Ruby Vaughn is still mad at her octogenarian employer and housemate, Mr. Owen, for getting her mixed up in the occult. The latest scheme sees them in the Scottish Borders for a séance that ends in chaos and one of the three mediums dead. After she and Mr. Owen quickly become the prime suspects, Ruby will have to team up with folk healer Pellar, Ruan Kivell, to unravel the mysteries of Manhurst Castle and Mr. Owen's past.

There are so many secrets and twists in this story that it kept me guessing all the way to the end. I did guess right about one thing, but it didn't diminish how great the overall mystery is. Ruby is an interesting character who forges her own path, even when she knows it might be dangerous or lead to unpleasant revelations. Ruan is too much of a mystery for my tastes, but he's nice and always there to support Ruby when she jumps into danger.
I enjoy how Armstrong drops little hints about what happened before and what could be coming next without it feeling like dropped threads or forgotten points. It makes me look forward to what could be in the future for Ruby.
