There was a lot going on in this book. That isn't necessarily always a bad thing, but I personally felt like all the scenarios didn't mesh together well.

To start - we hear about women getting attacked by a man in the city and out main character, Meghan, is very nervous about this but consistently does things which would would make her an easier target.

Then we have a broken family. Again, no problem here but I felt pulled in all directions with how to feel about the ex-husband. Was he a decent guy or a not-present father? It seemed like both... but those two traits do NOT go hand in hand.

Next up - Meghan is treating a patient and she is super uncomfortable with this situation. Understandable considering the patient's family is super sketchy, but she inserts herself into the family's business anyway. We find out another connection later in the book, but that make's Meghan's actions even crazier to me.

We also have Meghan's old friend in an abusive relationship. This one is tough - I will admit - so her actions make sense here.

Finally - the work friend (Luke) who Meghan says is attractive, but she is not attracted to, but then she kind of feels like she might be at one point, but then that goes away entirely. Oh but also, he is married with a pregnant wife at home.

As you can see - lots of plot points which we hope would all tie together at some point... And some do! But others absolutely do not and a few of the minor points don't get resolved at all.

I really wanted to like this book, but it was just average for me. It seemed to drag on, I wasn't a particularly huge fan of Meghan, and I felt like she never would have gotten away with the crime in real life.....

I absolutely love Kubica’s writing. When I *briefly* read the synopsis, I was so so excited for a Kubica medical thriller!
This one revolves around Meghan, an ICU nurse. She stumbles upon frightening secrets about her patient, Caitlin, who jumped from a bridge. And of course, Caitlin’s family loves Meghan and wants Meghan to be her nurse when on duty.

Wow wow wow! This read was addictive, propulsive and twisted. I really loved Meghan’s character and although I was suspicious of the other characters, I loved learning their secrets. There were great twists throughout this book. I detected a minor one but not the big one! I love a good surprise! 4.5 ⭐️

I love a good psychological thriller and so I was so excited to read this one! The first chapter of the book immediately had me hooked and I needed to know how those events came to be. The premise of this one was so interesting. Meghan is an ICU nurse who becomes increasingly involved in her patient Caitlyn's life as she cares for her after Caitlyn jumped off a bridge and is in a coma as a result. While this is happening, Meghan is attempting to help an old high school friend Natalie, is navigating a divorce and parenting her teenage daughter Sienna, and has heard of a man who has been attacking women in their own homes, making her question her and her daughter's safety.

After an explosive first chapter, the book moves at a slower pace while setting the scene and all the various plot lines. That being said, I was still turning the pages throughout. The book is told entirely through Meghan's perspective which I thought was interesting because her thoughts are all over the place, adding to the tension of the book and building suspense. Meghan made some choices that made me confused, but, I overall liked that she wasn't a perfect character and has some flaws. The last quarter of the book really picks up the pace as the story starts to move towards a climax. This is the part of the book that had me most interested because I wanted to know how everything concluded. I feel like I guessed the twists (and a couple I had guessed early on), but I still liked the way they were revealed. Overall, this was a fun thriller and I would definitely recommend it for a quick read!

Thank you for this arc. It took me a while to get into it. I tried the audiobook which I think add it better. Good plot, interesting cast of characters overall good book!

I've been a fan of Mary Kubica's since her debut novel and while her first is still my favorite, this latest psychological thriller made me gasp not once, but twice! I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced story of deceit, mistaken identity and questionable motives. Definitely recommend!

I have been a fan of Mary’s books ever since her debut, The Good Girl. She crafts such addicting, binge-worthy thrillers and this latest one is no exception! In fact, this just might be my new favorite one, or at least in top three…but they are all so good that you cannot go wrong picking up any of her books!

This book grabbed me from the get-go and once I started reading it, I was all in! I loved the characters, I loved the hospital setting and I loved how I was questioning EVERTHING! And then when we get to the end of part one – I literally gasped! I don’t know how she does it, but I definitely did not see that coming and had to stop and think about all I had read up to that point before continuing on – and then plowing on to finish the book in one sitting!

This book is so complex and brilliantly plotted and I’m so afraid of giving anything away. The structure is one that isn’t done often and yet works so well here…I can’t see it being pulled off any other way. This is the type of book that when you finish reading, you absolutely want to start reading again because it’s just that good and clever! I had the e-galley of it and went out and purchased the print copy on pub day so I could flip through the pages to see how I missed things…it really is such a fantastic, edge-of-your seat read that had me unsettled and guessing all the way through!

This is one book to definitely add to your reading list if it isn’t already on your radar! As I said, it just might be my new favorite of her books and I’ve read them all!

From the beginning you are taken on the journey with Meghan. As a nurse and mother to her sassy lipped daughter (I mean seriously her daughter was so damn bratty), you get a feel of who she is. The side characters were also intriguing to me and I didn’t trust anyone. As time went on, I began to question if Meghan herself was a reliable narrator.

Although the comings and goings of Meghan seem mundane, the second half of this book really made sense how Mary Kubica tied everything together. The constant fear in the background with women being attacked really put the reader on edge. There were twists and turns, and at one point I questioned my own armchair detective skills trying to put the puzzle pieces together. I definitely did not want to put this one down until I had all the answers.

I enjoyed this book. The first five chapters were a little slow, but then it sped up. There were several twists that kept me intrigued. It was suspenseful and a story that kept me guessing until the very end.

This is a good one even though it does start out a bit slow and has the main character mulling things over and over, but hang in there! It picks up with secrets, tension, and surprising twists! Abusive and ex husbands, overworked nurses, serial rapist, suicide, old troubled high school friend, mother/daughter relationships, murder, deception . . .there’s a lot going on! Ending leaves a bit of a question mark.

This was a great ride, full of twists and turns. Meghan Michaels is an ICU nurse and single mother, having recently divorced the father of her teenage daughter. Meghan had to move into a small apartment, the most she could afford and it was right next door to the L in Chicago.
The noise added some levity at times in the book.

Her job as an ICU nurse became more stressful when the patient she was assigned was a young woman in a coma from a suicide attempt. Meghan get to know the patient's family during the long stretch in the hospital. There is also a man attacking women in Chicago so Meghan has some understandable paranoia on her travels back and forth from the hospital and as she tries to get her daughter to protect herself.

There really is a lot going on which kept me on the edge of my seat and reading!

I just could not get into this story. Granted, there were definitely twists and turns but just too much to keep up with at times. Not my favorite MK book.

I loved this thriller. Meghan is an ICU nurse taking care of a woman who jumped off of a bridge and is now in a coma. We experience the situation from Meghan’s POV. She has her set of theories and suspicions as well as worries about her daughter and coworkers. Then BAM. When the twist reveals begin, I thought it was a typo in my ARC. It was so subtle and unexpected: a fantastic twist that just kept twisting. It was a great ride.

I personally really enjoyed this book! I could see how some people could dislike it just because of the medical talk/the explanations the main character Meghan gives about ICU nursing. As a fellow ICU nurse though it didn't bother me. Would definitely recommend this book, especially to my coworkers that love mystery/thrillers!

This gripping thriller had me hooked from the first page. Mary Kubica masterfully weaves multiple mysteries, keeping you on edge and your heart racing. While the pacing is perfect and the twists are jaw-dropping, some loose ends with the characters left me wanting more. Still, the smart storyline and compelling characters make it a must-read. Join ICU nurse Meghan Michaels as she navigates a patient's suicide attempt, reconnects with an old friend, and faces a dangerous predator. With suspense at every turn, this book is sure to captivate you.

This story was crazy! Meghan is just trying to be a good mother, while navigating being a single parent who works full time. It explores the dynamics between co-parents, where one has the means to do so much more and be the "fun parent". At the same time, it explores what it is like to be a woman in this world. Especially when there is a serial attacker on the loose in the city, and women have been warned to stay on the alert. I read a lot of mysteries, so one of the twists towards the end I saw coming. But, there was a twist I was not expecting! All in all, Mary Kubica wrote an enjoyable story and I can't wait for her next one!

There are no adequate words to express how good this fast-paced thriller is! From the first page, the author had me hooked on the story of ICU nurse Meghan Michaels, her daughter Sienna and her comatose patient Caitlin. Meghan is a compassionate nurse, a divorced single parent and she is juggling so many balls in her life that it’s a wonder she is able to function. When she is assigned Caitlin as a patient, she is not prepared for the changes that will come into her life. This is a roller coaster ride of emotion, hoping for the best for Meghan but knowing that the worst is coming because of all of the clues that everything is not as it seems. The twists abound in this pulse-pounding thriller that was impossible to put down. Add to the mixture a serial rapist terrorizing the city and an ex-husband who still wants a relationship, and you have plenty of suspects, red herrings and clues. I really enjoyed the characterization and the way the author made me feel panic when Meghan was panicked and joyful when she was joyful. That was some really realistic characterization going on! The plot was woven together masterfully from the past to the present and gave me glimpses into what was really going on, but I didn’t guess the ending because it was so cleverly disguised. This book is an amazing read that needs to be on all of the bookshelves of thriller lovers everywhere!

The story opened up interesting and then it just moved into Meghan’s life as an ICU nurse. There is a patient who is brought in and assumed she jumped from a bridge and that becomes the story. Was confused about the opening chapter until we get about 150 pages in and you come back to that. It had a few non thriller going on that kept you on the edge wondering what was going to happen. Characters you thought were the bad peoples but second guessed yourself to come back aroind to them and say to yourself I knew that. It was a great book

I thought this was just okay. I felt it lacked suspense throughout the whole book until the twists. The twist was good but wish I was more into the book.

What a whirlwind, fast-paced, thriller, I could not put this one down. I think I read it in two sittings! The main character Meghan tries so hard to remain emotionally detached from her patients, which is a blessing and a curse of being an ICU nurse. However, with this patient, there is something pulling her deeper into the mystery of what happened.
You think you know what’s going to happen and you think you can predict how the story ends, but I think you’ll be incredibly surprised with this read.
