I haven't read any self care kind of books before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was surprised how much I really enjoyed this book and it has made me want to look into other self care books.

While I did find this devotional to be a little repetitive, it is a nice, little, cozy one that can be read quickly each morning or whenever you read devotions. I do wish it gave questions for thought or journal ideas. I enjoyed the added prayers after each devotion.

A lovely little devotional. Perfect for a young mom with small children and not much free time on her hands for really deep study but needing a little reprieve. Great reminders and tips for self care, along with Scripture. As women, we often forget or don't know that it's perfectly okay to take care of ourselves. This book would make a thoughtful gift. Illustrative accents were a nice touch as well.

This is a great devotion for women. It has practical tips and ideas and biblical advice about self care in an easy to read format. I love that the devotions are less than a five minute read. So it's a great on the go devotion. You have time for this devotional and you should make yourself take time for biblical self care. When you do this correctly you can be there for everyone else.

The practical advice that is given as well as the scripture references are really great. I would recommend this devotion to all my friends and family.

It's like having a wise and empathic older sister sitting with you in from of the fireplace telling you how to take care of yourself and not feeling guilty because you do.

The Self-Care Devotional by Carey Scott is structured with a title describing that devotional, then a scripture reference, followed by an encouragement from the scripture, and then most importantly a prayer. The topics included are vast yet all revolving around self-care. a self-care that is God-approved.

Time and time again we try and sacrifice ourselves to serve others and feel guilty if when we burnout. Jesus took time to pray, to rest, to self-care. How much more do we need that? But the kind of self-care that Carey Scott writes about is not conjured up by us. It reaches out to the one who said our Father cares for us.

On of my favorites out of the 180 devotions is entitled Why We Act Like Bullies. It references Prov 3:30-31.

"When we act like bullies, it’s often because we’ve hit our limit. Maybe we’ve been going ninety miles an hour and finally hit a brick wall. Maybe we’ve been running on fumes, trying to bring closure to a project. Maybe we have been carrying the lion’s share of responsibilities at home for too long.... Through His Spirit, you’ll be proactive in taking care of your spiritual needs to keep you strong and wise. And as you choose to be kind to yourself in the right ways, grace will reappear. Joy will be restored. And you will be kind and generous toward others.

Dear God, I know I’ve had some rough edges lately. Forgive me for being a bully to those around me. Would You show me how to arrange my life in ways that will bless me and bring You glory? Amen."

Yes there is sin in our lives but sometimes we are hungry, angry, lonely, and tired. We may not always need a kick in the pants and this book gives you an alternative. I would recommend this title especially to those who don't have a listening ear to their burn-out or a loving counsel.

This came into my life at the perfect time, right when I needed it most. I was struggling to find time for myself amongst all of the other things I needed to get done in the day. With this devotional, it gave me the opportunity to sit and study the Bible, as well as a reason to take a little time each day to do something for me. And it helped me realize that taking care of myself helps my family more than it hurts.

Thank you to NetGalley, Barbour Books, and Carey Scott for the advanced copy of The Self-Care Devotional in exchange for an honest review.

This is a lovely devotional that is perfect for those who struggle to make time for themselves and the Lord. It expertly integrates self-care/mental health with spirituality, utilizing language from both and emphasizing the compatibility. I enjoyed the format and the simplicity, as it was not too overwhelming but also deep and substantial enough to give me things to chew on and process. Highly recommend!

Upon receiving this book, I did want to give myself some time to be able to go through it, and really utilize it for its purpose. As a teacher, things can get really crazy. Even as a parent, things can get really crazy as well. I really enjoyed that I was able to take time for myself by using this book. I feel like in a world where everything is crazy making time for yourself. It should be a priority because if you are not 100%, then you cannot be 100% at your job or at home.

This book is full of short and sweet devotions to truly meet the busy women where she’s at. It’s an ideal introduction to self care for those not very familiar with the practice. This is a devotional, not a self care guide, trauma healing manual, or a replacement for therapy. The design is consistent and aesthetically pleasing. I do wish that there were maybe a few lines to encourage reflective writing. I plan on purchasing a copy for my mother. I can see how she (and busy Christian women like her who have a history of rejecting self-care while serving others -especially those in minority communities) can benefit from seeing the integration of scripture into self care practice. Thank you Barbour Publishing for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

"How can you honor the Lord by caring for yourself...?"

A woman has many daily responsibilities. Perhaps she's a busy daughter, wife, mother and friend. She may have a career and most probably an active life with church and community. It can all be too much. Author Carey Scott guides the reader with brief and meaningful devotionals with Scripture from various translations of the Holy Bible to look to the importance of self-care. How can you serve God and care for your family if you don't take care of yourself? This book of 180 quick devotions and prayer prompts reminds women to care for their personal, emotional and spiritual health. God wants you to. It's nice for a start or end of your day. If one has time, a reader could keep an accompanying notebook to write in reactions to the advice in the daily readings.
I want to thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for my advanced reader's copy. This is my own personal opinion. I had an e-copy and think a paperback would be better.
My advice is to have a personal Bible translation close by in case some of the Scripture isn't what the reader is used to.

A delightful book to spend a little quiet time with each day. Slightly spoilt by not being formatted correctly for my tablet, so to fully enjoy I will need to buy the real book.
