I enjoy a post-apocalyptic story as much as anyone; who wouldn't like knowing some people have things a lot worse than they do -- so go forth and be happy you live in a normal world where problems are just the usual. The surprise was this wasn't a run-away virus that wipes out nearly the entire population leaving a world of barely surviving pockets of humans banning together to keep civilization alive. World of Darkness by Connor Strong is something different. It's basically a non-stop action thriller following two people trying to get from one place to another while avoiding a serial killer determined to see they don't survive.

The book starts with flight attendant Kara Parks doing her best to finish her flight with no problems and get home to her children and her home in a small community outside Boston. There had been a bit of turbulence off and on during the flight and, over Vermont, the turbulence increased significantly. The plane crashed in a heavily wooded area. Kara wasn't the only survivor. Sam Fellman was wounded and losing a lot of blood, but he was determined to survive. It made sense for them to work together until help arrived. Their phones didn't work, the plane was in pieces, and the serial killer being transported by the sky marshal was missing.

The setup was not what I expected for a post-apocalyptic novel. In fact, you don't learn about the EMP event until nearly a third of the way into the story. However, there were a lot of hints that something was wrong--very wrong. But the story had me so invested in whether these two would survive to get to somewhere they could report the crash and get help that I'd forgotten it was not a serial killer thriller but a post-apocalyptic story.

The setup, the characters, and the tight plotting with almost constant life-threatening danger kept the pages turning. There's some backstory given to add depth to the characters of Kara and Sam. It helped this reader to better understand the often strange reactions each of them had to some pretty innocent events along their journey.

Throughout the book, the reader doesn't get any more information than the characters (except for what you might add from your own imagination, technical knowledge, and awareness of human nature). This helps keep the story grounded in reality even as society seems to be coming apart at the seams.

World of Darkness is the first book in a series and there are two books out and a third expected (but not yet listed on Amazon). This first book kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page and I'll be trying to slip the second book into my TBR pile.

World of Darkness (World Of Darkness, #1) by Connor Strong will hopefully be the first of many! This was an interesting thriller based around..the end of the world. I feel like doomsday horror is a dime-a-dozen lately, and yet this was still entertaining!

If you want a good survival story, this one's it ! Two people and a dog are trying to escape a dangerous killer while facing other dangers along the way. The EMP is a nice touch, cutting the characters from the rest of the world. This gives an ominous vibe during the entire book and that was amazing. I'm gonna read the other books without a doubt. Highly recommended !

Loved loved loved Danger the Dog!! The EMP was an interesting take on things as well.

The characters of Kara & Sam were well written and I’d definitely enjoy reading more books in this series.

The whole “killer” part of the story was a bit “overkill” in my mind. There’s enough going on with the apocalypse to keep things interesting.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author & Green Candle Press for a copy! Can’t wait to read Book 2!

Strong has crafted a tale that is reminiscent of Grace Hamilton's survival books. So when I saw this book available to review I jumped at the opportunity and it didn't let me down.

Kara survives a plane crash, but so does a serial killer being transported on that flight. Kara is on the run and the killer is on the loose, and after her. Kara runs into Sam, a former Marine, and the two are plunged into a race to survive the crumbling society around them and the killer after them both. The book left off on a cliffhanger.

This book reminded me a little of the tv show Revolution. It shows the descent of modern society and how heavily we rely on power, along with the consequences if something should ever happen to it. It keeps the reader interested in the character's ultimate fate until the end. I liked the book, but never felt very deeply connected to it. It was a highly enjoyable read but I wasn't totally blown away, which is not a bad thing. I wish there had been more development with the romance between Sam and Kara, which I am hoping will happen in the sequel. I do plan on reading it when it comes out to see how the characters develop and see what happens on Kara's journey to get home to her children.

Strong's book was well paced and flowed easily. There were a few spots where there were quieter moments and I wish there had been a little more depth in those times for the characters to bond and be a little more fleshed out. There is tons of action along with all the drama associated with surviving disaster. Survival story and post-apocalyptic book fans will enjoy this whole series.

Initially the cover intrigued me but I was sold when I read that it's a post apocalyptic survival thriller. I love apocalyptic but this one was a little different than I'm used to, not only are the characters trying to survive a plane crash that occurred from an EMP but also a serial killer who happened to also be on the plane with them while navigating a world that is falling apart.

It starts with the plane crash and the action continues through the woods, at times it felt slow but also felt like a lot was going on and made it hard to follow at some parts.

You get multiple povs, Kara a single mother of two girls and a flight attendant, Sam an ex marine who has ptsd and is traveling for a funeral and the most eerie part, the serial killer Robert Winters.

It was creepy to read from the killers pov, especially during his kills. He was a very dislikeable character.

Overall, I'm glad I got to read this thriller, it was different than what I'm used to reading but it held my interest. The tension was real wondering who would make it out alive during the chase.

First, I'd like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC.
Second, let's get to the review itself. Let me just say that I haven't been on the edge of my seat like this for a long time. I felt as if I was living out the plot with the characters and their problems, emotions and journey were my own. It was definitely a page turner for me, however, I felt as though at times it was slightly repetitive. By this I mean that it was a sort of neverending cat and mouse chase.
I must say, I was a bit disappointed at the end, as it was blown a bit out of proportion and bordered on impossibility, though I can't deny that sci-fi/dystopian novels have a tendency to delve into the improbable and unimaginable.
If you're looking for a read that will make you very anticipating of the progression of the plot and you're a dystopian fiction fan, this is a pretty chill pick.

Oh boy! I'm a huge fan on apocalyptic books and the description caught my attention. What a story! Very intense, scary and full of chills and thrills! I read this in one day and I wasn't disappointed. The only issue is that with most apocalyptic books, you'll find yourself being left hanging for the outcome (which means you have to wait for the next in the series)!

Thank you #NetGalley for the AC! Looking forward to the next in this series.

World of Darkness by Connor Strong
World of Darkness Series 1

Plane crash sets the scene for the beginning of an apocalyptic series set in a different world after an EMP occurs. Kara, Sam, and Danger are in it to win it as they fight to survive not only the crash but the elements, a serial killer, and a world gone mad.

What I liked:
* Kara: airline attendant, single mother, doing her best for her family, strong, survivor, wants to get home
* Sam: ex-Marine, on his way home to a funeral, has PTSD, a planner, has issues from his past, wounded, persistent
* Danger: a BIG dog that survived the crash, bonds Kara and Sam, protective
* The strength and endurance of Kara and Sam and all that they did and were willing to do to survive
* Thinking about what I would do if there was an EMP and how prepared I would be to survive
* That there will be another book to look forward to and hoping to find out how the trio make it “home”

What I didn’t like:
* Robert Winters: amoral serial killer who was easy to dislike
* That a state of lawlessness that humans sink to rather than rising to be their better selvs.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Green Candle Press efor the ARC – this is my honest review

Requesting a copy of Conner Strong's World of Darkness to review was definitely an impulse request for me. I enjoy books like this, but I am usually a little picky about which ones I want to read. Though I had never heard of Connor Strong, something about the description and the cover just told me I would like this one. I was not wrong at all. I am so glad that I requested this - I absolutely flew through it and couldn't put it down. It was paced well, the characters were interesting, and I loved it. I definitely got a bit of a Walking Dead vibe, without the zombies and back at the beginning of the tv series when everything was new and unsettling. Following Kara, Sam, and Danger through their terrifying race against a serial killer, their struggles with their own demons, and a look at the world falling apart in the wake of disaster, this book was intriguing on many levels for me. Despite it being a relatively short book, the characters were well developed. I loved the small looks into what made them tick, as well as how they grew and changed throughout the story. I absolutely can't wait for more in this series!

I requested to read this book because I really enjoy reading apocalyptic books, and the story in the synopsis really appealed to me, there’s an EMP and a plane crashes, kara and Sam need to survive in the woods and besides the plane crash, the EMP they also have to survive a serial killer, and the book was fine and good in the first chapters, even thou a bit slow, but I like slow, with Kara (a flight attendant) relating her day and that she wants to go back to her family because it is her daughter birthday, when the SHTF. We don’t really know what happened, she also don’t know what happened, she is outside in a tree, and that's fine, for me things went downhill when we are introduced to Sam…

Sam is traveling for a funeral, and all he brings with him on the plane is a carry on bag with (read this part as his bug out bag)
-waterproof tarp
-50 feet of paracord
-water purification tablets
-a tactical flashlight (this is something I find it really weird for him to be able to pass it on airport security checkpoints)
-2 tactical pens
-2 empty bottles (in Heathrow airport I had to throw my own empty bottle away because it was bigger than allowed, and you could have been transporting some sort of volatile gas inside. )
-electrical and duck tape
-a compass
- almonds
-cliff bars
-first aid kit with antiseptic, gauze and aspirin
-needles and thread
-matches in a water tight bag
-titanium cup
- a six inch ferrocerium rod (and this is another thing I really doubt he would be able to pass the airport security check point or even bring into the plain…)

Who in is sane mind, after 9/11 would bring this kind of things into a plane cabin? A commercial plane cabin, and while travelling to a funeral? I know what he is ex-military but that doesn’t make him Rambo, after the crash when he awakes, he has a metal bar that is stuck in him, and what is the first thing he does without being prepared to stop the bleeding? Any sane person would know not to do that unless you want to bleed to death, because not being sure that you could stop the bleeding right away that is a very dumb thing to do… actually a female tampon and some tape could temporarily fix it but he didn’t do that, I just screamed at the book like doctor mike would hahah.

I know this is fiction but still I want to feel that my characters are believable and I can love or hate them because of what and who they are, I didn’t find it amusing for Sam to be an amazing super man, its just like in the walking dead, even after 12 years from the SHTF they still have gas, can still find cars or motorcycles that still work or full stores of food…

But after this complain, I did like Kara, and I also did like the tension of running away from a serial killer, the writing is not bad and if you don’t pay any mind to what I complained here you’ll enjoy this book, I just don’t feel it was for me.

Thank you NetGalley and Green Candle Press for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.
