I am sorry but this book wasn’t for me. I couldn’t get into the storyline, and had trouble to keep going.

This is a very different story than I usually read, but the cover and description intrigued me. If you like dark humour this may be for you. You are left in no doubt that the main character is an unhappy soul. Very sure that she deserves more than her life has served up so far. Then as we get to the Celebrity that she is smitten with, I decided that ‘celebrity’ had addled both their brains. The whole is pretty unbelievable in reality, but this is fiction, and the author tells you at the beginning that that is the point. That is, enjoy the book, but it is written from a darkly comic perspective. The problem I have is that I can actually see this actually being a true life crime. What a world we live in. Have a read and see if you agree. Thank you to Grayson Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

Oh dear ! I am not sure what I just read, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. It was not good, in fact it was pretty dire. Not a book to look forward to reading.

🥇 Tied with Ugly Love for worst book I’ve ever read! 🥇

The book’s synopsis includes the following: “When I met her, my blood boiled. She was gorgeous, clever, rich and charismatic. She was everything I had never been and always wanted to be.” Bro. The main character, Jennifer, didn’t even “meet her” until 60%. Before that, a chaotic, disorganized mess. I thought I was reading someone’s unedited diary. Maybe that was the point? After that, the book just got gross. I mean, Jennifer steals this woman’s underwear and smells it. Girl.

A snippet: “My burn doesn’t hinder me at all; it’s just a simple aesthetic handicap. I can walk, run, jump, and most importantly, take calls.” You just read it—Jennifer tells the reader her burn is a simple aesthetic handicap. Tell me WHY Jennifer THEN tells the reader on every other page that she has a disability?????????

Disability (noun): a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person's ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical daily activities and interactions.

Therefore, I do not need to hear about your burn on every other page. You literally JUST told me you were fine. Also, gain some confidence and wear the sheer tights. Nobody’s going to look at your legs.

Edit, edit, edit. The main character’s employer toggles back and forth between Baxter Insurance and Baxter Assurance. It’s not that hard to Ctrl+F, babe.

NetGalley, you bamboozled me, dawg.

A dark and creepy book! It was twisted and I couldn't put it down. I think I need to read a rom-com after this one!

1.5 rounded up ⭐

Read if you like:
Characters with a disability
Multi personality disorder
Stalker tropes

Ty to NetGalley and publishers for the ARC copy.

This was a quick read. I had several what did I just read moments. This follows Jennifer Martinez, a woman who gets fired from jobs, little to no romantic life and still lives with her mother in her mid thirties.

Jennifer liked to remind us of it every other page of her disability.

Also, whenever she has conversations with someone, you have to really pay attention to who's speaking, otherwise you can easily lose track if it's a long conversation.

She had personality issues ✨ it added zest until a bit later in the story. The ending was great, somewhat saving it, but Jennifer definitely seemed... Well, average, trying to live outside her means no matter what it takes to achieve that without thinking things through.

If you meet someone like Jennifer, you should probably run. She was unhinged and I'm here for it, sis.

Overall, I wish I enjoyed it more but it was still interesting.

This book is written to shock and it doesn’t, well not for the reasons it wants to. The preamble talks about split personalities as a life choice which is both outdated, stigmatic and unwise but, it gives you a good idea of the level of the following prose.
I do enjoy a novel about obsession but this book didn’t really give me anything but the headlines, some graphic description and an ending that fell flat. It felt like a teenagers attempt to be different.

Thank you to NetGalley and Grayson Publishing for providing this book, with my honest review below.

The Obsessive was definitely disturbing, but ultimately not to my tastes. A story about obsession, the writing was graphic and took it too far for me at certain points. This may be for others as it is well written and very vivid, and should you find yourself the target of someone who is similar to the main character, Jennifer, I have one word for you - run.

I really wanted to love this book. I don’t know if it was because the character was so unlikable or if it just wasn’t my style of mystery/thriller, but I struggled with finishing it. The writing style was great but I definitely wasn’t a fan of the ending. I would’ve like to see more closure. If there’s going to be a series then that would make the ending better for me and I would want to read it. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in advance!
