This book delivers on the creepy factor x 10. The People Next Door is another book by Keri Beevis that draws you in from the first page. As you read it, the book is so well written, you can see and hear everything and everyone. The characters come to life in your mind and you either like them and root for them, distrust them or you may just have that feeling crawling up your back about them, but you will not forget them. Ellie is happy moving into her new home but little by little things feel wrong. Most of the narrative is centered around Elli's new country home and this intensifies the sense of impending doom to the point where the house itself feels dangerous with a life of its own. As the tension escalates, those feelings of dread she feels quickly is reflected upon the reader. We know something bad might happen but the reader tries to figure out where/when it will develop and then all of a sudden it is there. Grounded and expertly crafted prose that suspense escalates until your skin crawls, then you are horrified by what she discovers. One of my favorite characters is Poppy and love the development of the name.

This is a definite recommend for a thriller. Pick this one up and you will be reading way into the night.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Dreamscape Media for this ARC.

Wow! The People Next Door by Keri Beevis, is one of the creepiest psychological thriller's I have ever read! Ellie and Ash move into a big house in the countryside, where soon they meet their new friendly, seemingly harmless neighbor, Benjamin. Hoping for a fresh start in a new area, they are thrilled to get the house for a bargain, Ellie reasoning it is cheap because there is a lot of work to do on it. However, Ash has held something back from Ellie, a big secret that has to do with the house and it's former occupants.

Little by little, strange things start happening and new discoveries are being made in the house.. Ellie becomes more fearful, but she honestly doesn't know if her fear is real or imagined.

This book totally hooked me from the start, it's gripping, well-paced, twisty, with a WOW ending (as in wow... didn't see that coming!) There were parts of the book I figured out early on, but this did not take enjoyment away from the overall story..

I was privileged to listen to the audio version recording, and unequivocally, I highly recommend the audiobook. I fell in love with the narrator Shakira Shute! Extremely talented in her expressions and character voices - completely believable! She definitely has a part in making this good book, great! I would listen to any book she chose to narrate.

The one bit of criticism I have to offer is the use of foul language. The swearing and f*bombs were used liberally throughout the story. Although, I appreciate that swearing is used to convey intensity of emotion, I don't appreciate the use of so much of it in regular vocabulary and conversation.

Awesome
When Ellie and Ash move into a beautiful old house in rural Norfolk, England, they believe they’ve found their perfect home. Intrigued by the people next door, Ellie befriends shy but sweet Benjamin and, as time goes by, becomes ever more curious about his elusive sister, Virginia. But when Ellie discovers that her new home has a darker past and that Ash has been keeping secrets, what she thought was a perfect life in the countryside begins to unravel. Is her best friend to be trusted, are the new neighbors all that they really seem, and why is her new puppy so obsessed with the cellar? Most worrying of all is the mystery of what happened to the former occupants of the house. When Ash goes away on business and strange things begin to happen, Ellie’s paranoia goes into overdrive. But are these all coincidences—or is she really in danger?
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for giving me an advanced copy.

I listened to the audiobook version of this and it was slow to pick up in the beginning. However, I kept with it and even though the story did feel like it was dragging on and on, I didn’t want to stop listening to it. I really wanted to know what was going on in the house and how things would play out. I the end, I’m so glad I stuck with it but I did not see the ending coming at all. The last 45 minutes of the story had me on the edge of my seat and I needed to keep going to see if my theories were right.

I discovered Keri Beevis last year & ever since then I’ve been pushing Every Little Breath into the hands of as many people as possible. I then went and devoured most of her backlist (check Hoopla) So when I saw The People Next Door listed on NetGalley I hit request real fast.

I went into this book completely blind & I’m recommending you do the same so I’m not going to talk about the plot. This is a creepy psychological thriller so if you scare easily, this might not be the book for you. I saw someone describe this as atmospheric & Hitchcockian and that is spot on. I won’t say why because it would spoil the entire story. There’s a few directions the plot could’ve gone as the story is setup in part one. Once part 2 hits, you start to see which direction it’s going. You probably won’t be shocked at the reveals, but you also won’t be disappointed in them. This creep fest was a total winner for me. 5/5

Thank you so much to Keri Beevis, NetGalley & Dreamscape for providing an advanced listeners copy in exchange for an honest review.

We were hit by another snow storm in Colorado since New Year's Eve/Day. I can't think of a better way to keep myself entertained during this freezing early days of the year by listening to a suspenseful thriller. Kept me awake at night, because I'm glued to the story, not because of the howling wind and falling snow outside.

A couple moved to an old house in the countryside. A cat paid them a visit one night. It belongs to the neighbor who lives behind them. Something sinister happened to that house a few years ago. The boyfriend has been keeping secrets from her. And the new neighbors are being too neighborly it seemed dubious.

The narrator, Shakira Shute, has a soft voice, however she fits the character she is narrating especially for Benjamin. She did sound sinister with a patronizing tone that perfectly fits Benjamin's character. I didn't mind that there's only one narrator. She changes her voice very well that I can distinguish one character from the other. Brought the book to life especially the exchanges between Ellie and Benjamin. She also did a good job with the Australian accent for both Ash and Pete.

I received a copy of this audiobook via NetGalley. Thank you to Dreamscape Media for allowing access to the title and I'm reviewing it voluntarily.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media, NetGalley and the author for an ARC of the audiobook version of this book!

Growing up, one always imagines being financially able to take that leap in buying a new house. Moving can be very daunting, but just imagine moving to a place where you only have one family nearby for company. Would that feeling of getting away into seclusion and potentially connecting better with one’s self overpower your want to connect and garner a relationship with multiple neighbors?

I have personally been very lucky with my neighbors throughout my life; those who send back a plate full of baked goods rather than an empty dish or help shovel the snow on the sidewalk. Perhaps living in a single family dwelling is preferred, but living more along the lines of being the only family for miles is quite the opposite.

Moving into a new place should be exciting. You get to redecorate and really make it your own. This story starts off as normal as any other couples first home together, but it does take quite a turn. The audio version really allowed us to get into the mindset of the characters as well as provide tone for the characters speech patterns and ticks.

Not to give any spoilers, but the physical, emotional and mental journeys that these characters take you on is quite a rollercoaster. I will leave by saying that it pays to trust animals as they can sense things and smell things better than we as humans can.

4.5* This book follows a couple who move from the city to a quaint solice countryside. They invite their couple friend's over to a house warming dinner and all hell breaks loose from there. Later, they meet the couple who live close to them, and boy does it get creepy.
On top of the weird couple, their new dog seems to be obsessed with the cellar.
This gives me horror/thriller movie on Netflix vibes and I can honestly say I was entertained all the way to the end. In fact I am going to purchase this and give it to my friend. Its THAT good.

It’s the start of something wonderful, or at least it should be. Ellie and her boyfriend Ash are moving into a gorgeous old house in Norfolk. Ellie intends to spruce up the house and garden, perhaps even add fish to the little pond on the property. She’s initially charmed by new neighbor, Benjamin and his reclusive sister, Virginia, but then Ellie discovers that her new home has a less than perfect past and that the man she loves is keeping secrets from her. Suddenly the lovely countryside seems more like an isolated prison, her home a spooky house with something very off in the cellar. I love a scary story, and it’s rare that I can read or listen to one that really creeps me out. Beevis and Shute both had me checking under my bed after enjoying this creepy thriller

The People Next Door follows Ellie and Ash, a lovely couple who have just purchased a nice house in the country. Their neighbor, Benjamin, immediately warms to Ellie and brings her kind and neighborly gifts, But Benjamin has an aloof sister, Virginia, who he explains away as an unwell woman. Soon Ellie learns that the house they just moved into has a dark secret.

This book had me scratching my head the entire time, trying to unravel the mystery. I must admit that I missed the clues indicating who the biggest bad of the book was. Now that I think about it, the clues were there. I should have been a more careful reader. However, I was glad I missed them because this book surprised me, and I liked it a lot.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ALC. Shakira Shute was a great narrator, providing a bevy of voices for the different characters.

This is my first but definitely not my last by Keri Beevis!

It is not easy to spook me but this story had all the elements. A creepy, dark, secret setting for all the horror and mayhem. An unnerving set of characters with hidden motivations. And of course, a morbid twist.

While some seasoned thriller fans may see the big twist coming (I suspected but still found myself gripped by the story) I would absolutely recommend The People Next Door.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape for this arc.

This book was so so SO creepy. The audiobook made it 10x creepier. I recommend reading this book in full daylight and maybe don’t be completely alone.
If you love thrillers you know that some are predictable and not so thrilling. The People Next Door does not follow that trend. Every time I thought I knew what the twist was, I was proven wrong, and it just got creepier and creepier.

3.25 stars

This book turned out to be a bit too creepy for my taste, especially in the end. It was a bit too much horror and I am not a fan of the gender. Nevertheless, that takes nothing away from the book.

A your couple buys a house in a secluded area. The same house turns out to have a mysterious and unfortunate history as some people died and disappeared there. Ellie and Ash decide to give it a go, despite it all but soon enough weird things start to happen and the neighbours might be more than they bargained for.

This book goes fast as you want to know what is happening and how it will all end. It's pretty intense at times and especially in the end when it gets quite spooky.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this book!

I really enjoyed this one. It was creepy and atmospheric. I listened to the audiobook and while I could not stand the narrators’ voice, she did do a decent job with the story. Her accent also definitely added something to the story. The twist I definitely did not see coming and that is always exciting when you read as many thrillers as I do.

Ellie and Ash are so excited to move into their new cottage in Norfolk, England. Ellie is curious about her strange neighbors and quickly becomes friends with Ben. As time passes she wonders about his reclusive sister Virginia.

Her world comes crashing down when Ellie learns the truth about what happened in her house and that Ash has been keeping secrets from her. What happened to the former owners of the house? Who are these weirdos next door? And why is Ellie’s puppy obsessed with getting into the creepy cellar?

Thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for this ARC.

I only listened to a small percentage of this before feeling that the writing style was too diverting to continue. It just felt very formulaic.

"The People Next Door" by Keri Beevis gave me "MAJOR"' check all the doors/windows to make sure they are locked syndrome". I don't know if that is a real syndrome, but you get my drift!. I seriously pulled my blankets up and hugged my dogs while listening to this hair-raising audiobook. 😲

Ellie and her boyfriend Ash just bought their first house together. It needs some work (like most starter homes do), but it was a great bargain. It is on two acres, has a garden with great potential, and a pond Ellie can't wait to fill with beautiful fish. Ellie meets her new neighbor Benjamin, who is extremely nice and helpful. Benjamin works from his house because he takes care of his sister Virginia, who suffers from emotional difficulties. Virginia is quiet, but Ellie understands that Virginia's disability makes her nonverbal. Ellie is so happy! What can possibly go wrong?

I figured out the ending before I got there. However, I was not at all disappointed because I still had goose bumps running down my spine from listening to it! Listening to the audio book makes this story so much spookier. It is narrated by the fantastic Shakira Shute, and will be published January 18, 2022.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the honor of reviewing this riveting story. I really appreciate your kindness!

The narrator is pitch perfect for this creepy, gothic thriller. At the 88% mark the author does something I didn't know could be done and it is executed brilliantly. It only continues and then continues to build from there. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
