No one is more surprised than Pat when the patriarch of his pro football player family buys a town to bring the family closer together. He's even more surprised when he realizes that it's the hometown of the one who got away. Lindy was supposed to be traveling the world as a journalist; instead, she's been living in her small hometown, being a mother to Jo, the wonderful baby girl her addict sister abandoned. But her sister wants her daughter back, and the only way for Lindy to have a chance at keeping Jo is to find a husband who can help her provide a more stable home life. Good thing her former flame is more than willing to play the part of husband, if only her own heart would remember that it's only make-believe.
This story is full of character. Not just the main couple, but everyone around them has distinct personalities that make every interaction fun and memorable. It has the small-town charm with few of the pitfalls and clichés that sometimes bog down the genre. People are nosy and supportive, but it doesn't reach the level of annoying you can sometimes run into in small-town romance. It is a quirky town; it just happens to also be a believable town.
The closed-door romance between Pat and Lindy is as steamy as one could wish for, with lots of indecision and denial of feelings to make the first kiss and all that follows that much sweeter. Pat is too good to be true, which is perfect, as that's exactly what Lindy needs and deserves after all she's sacrificed.
I'm looking forward to reading the love stories in store for the rest of Sheet Cake, Texas.
Very happy thanks to the author for the fun read!
