Ezra grew up in his family's funeral home, which made seeing ghosts, particularly that of his disapproving grandfather, even worse. Escaping as far away from the funeral business and becoming a doula was no surprise, but finding himself back home and elbow deep in the intricacies of the family business after his mom runs away with her girlfriend certainly is. As is the fact that his new crush's deceased husband's ghost is now haunting him in ways that break every rule Ezra ever thought ghosts had to follow.

This is more a story about family, commitment, and communication than ghosts or even romance. The focus is on Ezra reconnecting with the family he broke away from after his mom's surprise announcement that she's in love with a woman and leaving the family business. We get to follow along as Ezra and his siblings deal with discovering that pretending that everything is fine and ignoring the smaller issues can lead to bigger problems. Yes, there are ghosts and the slow-burning romance between Ezra and Ben is wonderfully supportive and sweet, but what kept me turning pages was Ezra and his family slowly mending things, and how that also helped Ezra realize that he's not only not alone, he can ask for help without the world coming to an end.

My one complaint is that the title and description make it feel like the ghosts were going to play a significantly larger role than they actually do. They are there, with one that plays an important part in Ezra's love story, but I finished the book feeling like everything that takes place could reasonably happen without the ghosts even being a part of the story. It's not a deal breaker, but I would have liked for there to be more ghostly activity.

Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Dell for the emotionally satisfying read!
