The Bree Taggert series is one of the best mystery series out there. If you haven't read any, Melinda Leigh does a nice job of summarizing important things that you need to know about the characters in each book. Lie to Her is book 6 in the Bree Taggert series but you could read this without the others and enjoy it a great deal. The reason that I love the series so much is that not only are you guaranteed a good mystery, but you get so much more. The characters in the series feel like extended family to me and I look forward to seeing what they're up to with each new book.
Lie to Her finds Bree living in her sister's farm house and raising her niece and nephew about 11 months after her sister was murdered. Bree moved to upstate New York from a job with the NYPD to take over parenting duties and she is also the Sheriff. Bree brought Dana with her, a friend and co-worker from the NYPD who was ready to retire. Dana lives at the farm house and helps with the cooking duties and watching the kids when Bree can't be there. Bree has a very good friend, Matt Flynn, who is one of her deputies. He was injured in the line of duty with his K-9 partner, but is able to work side by side with Bree. He's helped Bree to get over her fear of dogs and she now has a rescue dog for the kids. Bree's brother, Adam, lives close by and is an artist who gets huge amounts of money for each painting he does. He helps Bree with the kids, especially financially.
Lie to Her opens with Bree planning Adam's birthday. The kids want to get him a horse that they'll keep and care for at the farm. Adam wants to start riding so Matt and Bree are going to a horse auction for rescues. A call comes in that a man has been found murdered at his home. When Bree and her team arrive the man has been dead for awhile and he's been killed by plastic wrap. The killer wrapped his head in layers of plastic wrap so that he couldn't breathe and would suffer an agonizing death. It seems personal. His hands and feet are bound so that he couldn't help himself. As Bree and her team investigate they find that the victim was on several dating apps and dated many girls at one time. The theory is that maybe one of the women he dated got angry and wanted him to pay.
As they're working on the case another man is found murdered and in the same way! Now Bree is worried that there's a possible serial killer out there. The second victim was also using several dating apps and dating many women at once. None of the people that are interviewed during the investigation has anything good to say about either victim. They used the women and then broke up with them by text. This made several of the women very angry as they thought there was a real connection. As Bree goes to the home of the second victim, a surprise is waiting for her. The killer has left a note for Bree to watch her step and before you know it there's a rattling sound and a snake appears ready to strike. Bree and Matt are able to get out of the house without the snake striking them and animal control is called to help. The first victim had many cages of snakes in his basement and some of the cages were missing.
The book does a great job of getting you so involved that you'll read it very quickly. It's always fun trying to guess who did it and why and this one is tough. There are so many potential murderers that were treated badly by the victims. Did one of the women from the dating app kill the men? Did the brother of the first victim get jealous of his brother and murder him and others? Will Bree and her team be able to solve the case before more people are murdered? What happens when the third victim hits close to home for Bree? Will she be able to get there in time? Will Bree and Matt get Adam a horse at the auction? Will Bree and Matt's relationship continue to grow closer? Do yourself a favor and read Lie to Her and the other books in the series by Melinda Leigh. I love these books so much that when I finish one I'm sad because I have to wait a while for the next one. I can't wait for book 7! I rate this book 5 stars.
