A simple and informative introduction to one of North India’s most vibrant festivals. The book does a nice job of covering the basics of Lohri celebrations—right from the ritual of the bonfire to the joy of community gatherings and traditions.
Young readers will particularly enjoy learning about the festive elements, especially the happily circulating sweet treats like rewri, gajak, Jaggery chikki and popcorn, which add warmth and flavor to the celebration. The book keeps things light and culturally rooted.
However, one noticeable drawback is the linguistic inconsistency where the pronunciation influenced the spelling—Punjab is written as Panjab, which may feel slightly off to some readers. While minor, it does stand out in an otherwise neatly presented book. It can be understandable because author is an American-Sikh, so her accent must have affected her spellings.
Overall, it’s a good introductory read for children or anyone looking to understand Lohri in a quick engaging way while being equally informative, festive and easy to follow.
