This thriller reminded me alot of lovely bones. With that being said, it was enjoyable. I would listen to it at night with my sleep mask on and find myself not wanting to go to sleep just to hear more. Layla is murdered and she comes to Gale, her brother to help him solve her killing. I want to listen to more book from this other.

Nobody believed that Gale was actually seeing his murdered sister, so Gale did not believe it either...until she started speaking to him and was able to direct him to a lost toy. The two of them start to work to uncover who killed her and prove it, which turns out to be a lot harder than either of them anticipated because of who he is and how Gale knows. Their investigation also catches the killer's interest and he soon picks Gale to be his next victim. This is a chilling and emotional thriller that leans into a prevalent fear of abuse of power.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this audio ARC. This book really took me by surprised. I was not expecting this story to suck me in like it did. I found myself thinking about the book when I wasn't listening, which is always a good sign that it is a good book for me.

I do not give out 5 ⭐️ reviews easily, so this is a huge compliment from me.

I was skeptical because of the paranormal element, but this one was fantastic! Great story that kept me engaged, and when the twist came, I couldn't stop listening. The narrator was fantastic, and the ending as perfect. Impressed with this book!

Trigger Warning
Kidnapped/SA'd/Murdered Child

I do enjoy a thriller but I think I need to stay away from the ones involving murdered and SA'd kids, especially when we get a POV of the killer. Beyond that this story was so well written! I guessed who the killer was but the clues were there so I don't feel super smart about it. Poor Layla. Poor Gale.

Layla is lured away and murdered then two years later her ghost decides to show herself to her younger brother and help him find the killer.

I highly recommend this if you enjoy a thriller mystery.

Little Ghosts by Gregg Dunnett
Narrated by Katie Villa

From the beginning we know that Layla is dead, her murder unsolved. The grief of her family is ever present even two years later and it will always be there in some way or another but right now it could tear the family apart. Jon, the father, rides his bike a LOT, angering Rachel, the mom, with his not being around, not being there more, forgetting appointments between the demands of his job and his need to burn off energy. Rachel can only turn her grief into a smothering control of their ten year old son, Gale.

Gale barely talks even two years after Layla's death. He has weekly therapy, his parents show him he is loved always. But Gale has a secret that keeps him in his room away from others. He knows no one will believe him so he tells no one.

The audiobook narration is so good. I can still hear Gale's voice and Layla's voice, too. Two smart kids that have had to grow up way too soon. But still kids whose creative minds and active imaginations just might make finding Layla's killer possible.

DI Kieran Clarke has been on this case for two years but it's being shunted farther down the priority list with the lack of movement on the case. A TV reenactment might just stir up memories and the parents want it to happen. There are results and from then on we "get" to spend time in the head of a horrible monster. I did have trouble knowing the bad things that happened to Layla and the bad things that could happen to Gale, the subject matter is very disturbing. But I think the story is very well told and now I have a new author to follow.

This one is a little difficult for me to review. I loved the first half of the book. I could not put it down! I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. But the last part of the book left me feeling very disappointed. I won’t give details so as not to spoil this for anyone who hasn’t read the book. But I will say it that it needs an overhaul on the police procedures. There is absolutely no way things would have happened they way they were written in this book. I realize that the story is a work of fiction, thank goodness. But even fictional books need to be believable. And the last part of this book was definitely not believable.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Loved this book. Had me hooked the entire time. Loved the characters and wondering what was going to happen next.
Gale trying to solve his sisters disappearance with the help of Layla whom only he sees.
The plot continues to twist and make you wonder who is telling the truth and who isn’t.
Narrator did a great job.

This book is a beautifully written, heartbreaking story with exciting twists and a wonderfully sad and satisfying conclusion. I am not typically drawn to police led thrillers however "Little Ghosts" is so much more than that. I absolutely loved this book and will continue to look for future works from Gregg Dunnett!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.

I listened to this one. This is probably my favorite book of 2023. There was nothing I didn't like about this book. The twist was revealed early on in the book, but that didn't take anything away from the story. I listened to it in 2 days, I would have liked to have finished it in one day, but you know, responsibilities get in the way. It's not based in the USA, there is a slight accent, but I could easily listen to it at 2x the speed and enjoy and understand well. The only oddity was that they kept calling the characters by first and last name, John Martin, Rachel Martin, they were the only characters with those names, so I found it odd. The narrator did a great job telling the story. This is a ghost story as implied by the title, however it's not over the top haunting scenes. I believe in an afterlife like this, so it didn't bother me at all. It helped pull the whole story together. Thanks NetGalley and Dreamscape media for the ARC. #LittleGhosts #NetGalley

Told from several different viewpoints, including the young murder victim, this story is a slow burn that goes from zero to 60 after an initial lull. Two years after the murder of young Layla, the police have no suspects, and the girl’s parents, Rachel and Jon are in agony. Layla’s brother, Gale, meanwhile insists he knows who the killer is because Layla’s ghost has told him. The subject matter is dark, but not graphic, and Gale and Layla’s voices are strong and authentic

I rarely give 5 stars to a book. I just don't.

I struggled initially with the audio for Little Ghosts, and wasn't sure this was my cup of tea. Then, I kept listening and suddenly I was engrossed in the story.

And I didn't see THAT coming. Can't tell you, lol.
And then I didn't see the next thing. Or the next.

And about 75% in I knew it was a solid 4. But, like I said, a 5 from me is like finding a unicorn.

I am writing this review minutes after finishing the book and I am sobbing. Sob-bing. This is a 5. I will not tell you anything about the specifics because the value of this one is going in blind, but do go in. Give it a listen. Enjoy the ride. Keep a box of tissues handy.

Well done Gregg Dunnett. I'm now stalking all your writing.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for allowing me the privilege of listen.
