In Sister Roar, Kay and Lisa Robertson have teamed up to help women reclaim their voice and to embrace sisterhood and to support one another. Like a lion we are created to roar. They begin the book by sharing the story of Phil Robertson and how he founded Duck Commander. He made the legendary duck call. This turned into them obtaining their own TV show on A&E Network entitled, Duck Dynasty. It became the number on reality show for 5 years. This show features all of their family members and offered watchers with a family friendly show. Kay is the wife of Phil Robertson and has a couple of cookbooks. Lisa is the wife of Alan and he’s the oldest and he’s known as the beardless brother.

In the book, Lisa opened up about her past and how our past doesn’t determine our future. Her and Kay have a special place in their hearts about unplanned pregnancies. Both of them became pregnant when they were in their teens. Both of them were unmarried. Lisa chose to have an abortion. The doctor described it as a tissue that was inside her and she reassure her that she could recover from this and move on with her life. She shared how she had to learn with her shame and guilt everyday of her life. She explained how Jesus forgave her and helped to redeem her. This is why they are so big on reaching out to unwed mothers and teach them about the love of Christ. She also wants to help people who had an abortion to forgive themselves and to receive grace. In the book, she also discussed her past with having an affair that did become sexual and how this affected her marriage.

Another big part of the book was the story from Phil’s past. This part of the book is written by a special guest, Phyllis. Readers are probably wondering who this new person in the Robertson is. It started with a DNA test her oldest son did to learn more about his family. It was revealed that Phyllis and her sister didn’t share the same dad. Her mother didn’t confess until pressured and it turned out Phil was her dad. She admitted to not knowing much about the family since she was living in Nicaragua. In the book, we hear from Kay and Lisa’s side of the story and how she met Phil and the family in 2020.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is ready to join the sisterhood and they want to learn to soar together. The messages in this book will encourage readers to learn to lean on others and embracing others. The stories from both ladies really brought the book to life and it was inspiring to read about their life and their personal struggles. This book enclosed your turn section and it included questions and a prayer at the end of each chapter.

I have never watched Duck Dynasty, but I did hear about it. When I started reading the book, it took me a little while to connect the authors to the family. I did enjoy reading the personal testimonies and appreciated the openness of the ladies who wrote this book. And while I found a lot of gems about sisterhood and the beautiful relationship between mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law, I am not sure I like the idea of "the roar". Somehow it seems to go against the beauty of feminine expression that I feel God calls us women to. Not that we should be timid or weak, but for me personally the lion's roar is not a metaphor I found appealing. But all the suggestions for building sisterhood were very useful and I appreciated them.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with the book. It did make me rethink some ideas and I found it useful.

Let me start by saying that Sister Roar is not the type of book I would typically reach for, but I enjoy branching out now and then, and this is one of those hidden gems you can discover when you step outside your comfort zone. While this book is primarily geared toward Christian women seeking to find their voice, build friendships, and strengthen their faith, it holds value for anyone looking to cultivate a sense of community, whether by joining or building one.

At its core, Sister Roar is a powerful tool for personal growth, guiding you to find yourself, discover your voice, and achieve peace through faith, all while connecting with like-minded individuals. It’s a compelling reminder that, as women, we should support and uplift one another, working together to build solid and meaningful relationships. The message is one of encouragement, empowerment, and finding inner peace through faith in God, but it also offers insights that anyone, regardless of faith, can appreciate.

Ultimately, this book inspires readers to embrace sisterhood and live authentically in the company of others. If you’re searching for a deeper connection with yourself and those around you, this could be the book you’ve been looking for.

Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson Books | Thomas Nelson for gifting me the e-book ARC of Sister Roar in exchange for my honest review.

Sister Roar by Kay Robertson and Lisa N. Robertson, is like sitting and having a conversation with Ms Kay and Lisa.
The content is very encouraging for all women who want to live an honest and meaningful life. There is kindly advice, fun conversations, and past experiences by both women. The book is written as each woman speaks her truth from life experiences as a Christian woman. They motivate women to live, speak, and seek truth from biblical scripture. The message of this book is to Speak your voice, Expect to be heard, and Live in honesty.
Thank you to NetGalley, the authors, and publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
