The Intern by Michele Campbell is a fantastic thriller that I had a hard time putting down. When I had to do other things I was constantly thinking about the book and what was going to happen to the main characters. It is gripping from the start and it ramps up the further you read. Madison Rivera is a young law student at Harvard. She has always looked up to Judge Kathryn Conroy as she attended the same high school as Madison, attended Harvard Law, and had been so successful in her career. Madison wanted to be just like her and Judge Conroy has motivated her for years. Madison was in Judge Conroy's class at Harvard and had the Judge's respect for being a great student. Judge Conroy taught one class at Harvard this semester.
Judge Conroy tells Madison she's lost an intern and that she should apply for the spot. Madison is so excited and wants the position, but she's hiding a secret. Madison's brother, Danny, has been arrested on a serious drug charge that he says he's innocent of. Danny is now in prison. Judge Conroy was the judge who heard Danny's case and decided his fate. She didn't have a lot of choice as Danny plead guilty. When Madison and her Mom go to the prison to visit Danny he tells them that his lawyer was in on the set-up and so was Judge Conroy. Madison doesn't believe it and tells Danny that he knows the judge and that she wouldn't do that.
Madison keeps it concealed that she has a brother because it would look bad for her at Harvard now that he's in prison. Madison decides to apply for the intern position with Judge Conroy, but she won't divulge that she has a brother. She'll try to work behind the scenes to get more information about Danny's case. Madison gets the position and is thrilled to be working with the woman she so admires. Madison's mom calls soon after in a panic as she went to visit Danny at the prison and he wasn't there! No one could tell her where he was! How can that be possible? Where is Danny? Was Danny telling the truth? Was he set-up? Who was behind it and why?
As Madison gets closer to Judge Conroy she realizes that there's more to her than meets the eye. She seems afraid, but why and of who? When Madison agrees to pet sit for the judge things become clear as to why Judge Conroy is afraid. Someone starts banging on the door in the middle of the night and sets off the house alarm. Madison can see him through the cameras and calls the judge for advice on what to do? Why did Judge Conroy lure Madison here, get her to agree to petsit her cat, and then leave quickly 10 minutes later? Why was she in such a hurry and where was she going? Madison is terrified after being woken by the house alarm and doesn't really want to stay any longer.
Judge Conroy is hiding a lot from Madison. Is Judge Conroy setting Madison up? Is the Judge really on the take like her brother thinks? Can Madison trust Judge Conroy to help her if she shares about Danny? Madison's mother is so distraught that she's having panic attacks and chest pains. Will she be okay? Will they find Danny before it's too late? Why was Judge Conroy's husband murdered? Who would do that? Why haven't they solved the case? The same people that investigated his murder are the same people who arrested Danny. Is it a coincidence? Will Judge Conroy tell Madison what's really going on?
The Intern is a fantastic book that I rate 5 stars with my highest recommendation. I couldn't read the book fast enough towards the end. The Intern comes out on October 3. I'd like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of The Intern in exchange for a fair review. #TheIntern
