MY THOUGHTS

Jeneva Rose’s debut THE PERFECT MARRIAGE was a phenomenal thriller & 4.5 stars from me, but her latest fell a little bit flat for me.

I think her writing is fantastic. It’s quick and to the point. Her books are on the shorter side but she doesn’t pack a lot of fluff in there, which is really refreshing for a thriller. I liked the modern spin using a secluded Airbnb property as the setting for the story. The use of airbnb added a more realistic air to the plot as well which IMO is an important aspect to a thriller. I also loved the dual POV. By the end I really appreciated having the different perspectives throughout the book.

I think where this one went wrong for me was the instalove trope being mixed into the suspense. It felt a little out of place and disjointed and took away from the story for me rather than add to it. I also wasn’t blown away by the premise of the plot in general, it felt a little too simple and there wasn’t a whole lot of layers or complexity to it. And for this reason the plot twist & ending in general were rather predictable & anticlimactic for me.

Okay, so about 1/3 of the way through this book, I had to stop and double check the summary and genre…. Why am I reading a romance novel? When does this become a thriller….? The shift in this book from romance to “thriller” was not subtle and occurred so quickly that it didn’t feel believable. I rolled my eyes way too many times (because it’s a secret romance novel!) and the “twists” all felt predictable. What the hell was that?? Would not recommend.

Thank you NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the pacing of her books - it is always spot on!

This started as a romantic suspense and then got crazy by the end! Definitely was NOT what i was expecting which is always very fun in a thriller 🔪

I think what kept me from loving this one was the characters—I found it odd that someone (especially a woman) would go to a remote cabin in Wyoming and rent an Airbnb where she didn’t have the entire house to herself and stayed with the man who owned it🤯🤔. I also found it unbelievable that these characters could have these feelings in 5-6 days.

This almost matched my favorite book by Jeneva Rose Perfect Marriage. This is a thriller with a spicy romance. Book is told from his and her point of view. Setting is a ranch where everyone dies the question is: Is it just cursed or is there a murderer in the sight? Author once again gives couple of unexpected twists. – "Some People kill because they enjoy it and that is just it".

This book is creepy as hell!!! You got one POV if a creepy, charming Airbnb guy named Calvin who does this on the side because he says money is tight from the farm. Another POV is a girl named Grace who picks vacation spots by a spot on the map. She picks Wyoming where she ends up at the ranch where Calvin is. You have no idea who is telling the truth and what is really happening.

An amazing book!! Suspenseful and downright just creepy!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

There are many elements of this novel that I vibed with, but other parts felt like it was a rushed attempt at a nine-dimensional plot. The plot twist was very predictable, even from chapter two. If I want to read suspense, then I want to be surprised when the plot lays itself down. I rolled my eyes when the dual POV revealed the true villain of the novel.

Another fantastic turn by Jeneva Rose!

Calvin is that dark mysterious hunk we think we want in our lives but he's a tad stalkerish... Grave begins as a little bit unlikable but then my feelings towards her changed. I just couldn't put it down..

Thanks to Blackstone Publishing, the author, and NetGalley for the free gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

My initial thoughts when i started this one was like is this a romance?? possibly a romantic suspense - which I really have never read.

This book was so freaking twisted and had me holding my breath almost the whole book - all of the characters can’t be trusted and there was so much weird shit going on.

I can’t give too much without giving away spoilers, but if you like thrillers that have you a little nervous and freaked out then this is for you. I personally might have been a little too creeped out for this one.

The ending of this one had me shooketh.

The same author as a The Perfect Marriage which is another super popular thriller.

Grace Evans shot a dart at a map and landed on Wyoming, that's how she picks all her vacations. When she drives up to her Airbnb, who knew that the host would be a sexy cowboy, but looks aren't what they seem. Along with relaxing, she gets to know Calvin, his family and friends and something just isn't sitting well with her.

Calvin Wells starts falling for Grace Evans at first sight. He's slowly trying to convince her to stay with him forever, but she runs so hot and cold he can't tell what she's going to do next.

Rose tells this from both POVs and even though I guessed what was going to happen, she definitely sprinkled in quite a few surprised I would have never seen coming. This was a great, quick read and the ending was a shock. I rated this 3 stars, thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

Grace Evans is a city girl through and through. A high stress job that leaves no time or space to breathe has her longing for a vacation where she can leave it all behind. She finds that in an Airbnb booking for a remote Wyoming ranch with an attractive owner, Calvin. As Grace settles in she's not sure if she prefers the breathtaking view of the mountains, or of Calvin's body more. Sparks fly between the two, and although Grace has her misgivings about the lack of cell service and WIFI, she finds herself falling for the damaged and mysterious man.

With her looming departure, Grace begins to suspect that Calvin's infatuation may run deeper than her own, and as she hears stories of a missing woman, eyes up the padlock on his basement, and learns about tragedy after tragedy that seem to have befallen him, she begins to wonder if will actually *let* her leave. A high octane thriller that might just have readers checking into a hotel on their next trip, "You Shouldn't Have Come Here" is sure to be one of the summer's hottest reads.

As a self-professed thriller connoisseur, I thought that I knew where the ending of this novel was heading. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when we got to the last chapter. I was so shocked and literally never imagined that it would take this direction. It's rare that an author can surprise me so completely, and I was impressed with Jeneva Rose's chops. I did find parts of the beginning portion to feel repetitive, and thought initially that the story was a bit cliched, but by the end I saw all the thread Rose wove through the plot to try and clue me into where things were headed and I appreciated these breadcrumbs much more thoroughly.

Recommended for fans of Greer Hendricks and Alex Finlay, "You Shouldn't Have Come Here" will keep readers on the very edge of their seat to the last sentence. I need to start by saying I love Jeneva. I have read/listened to all her previous work and have loved it... recommend her all the time.

I just couldn't with this one... it was more romance than a thriller. So much randomness thrown in, it felt like she took every idea she ever wrote on a sticky note and threw it into this book.

That being said, I really enjoyed my buddy read with two girlfriends while reading this, we had tons of theories and caught a few things, but not the final twist. I will still read everything she writes as I love her. ....

So Jeneva if you see this, please don't block me. LOL. I'm not a Scott I promise, this one just wasn't for me.

Can't wait to go back & read her other titles!

Would give 4.5 stars if i could.....but deserves better than a 4 star rating!!!

Publisher Description
The new thriller from the USA Today and #1 Amazon Bestselling Author of The Perfect Marriage and One of Us Is Dead!

You’ve opened up your house and your heart to a total stranger… What could possibly go wrong?

Grace Evans, an overworked New Yorker looking for a total escape from her busy life, books an Airbnb on a ranch in the middle of Wyoming. When she arrives at the idyllic getaway, she’s pleased to find that the owner is a handsome man by the name of Calvin Wells—and he’s eager to introduce her to his easygoing way of life. But there are things Grace discovers that she’s not too pleased about: A lack of cell phone service. A missing woman. And a feeling that something isn’t right with the ranch.

Despite her uneasiness, the two bond and start to fall for one another. However, as her departure date nears, things change for the worse. What began as a playful romance soon turns into a complicated web of lies. Grace grows wary of Calvin as his infatuation for her seems to have morphed to obsession. Calvin fears that Grace is hiding something from him—including her reason for staying at his ranch to begin with. Vacation flings typically end in heartbreak, but for Grace and Calvin, it’ll be far more destructive.

⭐⭐⭐.5/5

• romantic suspense
• alternating POV
• a little cringe

People have ~strong~ opinions on this book. Do you have to suspend a lot of common sense while reading? Yes. I couldn't decide if it was a romantic suspense or suspenseful romance... 🤔 Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable read although there were So. Many. Signs. for our FMC to run for the hills. I thought the ending was fun but can see how many didn't like it.

This was amazing and different and I loved it.

This is my book club pick for my YouTube channel (Reading With Jess). I will be having another booktuber (Season's Readings) on my channel on 5/25/23 at 8pm EST to go in detail of this book.

I loved how original and unsettling this books was. The entire time I'm reading this I'm thinking to myself "why is everyone in this story making me fell uncomfortable?" Literally had mini nightmares after reading this, thinking there was someone in my home or even outside my bedroom door.

I loved the dual POV and how we really couldn't trust Grace or Calvin. The setting was great for a "getaway" as a reader but also the ominous feeling of this small town and everyone in it.

Cannot wait for my book club discussion and I look forward to reading more by Jeneva Rose.

If "Scott" doesn't like this one, then he simply has no taste.

This was just not great. I was bored and the characters didn’t make sense at all.

I would have liked to hear graces story more.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! I was hoping that I would like You Shouldn’t Have Come Here more than I liked the last book I read by this author, and I did! I think the author’s writing has improved to a degree, and it was much easier to get through this book than it was to get through One Of Us Is Dead.

I like the idea of a double serial killer plot twist, but I think that it only makes sense at the very end and up until the last chapter you’re just confused about what you’re reading. Like immediately at the beginning I thought it was so unrealistic for Grace to be okay with staying with a strange man at a secluded cabin with no service and a broken car, because no woman would be okay with that. Then at the end it’s revealed why she’s not like other women and wasn’t trying harder to leave. It was just confusing until the last chapter.

This book seemed to be a weird romance for most of the book and then it switched to thriller. I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be a dramatic romance with family issues or a thriller.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. When Grace throws a dart on the map to pick her next Airbnb stay, this chance encounter starts to unravel in a slow burn that makes you second guess how unplanned this really is. Calvin and his ranch appear to be the solitude Wyoming offers this city girl, however, over the course of a week both are hiding something the other can't put their finger on. As the reader, I kept pointing fingers and ultimately was looking for more of a wow factor after all of the build up rather than the sizzle that ensued.

2.5 stars. This one was a little too much of a romance and too little in the suspense/thriller vibe for me. The ending though redeemed it a little.
