This is a quick and accessible book that is written for the lay person who struggles with imposter anxiety. The author details the definition of imposter anxiety, also known as imposter syndrome, how it relates to low self-esteem, the various factors that contribute to it, and she offers evidenced-based treatments and tips to practice for managing this condition.

The author is a black immigrant woman, so she includes how various marginalized communities can be particularly susceptible to imposter anxiety, especially when they are in traditional (i.e., white male) settings. I appreciated her personal anecdotes and examples throughout the book. However, some of her suggestions were quite basic (e.g., make eye contact when speaking to show your confidence), but I do think that even these can be really helpful for a neurodivergent audience, for whom some of these ideas may not be obvious or straightforward.

The one thing that irked me at the end was that the author suggested using a "life coach" to help you overcome imposter society. As a psychologist, I am always leery of life coaches, as they typically do not have the same training, nor are they upheld to the same ethical standards (since they are not licensed), as licensed mental health professionals. In order for someone to work on imposter anxiety using the evidenced-based treatments (e.g., mindfulness, CBT) suggested by the author, I would highly recommend seeing a licensed therapist or psychologist.

Thank you to the author, NetGalley, and New Harbinger Publications for an arc of this book to review!

Thank you to NetGalley and New Harbinger Publications for the ARC of Overcoming Imposter Anxiety by Ijeoma C. Nwaogu. I find the topic of talents (and failures) to be fascinating. In this reflective and thoughtful nonfiction primer, Nwaogu provides examples of ways we sabotage our best thriving selves by allowing our insecurities to rule our decision making. I saw a lot of myself in this book.. I especially liked the ways coping thru this kind of anxiety was shared and discussed. I’m glad I read this one!

First, let me say that the author’s expert advice was solid and her voice spot on. I was able to put the tools in her book to use immediately at a dance class I felt I had no business attending and found I enjoyed myself instead of feeling weighed down by feelings that I didn’t belong with all the women who were much better dancers than I.

That being said, the book is in desperate need of some editing. As an editor and copywriter for an education publishing company, I spent more time highlighting and making suggestions on my Kindle than absorbing the information. The advice is solid. The author clearly has the expertise to deliver it and the writing voice to make it feel as if I’m sitting at lunch getting advice from a friend. However, the typos and grammatical errors will no doubt affect the credibility of the author.

A few suggestions: Nearly all the sentences that begin with “But” could be altered to “, but” to connect the two sentences together. A lot of sentences could be edited for better readability. I have dozens of notes in my Kindle I’d love to share to help this author get the readership she deserves!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley.

As a photographer / business owner, imposter syndrome is something that SO MANY of us face. It can be hard to explain to people who haven't experienced it themselves. But the thoughts of "am i good enough? is my work good enough?" haunt you.

This book did an amazing job at putting these thoughts into understandable words and phrases.

While I typically do not enjoy self-help style of books, I wanted to check this one out firsthand to see if I could perhaps find some tips or even just reassurement... And I did find both!

I may purchase a physical copy when it's released!

I enjoyed this book but felt like there were a few too many anecdotes and examples given over making more points, but overall this book had a good sentiment.
