An ideal book for all school libraries – not just those in the titular 50 States. This gives us a double-page spread for all fifty, with a rough guide to where a select few things are; peppering the maps are tiny box-outs for six famous people per state, and more or less as much trivia as can be fit in, while beyond that we get proper text boxes for a timeline, a discussion of the state, and a databank of major cities, year of inclusion in the list of 50, name meaning, time zone, etc etc.

Some of this is certainly on the trivial-seeming side, but if people felt the need to declare a state neckwear for Arizona then clearly it wasn't exactly trivial to them. And this is certainly not the only gazetteer to focus on the bonkers superlative, such as Idaho having the world's biggest potato chip. But as I say, beyond the rest of the world needing to know this information about all these states, when we see the world's first parking meter, or typewriter, we know we have something of international interest, and that this isn't as jingoistic and inward-looking as you might think. Heck, it's already told you a few things you shouldn't smuggle from New York State to Canada.

I might query the need for this to be in paperback, but it has had a slight update and rejig for that format, apparently, and the 2015 original printing was definitely getting on a bit. That figure is, ultimately, a pretty damn decent review in its own right, mind – the fact this is still in print (and the daddy-o of several similar books) is proof of its many merits. I don't think it would inspire a road trip, or a visit to the great outdoors, as it says it intends, however – it would keep a young me rapt and firmly indoors for all its detail. Four and a half stars.

This book has a double spread lay out for each state with the main cities identified on the map. There is key information, famous people, and moments to remember highlighted for each state. There is a lot of information on each spread, but it is very engaging and organized rather than being overwhelming.

This book was a super cute read with all kinds of information for each of the states. From interesting locations to notable people, this book packs a lot of information into beautiful artwork that will keep your kids engaged. I could see this being a wonderful resource for classrooms or school libraries for younger elementary students and teachers to use when learning about different places around the US. I would love to have a physical copy to use with my own kids when we are traveling. Each state page also includes key facts like the state tree and state capitol location, along with a timeline to trace the history of the state with significant events.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The 50 States is packed with information on US states, arranged in alphabetical order. I love how it included important dates, wildlife, monuments, and extraordinary people who have called these states home. The book doesn't shy away from the tumultuous history of the USA, like the civil rights movement, but glosses over slavery, queer history, the occupation of Hawaii, and the genocide of the indigenous peoples. Even though this is a children's book, not all children reading it will have the luxury of now knowing about this history and there is a way to acknowledge these topics in an age-appropriate way.

I loved the historical facts, state information, and the spotlights on famous and influential people who came from each particular state. The "Moments to Remember" included on each page feature historical events and the dates they occurred. I enjoyed learning different things about each state, but especially my own state of Michigan. This a great tool for educating everyone about the United States.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

I loved this book! Not only was it easy to read with my little one but I too enjoyed it. It's the perfect book to cover all 50 states. We loved all the details and facts about each state. I liked that it is in alphabetical order so it was easy to cover all states. There are so many facts that are covered however they are short so it's not overwhelming for children and also people like myself who deal with ADHD.

"The 50 States" by Gabrielle Balkan is a visually stunning book full of infographic maps of the United States.

I appreciated the inside cover page that explains how to explore the book. Packed full of facts about famous people, state icons, largest cities, places of interest, and more, this book would make the perfect classroom companion for public schools, private schools, and homeschools alike.

I can't get over the graphic design of this book. It's absolutely brilliant! The illustrations are colorful; the fonts are fun, yet readable; and the infographics are well laid-out. Children of all ages will be drawn to this book, and parents and teachers will love reading it to them!

I'm not super up on what's going on with fact-filled browsable books like this, but this is a fun and engaging one. I can imagine the right kid getting obsessed with devouring all the fun facts, and more casual readers spending plenty of time on their own (and neighboring) states.

5/5 Stars!!!

I LOVE this book! The illustrations are whimsical and eye catching. Each state really gives a good representation of what makes it well known, influential people, and fun facts as well as giving you the typical stats you would find in a geography book. I am from the state of Oregon and can say for certain that all information is true from our state flower, the Oregon grape, to Voodoo Doughnuts! I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of research completed to make this book as comprehensive as it is.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for specific state history or just wants to learn about the 50 states.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I love maps, and I've traveled to most of the states in the United States, so this was a fun book for me to pick up. This is a fantastic children's book that incorporates fun facts, people of interest, and various cultural and historic landmarks in a gorgeous layout. The choices of the people and landmarks included were varied (scientists, authors, athletes, actors, etc) and the facts included for each state were very interesting. As a child, I would have loved this book. I had my own "state fact book" where I would add what the state's nickname or state's flower was. This would have been great for me to have on road trips. The one thing I wish it had were the state flags simply because I'm fascinated by flags.

Here's my breakdown:
Structure/formatting 4/5
Thoroughness of research 3/5
Storytelling 4/5
Enjoyment 4/5
Prior Knowledge Needed 5/5

I recommend this book to any child who loves to travel or loves to learn history. There are a lot of fun facts to learn and explore in this book that will keep children entertained for long road trips and multiple visits to each of the states.

Looking for a road trip distraction? This book is visually appealing and full of whimsy. But if you're looking for more, this isn't the book you're looking for.

In the search for facts about the 50 states that are new or lesser-known, the author seems to have reached too far. After finding a page with a feature in our own neighborhood which I wasn't familiar with, I reached out to everyone I could think of: no one else in my circle had heard of this "fact" either. Looking through other states I felt some familiarity with, I found this pattern repeating: while these facts are not untrue, they are sometimes obscure to the point of uselessness.

But this would be refreshing rather than frustrating if not for the author's failure to support them with any useful information. That natural feature I barely recognized from my own neighborhood? The book's design doesn't allow for more information about why else someone might be interested in visiting or knowing more about it.

The problem may be in the unconscious expectations I brought along. This book needed a more whimsical title representative of its contents.
