Tyrus is one of my favorite guests on Fox News. He's funny and it was nice to hear how his struggle in life built him into the amazing man he is today. It's also nice when the author reads their autobiography.

This was definitely Tyrus and I found it interesting to learn of his rough childhood.

This memoir tells the reader/listener about Tyrus’ struggles in his dysfunctional family, pugnacious childhood, and his short ventures in crime as a young adult. Tyrus got into fights early in his life as a result of his mixed heritage and bullies who he decided to deal with. One of his childhood heroes was American Dream wrestler, Dusty Rhodes. It was a long time dream for Tyrus to get into wrestling. Through his employment journey, Tyrus, born George Murdoch, went through numerous trade names.

It seems as though Tyrus stumbled into his successes. He had a rough time in football before he fought his way into a position as a bodyguard for Snoop Dogg. Tyrus enjoyed that work, especially a time coaching young, disadvantaged children. The bodyguard position led him to a chance in wrestling. His participation in television wrestling went through some ups and downs but ultimately gave him a chance meeting with Greg Gutfeld, a political commentator and comedian at Fox News. This led to Tyrus being a regular (sidekick) on the Greg Gutfeld Show, now rebranded as Gutfeld!

Tyrus fulfilled a dream when he became the NWA World Television Champion in August 2021. He wears his champion belt during his appearances on Gutfeld! and while contributing on various other Fox news and opinion programs.

I enjoyed the informative memoir which is presented with Tyrus’ sharp wit and a humble forthrightness. He was a hot head as a youth, still has a brash mouth, but has, over the years, found wisdom grounded in common sense that he is able to share. I have seen Tyrus on television and was impressed by his down-to-earth common sense. I sensed he had a rough childhood but didn’t really know. I recommend this to anyone who would like to know more about this intelligent commentator. (Warning: there is a liberal amount of swearing.)

Audio Notes: Tyrus does the narration of his own work. Although I enjoyed his natural delivery, there were technical issues with sound levels, background noises, and uneven pacing. This didn’t hamper my enjoyment of the audio.

Most people who have heard of Tyrus are familiar with his wrestling persona, but this book goes behind the fame and reveals the person behind it. Tyrus' narration makes his story more poignant, especially when he talks about some of the difficult lessons he's learned in life. He doesn't hold back on the details of his childhood and adolescence, which are at times heartbreaking. I enjoyed hearing about the people he has worked with and known, but the best part was getting his unvarnished truth. It was a quick listen, and I couldn't put it down.

I didn't know much about Tyrus before listening to this memoir, other than what I've seen and appreciated from him on Fox News. I love his straight talk and interesting perspectives on Fox, and this book does not disappoint in that regard! He overcame multiple childhood traumas, and I am amazed at his resilience and ability to view these incidences objectively, especially when it comes to the racism of his grandfather. He also endured neglect on the part of his mother, and she subjected him to abusive boyfriends. His own father was abusive, as well. Despite all the trauma, there is redemption in this story, such as the patient and loving couple that raised him before he moved to California and his relationship with Snoop. He is a master of plowing ahead and reinventing himself when needed. My only negative feedback, which lead me to give four stars instead of five, was that he reads it in a monotonous voice without feeling, especially in light of the heavy material. I think I might have enjoyed reading this more than listening to it.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and RB Media for a free audio version of Tyrus’ book in exchange for my honest review!

3.5 stars! This was my very first audiobook. My husband and I enjoyed listening to Tyrus’ book on our long drives together. It’s inspiring to see how much he’s overcome with the cards he was dealt and it was fun hearing about his life chapter as a bodyguard for Snoop Dogg. Thanks so much to NetGalley and RB Media for a free audio version of Tyrus’ book in exchange for my honest review!

Just Tyrus: A Memoir was a great read by Tyrus. Tyrus was a pro wrestler and a political commentator. This is his wild and triumphant life story from his dysfunctional upbringing to body guarding for Snoop Dogg, to becoming a wrestling icon and a provocative on-air voice. Tyrus birth name is George Murdoch, he is the product of a 1970s mixed marriage. He learned to fight early in life by fending off race baiting bullies and the dysfunction in his home. Throughout high school and most of college he was couch surfing. To get by her ran drugs and bounced at clubs. He played football throughout high school and college. He had a false start with the WWE before becoming Snoop Dogg's bodyguard where he travelled the world. The WWE urged him to return and he became Brodus Clay. He had a chance social media encounter with Greg Gutfeld at Fox News which resulted in Tyrus finding his new skill as a social commentator. I enjoyed reading this book and think it is great for any fan of WWE and Tyrus.

First off.....Thank you NetGalley for the copy of the Audiobook. I am not a fan of audiobooks just because I have difficulty concentrating, being still, and listening. But I figured I would give it try. I have always admired Tyrus but I am not sure I can give this a fair review. I had a hard time following this one on audio. Took me forever to listen to it and had to keep going back and listening to parts over again. If I had the actual bool and sat down and read it I know I would have enjoyed the way more. Tyrus's (George Murduch) memoir is fascinating and he has overcome and accomplished a lot. I am a fan of The Gufeld Show and Tyrus is the reason for that. If I see this book out in the wild I would definitely buy it and give it another go!!

A Memior
By Tyrus
George Murdoch aka Tyrus was born in the 1970s from a bi-racial marriage. When his mother moved back in with her parents; his maternal grandfather was a racist and made his displeasure and embarrassment at having a black grandchild known. Tyrus was sent to live with a foster family. He did well there for he found approval, steadiness and compassion from his new family. After his biological mother completed nursing school she insisted George come live with her Life wasn’t easy for George. He was a fighter, he had to be. There were race-baiting bullies and saying his home was dysfunctional is an understatement. His mother remarried and had more children. His stepfather was an abusive racist bully. He played football in college and had mentors. After college he worked for Snoop Dogg as a bodyguard. He tells a story about carrying Prince that I found fascinating. The giant of a man became Tyrus in the WWE. A Tweet led to Greg Gutfeld and Tyrus meeting at Fox News. Tyrus is now a social commentator. Tyrus is very intelligent and has a way of expressing himself in a plain common-sense way This book shares Tyrus life from a dysfunctional childhood to his rise in fame. Tyrus is true to himself. He does not put on airs. He does not pretend to be something he isn’t. He states his view without malevolence.
I first saw Tyrus on one of our favorite shows, Gutfeld! I was impressed when I heard him cut through the bs and get to the point. I recently purchased a copy of this book for my 15-year-old grandson. While the language in it is a bit rough it is nothing he hasn’t heard in high school. I wanted him to grab the gist of Tyrus message, it doesn’t matter where you come from you can do anything you set your mind to. Kudos to Tyrus!

I know Tyrus from back when he was wrestling in the WWE under the name Brodus Clay and currently from his time on the Greg Gutfeld show where I find his commentary/opinions to be quite interesting. But little did I realize what a fascinating life Tyrus (aka George Murdoch) has had. From his rough upbringing, to his time working as a bodyguard for Snoop Dogg, to his move to professional wrestler, and now as a commentator on Fox News, Tyrus pretty much puts it all out there. The good and the bad, and it’s a heck of a story. Knowing his background now gives a totally new perspective to his commentary and makes his attitude and accomplishments all the more impressive. I throughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. The one place that I think the audiobook stumbles just a little is in the narration, which is actually surprising since Tyrus himself does the narration. Seeing him give interviews and doing commentary on various shows, he always comes off extremely articulate, so I expected his narration to be just as smooth. That isn’t the case. When he’s talking off the cuff he has a very natural/conversational vibe, but his actual reading of his book is a bit stunted. While I appreciate hearing Tyrus’s story in his own voice, he might have been better served having someone else do the narration. Narrating audiobooks truly is an art form. That being said I wouldn’t say it really hurt the book by any stretch, merely stating that as someone who has listened to hundred of audiobooks it’s noticeable. I’d like to thank Tantor Audio and NetGalley for allowing to listen an audio ARC of Just Tyrus.

I listened to the audiobook and it was read by the author. I think that made the book better because it felt more like him telling you a series of stories about his life. At times that approach as a series of stories was good, but other times it wasn’t. Sometimes that approach made me feel too distant from the story, so I didn’t feel like I could judge for myself about the people and the situation. Sometimes it was too much telling and not enough showing.
I had no clue that he was on Fox until after I agreed to listen to the book. So I was a little concerned about the amount of political opinion that would creep into the book, but he did a good job focusing on his life story. There were a few times there was political opinion, but not much.
Overall it was an interesting series of stories, but there was too much telling and not enough showing.
Thanks to NetGalley and Post Hill Press for the opportunity to review the audiobook.

I love a good memoir. I watch Tyrus on the Fox channel occasionally, I enjoyed this and did not realize he struggled so much as a child. This was really good.

Pro wrestler and political commentator Tyrus goes deep into his wild but triumphant life story, from his painfully dysfunctional upbringing to bodyguarding for Snoop Dogg, to becoming a wrestling icon and one of the most provocative on-air voices today.
The product of a 1970s mixed marriage, George Murdoch learned to fight early in life, fending off both race-baiting bullies and the demons of a dysfunctional home. Couch surfing all through high school and most of college, the quick-witted, sharp-tongued giant played football, ran drugs, and bounced at clubs to try to survive. After a false start with the WWE, he eventually became Snoop Dogg's bodyguard and traveled the world with the hip hop legend, biding his time and honing his rap. When the WWE urged him to return, George became "Brodus Clay" and, for the next several years, reinvented himself numerous times under the watchful mentorship of the legendary Dusty Rhodes, "the American Dream." He was eventually christened "Tyrus," and shortly after, a chance social media encounter with Greg Gutfeld at Fox News resulted in Tyrus finding a new skill: sage social commentator. Ferociously funny, blunt, and tenacious, Just Tyrus traces his unlikely and spectacular rise. As always with Tyrus, it's in-your-face and offers no apologies.
I loved this book. It is the true story of how Tyrus took what happened to him when he was younger and turned it around to become who he is today. He really loved his mom so much that he tried to protect her from herself. It was very interesting that he was Snoop Doog's bodyguard and worked with kids about football. He became a wrestler with the WWE. He is now co-host with Gutfeld at Fox News. He is ferociously funny and blunt and allowed to be himself on Fox News. I'm glad I got to know someone like Tyrus and loved reading his book. Thanks to NetGalley and Post Hill Press for a copy for an honest review.

Went for the audio on this one and I'm glad I did. Given that it's memoir, it's better to hear it in the voice of the writer and the writer's actual inflections as opposed to my interpretation of it. In addition, I enjoyed watching pro wrestling when I was a kid, so I particularly enjoyed those parts of it.

Best part of the book is that you get an inspiration for helping in your own community. If you aren't doing it, you will be inspired to do so. If you are, you will be inspired to do more.

Wow! Tyrus is the epitome of perseverance and determination. This is a memoir that needed to be written and most definitely needs to be read. I have a whole new level of respect for him and his ability to overcome challenges and break down barriers. I am most impressed by his desire to work with kids. As a teacher, I feel his passion. #teamtyrus

4.5 Stars

A couple of months ago I was listening to a podcast and Tyrus was interviewed amidst promoting his book. I was immediately drawn in by his compelling life story. I've seen him on the commentary panel of the Greg Gutfield show on Fox News in passing, but hadn't ever listened to him in depth. What I heard on the podcast piqued my interest to read this book.

He is the product of a black father and a white mother who gave birth to him at the age of 15. Her parents disapproved of their union and when things fell apart she moved back in with her parents. Her father let it be known his blatant contempt for the child's father, and this is where Tyrus (real name George Murdoch) first experienced racism...from his maternal grandfather. And here's where things got interesting because Tyrus was sent to live with a foster family and found out much later that they were paid to take care of him. Tyrus thrived in this new environment and loved the stability, normalcy and kindness his new caregivers showed him. In the meantime, his biological mother was going to nursing school. Now settled comfortably into his new life, Tyrus's childhood was upended once again when his mother wanted Tyrus back. Now working as a nurse, his mother remarried and had more children, but his stepfather's relationship with Tyrus was toxic- and he also cheated on his mother. Tyrus found refuge at college because it was someplace else to live, and had success playing football. Along the way he was greatly influenced by mentors at college who taught him the value of hard work and personal responsibility. For years Tyrus was rapper Snoop Dogg's bodyguard, but he also realized his dream of becoming a professional wrestler in both the WWE and Impact Wrestling. A random retweet of a Greg Gutfield joke was the spark that led to an invite to be on Gutfield's Fox show. He marvels at the unlikely nature of his inclusion at the network, a huge former wrestler with lots of tattoos that wears a backwards baseball cap as his regular uniform on the show. He says that you don't see anyone like him at CNN, and despite the propaganda directed at Fox they are very inclusive of all types of people at the station. He absolutely drips with mega admiration for fellow Fox host Dana Perino.

You can't put Tyrus in a box because he calls it as he sees it. He is very forthright and reasoned in his opinions without malice. He didn't even vote in the 2016 presidential election rejecting both candidates, and he voted twice for Obama. He also feels that the real governmental power resides in the congress and senate, and that there should be term limits there to avoid potential corruption over time. He experienced another kind of racism meeting with his father's black relatives later in life, when the matriarch took him aside and urged him to marry someone either white or Asian. He also experienced being stopped by the police in his life, but when he knew the Gutfield panel would be discussing this subject, he was so concerned about it that he spoke to some extended police friends to ensure he provided the best commentary possible on a hotbed topic.

I listened to the audio version of the book which Tyrus narrated himself, and it really personalized the experience for me. I sensed his sincerity as he read his own words. He's been through a lot in life, but seems to have absorbed the good and the bad and chose to move forward in life with positivity and his unabashed authentic self.

Thank you to the publisher Tantor Audio for providing an advance reader copy via NetGalley.

Just Tyrus is the true story of Tyrus – a celebrity known well in the wrestling world, Snoop Dog world, and Conservative talk show world.
I came to know of Tyrus through the talk show Gutfeld! Not only is he funny, but this black man also speaks profound common sense.
I love the audio book because he reads it himself, and his voice is familiar and oddly, relaxing!
His story is one of a really tough upbringing. However, Tyrus does not dwell in Victimhood. He dwells in Rising Above, Learning and Leveling Up, Failing Forward.
His youthful stories are sad (but he does not spin them as sad, he puts a humorous twist on them, or/and doesn’t dwell on the crappy situations he was in). It is what it is.
I sometimes find myself sinking into “if only” excuses, and Just Tyrus is a great reminder to not dwell, keep moving forward, reinvent and pivot as often as you need to or want to.
11/10 stars! Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for blessing this book into my life!

I love memoirs, particularly because I’m always curious about other people’s lives. Tyrus’ early life is only palatable because you know it turns out OK. I was able to laugh at times only because of that (and he is genuinely funny). There are some heartbreaking moments but for the most part, this was an incredibly entertaining glimpse into who he is and what shaped him into the man he is today.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen to the audiobook before it releases in a few weeks. Tyrus did a great job narrating!

I mostly know Tyrus from Greg Gutfeld’s shows and his show with Kat, so I didn’t know a lot about his personal life. I was saddened by what he had to go through as a child with an absent father and a mother who fell in and out of his life. His unconditional love for her is kind. He had to be a grown up in ways that are unfair to a child.

But wow, did he persevere and come out on the other side! What a stand up guy. I didn’t know how much he loved animals or that he was a bodyguard for Snoop Dogg. I can’t stop picturing him carrying Prince safely out on his hip!

He had to learn so much on his own but it’s given him an incredible amount of accountability and an amazing sense of logic. I’m really glad I had the opportunity to learn more about him.
