this was such a good gothic mystery, it had what I enjoyed from other books like this. Kate Collins does a great job in telling the story and creating great characters. I enjoyed the spooky atmosphere of the book and loved the theme of motherhood. I can't wait to read more from Kate Collins.

"The door to Clover’s room slammed shut. Something heavy landed on the stairs and disappeared. Lydia fell sideways and skinned the heel of her hand on the bare boards. Beads of blood welled in the graze and saltwater from the swimsuit stung the wound. She crouched on her hands and knees and stared at the landing. Sweat prickled her palms."

What an interesting haunted house book, it was slow paced but didn’t drag. I felt fully taken in by these two women. Poor Orla not feeling good enough for her horrible husband! So much sadness and grief but it didn’t feel maudlin. Can’t wait to read more from the author!

This was creepy, haunting, and unsettling, making it a great read for at night. The dual P.O.V's and timelines added so much to the atmosphere with the past P.O.V. really making the story. However, I was left feeling unsatisfied with no real explanation or conclusion. This is one where if you like books that are left to the imagination, it's perfect for you. Unfortunately it wasn't for me. Three Stars.

Thank you to Netgalley and Mariner Books for this ARC.

I wasn't expecting this at all. This book made me feel the way "The Yellow Wallpaper" made me feel the first time I read it in college. It made me feel how I felt the last time I read "Rebecca."
This is a fantastic story about how motherhood and old houses make me feel.
Every sentence is carefully constructed.
This is a perfect story of the ways isolation can drive us mad.

I will be recommending this book to everyone that I meet for the next five years, at least.
This is the gothic novel of our generation.
Amazing.
