with all his heart that there is someone out there who will make his magic react and with whom he will be happy but, being straight, he is surprised to think that perhaps AB is his soulmate, that maybe he is the one. But how could he be if Matthew is straight?

Welcome to the sweetest and most wonderful drama in the world~.

I'm not gonna to lie, when I started the book it was a bit difficult for me to find the rhythm because the prologue is full of information that is suddenly thrown at you and, at least in my case, it was difficult to remember, but once you get past the beginning the story takes strength and is THE MOST PRECIOUS THING IN THE WORLD, I SWEAR!
Matthew and AB are the best couple in the world, they have such a healthy relationship that makes you feel immense happiness and peace! They both complement each other, help each other, understand each other and care about each other in such a sweet and special way... It's no joke when I tell you I'm obsessed with them 💗

Matthew is all that is good in this world 💗. The boy is super sweet and considerate, he is romantic, optimistic, enthusiastic, sensitive, empathic and he has a heart of gold.
Throughout the book he shows us over and over again how thoughtful and precious he is, not only in the way he treats his family or his sister Maddie, but in the way he cares for and supports AB.
He not only understands that AB doesn't believe in Bonds like he does, but also respects his decision not to date or have a relationship, and tries to understand and help AB with her obsessive compulsive disorder. For him the intrusive thoughts that sometimes plague AB are not silly, they are really important because they are important to AB and AB is important to him.

The way Matthew takes care of him, without really being aware of it, is so wonderful and lovable that during the book all I could think about is how precious Matthew is and how lucky AB is to have someone who loves him so much.

Also, the relationship that Matthew has with his family and with his twin Maddie is incredible! They trust each other, they are like best friends, and although sometimes they have problems, they are always there for each other. It's really refreshing to read about such a nice sibling relationship and a family that isn't horrible with their kids (as they often are in books). Here Matthew's family is a love and their relationship is so precious and so tender that it only makes me think that Matthew is a gift from the literary gods to us because WE DON'T DESERVE HIM! He's a love with his sister, a love with his family and friends and a love with AB. His hockey teammates are right: MATTHEW COULD CHARM ANYONE, HE IS A BABY THAT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS 💗. No wonder Maddie and their family take such good care of him, he's a sweetheart 💗.
(Is it obvious that I would give my life for him? BECAUSE I WOULD! I love him so much 💗)

On the other hand AB is a little sunshine full of clouds that hide his light and hurt him all day. He's adorable, considerate, detail-oriented, fanciful, but he can also be very depressed, insecure and somewhat paranoid. AB is a complicated character but no less lovable or precious for that. The poor guy is struggling with his anxiety and fear that someone other than his friends or family will find out about his gift or the possibility that they can control it. He has been going to therapy and has been able to work on his disorder and his anxiety but a lot of times his head is filled with intrusive thoughts and I can honestly understand that.

AB is a character you can relate to (at least I do). He is a love, extremely sweet and considerate boy, funny, with a big heart but who tends to hide himself for fear of being hurt.
During the book we see AB fight his anxiety and have such a beautiful development and evolution that the only thing I can say is that I adore him with all my heart and I am very proud of the progress he made💗.

Also, I want to mention that the way the author show AB and his anxiety and how she portrayed Matthew's journey of self-discovery was beautiful, great job there, it's one of the few books where in my opinion these topics have been handled in a perfect way.
Kudos to Stephanie Hoyt, too, for writing LIFE'S MOST BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. I swear to you, I can see AB and Matthew together having a beautiful relationship based on love, trust and respect that can last a lifetime. I see them getting married, having children and being old together AND I EVEN SEE THEM TOGETHER IN THEIR NEXT LIVES!

They are The Holy Grail of relationships and I won't stop saying it, they are wonderful 💗. They both love each other, respect each other, AND NOT ONLY THAT! They TRUST each other in a way I've only seen in my favorite trilogy (All for the game). They love and respect each other so much that I can bet my life neither of them would EVER cross each other's boundaries under any circumstances. It is not just that they love or respect each other, it is that they help each other, complement each other, and have very good communication, they are super frank and sincere with each other and they solve any problem they may have TOGETHER.

The book also touches on topics such as homophobia, the scandals that celebrities have and how the media and fans twist the truth, even homophobia in the NHL and in sports in general.
And although I feel that the universe lacked a bit of development, it is a small bump in the road because everything else is WONDERFUL.
There are scenes where they explain how each character sees the world thanks to his gift and those scenes (among others) have such beautiful and poetic prose that you are simply amazed at the image it presents to you. The way Matthew sees the world, for example, is so colorful and so precious that, without lying, I want to look at his paintings to see the colors and the world as he sees them.

The book is a amazing, basically, and I'll never get over it.
A few minutes ago I finished reading it and I want to read it again! PLS GIVE IT A CHANCE! The story is wonderful.

The Arc of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you so much!

The Magic Between by Stephanie Hoyt

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Ninestar Press LLC and I am leaving this review voluntarily

In a world where everyone has magic coursing through them, legend says magic itself craves a mate. Legend says those with opposite magics have the greatest chance of forming the unbreakable Bond it desires.

A.B. Cerise is an obsessive compulsive pop star with the ability to turn invisible. He’s an out bisexual with absolutely no belief in Bonds. He has a love-bruised heart, thinks dating in the spotlight is a hassle at best and a nightmare at worst, and has no intention of going through it all over again.

This book just didn't work for me - in many places I considered giving up on this book as I was struggling with the writing style. I am aware that the introduction to the magic has been changed for the published version, but for me it was difficult to follow. I just felt like I was missing something - when I was 15% into the book I actually went back to the start as I was convinced I had missed a key piece of information but unfortunately this still didn't help me.

I have seen many raving reviews for this book, so I do feel that this could be a book that people love - but I just didn't connect with the writing/characters.

Rating 3/5
