The "academy" trope isn't something that catches my interest nowadays, but the book offered some nice character development, although most of the essential periods in his life were crammed into a little over 300 pages. It made me want more type and page space for some past moments, but I guess the role of the first book is always to introduce and set the stage for the more important action. Still Tristan's journey until he finally manifested his powers was quite intriguing, eventful and partially emotional.
