I requested this one because it might be an upcoming title I would like to review on my Youtube Channel. However, after reading the first several chapters I have determined that this book does not suit my tastes. So I decided to DNF this one.

Best book of the year for me! This is my first Michael Koryta read, and I can't wait to dive into his other books. A thrilling book of suspense and character deep dive with all the feels.

srael Pike’s curiosity gets the best of him when he sees a yacht adrift off the Maine island he’s called home since he got out of prison. He rows out, climbs aboard and discovers a bloodbath--seven bodies, including a couple of prominent politicians. The Coast Guard arrives and soon Pike is not just a witness, but a suspect in the murders.

After serving time for manslaughter, Pike is a convicted killer, but he’s also an honest man—or so he needs to get us to believe. Unfortunately for him, he has a nemesis—his estranged uncle, Sterling Pike, a corrupt deputy sheriff who rules Salvation Point Island. As Sterling pursues him, Israel harbors secrets and discovers more about the sordid side of island life. Whom can he trust: the woman lieutenant with the state police or the private investigator who offers a way out of his dilemma—or neither of them?

Meanwhile on nearby Little Herring Ledge, 12-year-old Lyman Rankin is enduring his own hellish life with an abusive, alcoholic father. When he seeks refuge in an abandoned house, he encounters an injured woman who threatens him with her hatchet. Could she have a connection to the murder yacht?

Lots of suspenseful moments in this fast-paced story, which drew me in immediately and had me rooting for Israel and even more so for Lyman. Michael Koryta’s vivid descriptions bring out both the darkness and the light of Maine life. I loved the image of Lyman “running the rip,” crossing the breakwater between Little Herring Ledge and Salvation Point.
