I have always wanted to try a raised bed and I am so glad I picked up this book. I didn't get to make one this year but I am already planning next year with the help from the book. Oh and my dad lol.

This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but it does what it is attempting rather well. I was looking for ideas about how to manage and rotate my raised beds, tips for plants to grow in them, that sort of thing. And the first third of the book does deliver on those points. The majority of the book, however, are plans and construction diagrams for various raised beds. These are really helpful if that is what you are looking for, tons of variety on shape, size, and materials. But less helpful if you already have your beds in place.

"Raised Bed Revolution" is about gardening using raised garden beds. The author described why you might want to use raised beds and a wide variety of different ways to do raised beds, from different heights to the various materials that can be used. The book included several step-by-step projects for creating your own raised beds, from materials to finished project. She also included many colorful pictures of raised beds to inspire the reader with ideas. The projects included a basic raised bed placed just above the ground to garden beds tall enough to sit on the edges to a vertical garden. Overall, I'd recommend the book if you're serious about trying this way of gardening.

This is a newly released edition and I don’t know if changes have been made. It will be good for people who want a lot of photo inspiration and there are a fair number of plans to build your own. In a lot of cases I cringed and thought “How much poison would you like to feed your family?” because there were a lot of projects using things like old drawers, suitcases, plastic lining and pallets. In a few cases she cautioned about these materials and not to use them, and then she featured them later in the projects anyway. She warned you not to use cinder blocks because of the dangerous chemicals in them and then has a project using cement blocks that look exactly the same. She does give good information about safe new wood though.

There’s also not much information at all about actually gardening in raised beds. This is more about building them and showing pretty gardens that have them.

If you’re looking for aesthetic stuff about raised beds and Pinterest kind of content and building plans, this will be a great book.

Note to the publisher that does not affect my rating: this was a really unpleasant ARC to read because the photos were such terrible quality. I assume the printed version will be high quality but it is difficult to review a book with such awful resolution.

I read a temporary digital version of this book for review.

This is a very comprehensive book covering all you need to know about raised bed gardening, plus more. It gives plenty of examples of different kinds of raised beds so is perfect for finding inspiration. Also covered is building and using raised beds in both large and small spaces, including vertical gardens, growing in repurposed containers, cold frames and much more.

The book contains detailed instructions for building your own raised beds from wood and customising them for example adding benches to them. Building from repurposed wood is covered, as is making a raised bed with a pond in it! We are taught how to make planters out of everything from an old vintage suitcase to gas pipes. One of the main features of the book is building your own beds and planters out of wood so be aware of this if you have no intention of ever making your own.

In addition to creating beds and planters, the book also covers what to grow and has suggestions of what to plant in each planter that you are guided to make yourself. So even if you do not wish to make your own beds, you can still use the planting guidelines in the book.

Overall, I was very impressed both with the quality of information in this book and the clear photos and diagrams. If you are interested in creating your own raised bed garden, or even growing in planters on your patio, you would do well to read this book.

With thanks to Netgalley and Cool Springs Press for providing an advance review copy. All opinions in this review are my own.

RAISED BED REVOLUTION by Tara Nolan is coming out in paperback this month. It is a helpful resource for gardeners and also provides some nice plans for amateur carpenters who would like to craft their own raised beds for flowers or vegetables. I particularly liked the option with built-in benches pictured on the cover, although she offers other suggestions such as using bricks, rocks, or timbers as the frame. Additional plans to construct include an elevated planter box and a vertical herb planter. Nolan, a garden writer from Toronto, describes everything from proper drainage and soil mix to what to plant (ranging across ornamentals, pollinator friendly plants, and edibles). She has included options for a beginning gardener as well as those with more experience. For example, one section tells how to build a raised bed with a pond and then lists some water friendly plants. The pictures throughout are colorful and amply illustrate her suggestions (e.g., adding an arch or trellis). Whether you hope to cultivate vegetables and fruits or establish your own cutting garden, RAISED BED REVOLUTION will give you plenty of ideas and inspiration.

Creative and inspiring. Raised Bed Revolution by Tara Nolan has captured all that the raised bed revolution tries to utilize. There is a huge gallery of ideas and show how. There are chapters on Raided Bed Basics, Raised Beds for Big Spaces, Raised Beds for Small Spaces, Raised Beds with a Purpose (the one with the dog bed underneath and waist-high raised bed was my favorite), A No Handy No Problem and a Support for Your Plants for all those plants that will be inside your raised beds. There is a lot of visual interest throughout the book and lots of gardens to inspire.

One thing I would like to offer is the section where it's talked about using pressure-treated wood for raised beds for growing food that should have been much more prominent and not included only in a small text box about "recycled wood". All of the font should have been larger and that section just much, much more prominent.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher Quartro for the opportunity to read and review this helped book.
