Mac and Oliver are partners in the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC. They are investigating the death of a wealthy attorney. After finding the strange cause of his death, and several related deaths, they begin digging further. It turns out that someone is arranging the deaths, in order to make a tidy profit.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were intriguing and the plot was unusual. My only beef was that the book sometimes got into a little more detail about the process than necessary. It's okay to just let us know that something happened without going into excruciating as to every step involved in its process. But that's a minor complaint. Overall, I found the book to be a great read.

A fairly easy read.
Detectives Mac Burke and Oliver Shaw have been working together a long time, and Mac still lives with his ex-wife Maggie - although he still doesn’t know what she does for a job!
A wealthy lawyer is found dead, and then they realise that there are others who have died in suspicious or open cases. They find evidence of who it could be, but with the help of a friend find nothing on the suspects. This being Washington/Virginia it’s not a long stretch for them to consider that they’re CIA. Mac and Oliver get help from a few informants - not sure whether this would really happen, and the chief doesn’t seem to be too bothered by how they got their information.
Their relationship seems a bit too good to be true, with the chief falling over himself to help them. Maggie meanwhile breaks rules to help her ‘husband’!
Think Mac has a drink problem…several drinks and driving, followed by a few when he gets home to Maggie - how does he actually work?
Although an easy read,, a bit frustrating at times.

Mac and Oliver are homicide detectives solving a lot of murders. The writing moves along at a good pace.
Storyline is good, but feels orchestrated with a lot of micro filler and unnecessary recaps.
No character development or backstory. No real emotion. I can't relate to the characters because I don't know them. I never felt connected to anyone. It feels very removed.

I would like this so much more if I could get to know the characters. Maybe in the next book.

No sex.
No graphic violence.
No swearing.
