Dina Whitlock is a kitchen witch who owns a successful café in London. She's given up on love after a hex placed on her leads to anyone she's interested in getting hurt. But she's got the best of friends, and she's ready to celebrate one of them getting married. Scott Mason is still reeling from a bad breakup and slowly getting back to a life he abandoned after his heart was broken, part of which is being best man at his best friend’s wedding. When fate keeps pushing Dina and Scott together and a romantic weekend celebrating love stirs up feelings in both of them, will Dina have the strength to finally face her hex?
I devoured this book. I can't think of a single thing I would change, other than me wishing we got more time to enjoy the characters. Dina is intriguing, a mix of self-assured and anxious mess that feels relatable. Scott is adorable and a little too good to be true, but just enough to make the fantasy of the romance even more magical. I loved the fact that they both have pretty full lives outside of being single, and that finding each other is just icing on the cake of their individual success.
Another thing I enjoyed is that a lot of the focus, even amongst the romance and Dina and Scott getting together, is that a lot of the plot centers on Dina and her mom. The hex of the title is a big driver for much of what takes place, and Dina's mom is a witch who can help her figure it out. But Dina's fears and apprehension keep her from seeking help because she's afraid of losing the loving, supportive relationship that she has with both her parents. It's a fear that keeps children of all ages quiet instead of asking for support, so I loved reading a story that supports the fact that loving parents love, understand, and support their children.
There's also a lot of fun, witchy moments to balance out the heavier topics that make it clear that female friendship is unwavering loyalty, support, and a source of strength.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Dell for the magical romance read!
