Bobby Mason is the spare, the second son who's never trusted with any part of the family's responsibility, and he's tired of seeing peers waste that potential and squander their privileges. James Demeroven, was never supposed to inherit the Viscountcy, but now he finds himself frozen with uncertainty that's fueled in large part by the emotional abuse of his stepfather. They're opposites that find themselves pulled together despite their best efforts, constantly fighting the urge to either slap or kiss, even though they're not sure which themselves.
Why did it take me so long to read this? I have zero excuses, and I'm mad at myself for missing out on this sweet story for so long. I loved Bobby and James and everyone around them. It really is a super sweet story that touches on many very difficult topics and tough decisions people of the era were forced to make, while also showing that there will always be people who understand and are willing to help.
It's so nice to see fiction reflect that there were allies and people willing to support LGBTQ people back in the olden days, when two men kissing could end in tragedy and destitution for them and their families. And everyone around them does just that in both sweet and fun ways that help lighten up the more dramatic parts of the story.
And yes, the romance and banter are also perfect. So you get to enjoy Bobby and James figure out who they are together and apart, with some delicious character growth to go along with everything else.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the sweet romantic read!
