Thank you NetGalley, HarperCollins Canada, and Kristy Jackson for the early access copy of Mortified.

Mortified follows the story of a middle schooler named Belinda, who is naturally on the shyer side and easily embarrassed. Belinda befriends a girl named Sally, who believes she is a witch and is unbothered by the social expectations of a middle school. When Sally has a spell to help Belinda build her confidence, what could go wrong? A lot.

Mortified is a coming-of-age story of friendship, personal growth, tough situations, middle year social situations, and embraces indigenous culture by interlacing it throughout the story including Cree text. The illustrated comics created by Rhael McGregor that are introduced at the beginning of each chapter is a creative and engaging experience for the reader. The graphic novel component to Mortified is a brilliant idea, and a useful tool to help bridge the gap for children who enjoy graphic novels and are transitioning to more prose-based reading. Additionally, it was refreshing to read a story that introduced Canadian slang, more specifically Saskatchewan, in an easily digestible way.
